Impressive by Martinez, he did a job on Edwards. Eddie should have put up the money for Edwards to fight Mthalane

No way Eddie wants to have Edwards fight Martinez again. He loses regardless

Yeah, that fight was over, with or without the late shot.

Looking at the replay, that was a bad shot, I think Edwards would have got up from the legal shots, but I don't know if he'd have survived the round, tough break getting counted out on an illegal shot either way though.

Edwards was unlucky he got hit with a dirty shot, but given that he got knocked out in 3 rounds, it's hard to see a rematch happening, even in a lower weight division which isn't the most competitive.

He got hit with a 10-15 punch combination beforehand and was getting run down. The luck was getting hit while being down so it was a NC

Champion97's picture

He was, but we've seen fighters get through torrid rounds before, it seems likely he would have got stopped clean, but it wasn't case closed. Martinez just got announced as the winner, I know results can be over turned, but I'd be surprised if this one was, I know Rigondeaux vs Flores was changed to an NC, but usually these controversial finishes are left as they are.

It was case closed, Edwards had no answer for Martinez's offense and was taking damage. It wasn't just a one-shot knockdown or one round where Edwards was getting hit clean. WBC ruled it a no contest, Edwards retains his championship but it sounds like he will move up which makes sense. No sense in getting stopped by Martinez again.

It was not case closed, you say it was, let's agree to disagree. My bad, I am not live, but it's fair enough. You say that as if Edwards and Hearn don't think they can beat Martinez, but I don't think that's the case, still, if you are drained, move up. If Edwards moves up, the Yafai fight will almost certainly happen, there is a rivalry between them.

Gold's picture

I don't think they believe Edwards can win a rematch, but agree to disagree. Seen in a lot of places it may be Estrada vs. Yafai next. Would be a good fight. If not, Yafai vs. Edwards seems like a good option. I didn't know about their rivalry, is it from the amateurs?

Champion97's picture

Makes sense, because he would have the highest ranking with the WBC, but if Yafai and Edwards build a grudge match, it would sell. I really don't know, but I think so, either way, they do not like each other, and if they are with the same promoter, same weight, the fight may well happen. I remember seeing Yafai and Edwards going at it verbally, and thinking the fight was unlikely because they were 2 divisions apart at that stage, but that was a few years back.
