Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

A few people have reached out recently about being able to add fights, and I'm going to upgrade their permissions. And so, some new editors are going to join us. Here are the basics for adding fights to the Fight Vault. I can refer new editors here instead of going over the process with each person. I'll be modifying this post as I think of more things.

1) Make sure you are entering a fight that is not already added. This is number one. This a problem, as we have multiple duplicates now, each with fan cards, and that is difficult for me to merge in the database. Also, we get requests from people all the time asking for fights to be added... that actually are already added. So check first!

2) The only acceptable image is the promotional poster. Screen grabs and photos found online are not okay for the image. These are copyrighted, and we can't use them. I'll be doing some cleanup on the database to address this issue in the coming weeks.

3) If you add fights on EOTR, you are a Fight Editor. As such, you are to some extent representing the community. I think this means being as friendly as possible to other judges, because they need to be able to ask for fights to be added.

Also, any fights added by our group of Editors are very much appreciated. Any time put in to make the site better is appreciated. By everyone in the community. I want to make it easier for you guys. So, I'm also going to be working on some upgrades to make being a Fight Editor much easier. Things I'm working on:

- a way to see all the fights you've added in one place
- a way to add fights partially, and save and come back, and only publish when it's complete
- making the new fight form a little easier to use
- a private forum area just for editors, I think this could be useful in a variety of ways

I'll post separate threads about those changes when they are closer to being done. I expect some time in the next two weeks to have some changes ready to publish to the live site. I also have a few other improvements that I was working on before I stepped away (unrelated to editing fights), and those will also get a post when I push them live, which should also be soon.

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

Hey Zoe, Clint here, thanks again for getting back to me, for all the work you've done, and for allowing me to contribute. I appreciate your efforts, and look forward to the upgrades you've laid out!

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

I would like to add fights to the vault please.

Don't tell me I missed out on getting to add fights again, because I didn't see the topic until 3 days later. I've been wanting to add fights forever, plase come back soon Zoe.

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

Likewise, I was going to try to add Gvozdyk vs. Chilemba but saw I didn't have the permissions to do it.

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

Hit me with a list, I have some time tonight and can square ya.

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

The only ones that I have on my mind right now are all of the relevant Michael Spinks fights I was going to add later, I put all of the important info in the request thread. Those would take a while to add though so if I'm added I may just do it myself.

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

I don't have that power, but can add the fights if you add which ones you'd like. Just continue the list on the normal thread, and I got ya. I can find the pertinent details on Boxrec to fill out everything, so you can just let me know which ones you'd like.

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

Thanks, I appreciate it!

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

People who act as nice as pie but are very nasty are the worst.

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

I got your Spinks list started, think at least 4-5 of them, but now that you are in the action, I'll leave the rest to you. Just wanted to post it, so we wouldn't step on each other's toes as we are adding fights, and so we don't duplicate.

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

Yeah, I'll try to finish them out today or tomorrow, thanks for adding the ones you did add.

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

No problem man. Had some shit come up around the casa, or would have gotten a few more. Looked for promo posters for all, but couldn't find any for the ones I added. If you know of any for those fights, that you could link me to, I'd be happy to update it. I started a forum list of fights I've added, since my memory sucks, so if you have any edit suggests, or want to start a similar list for yourself, that should be a good spot for it.

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

Hi Gold, I've upgraded your permissions. You should see a "Add Content" link on your user menu (top right). That takes you to the link to add fights. Try it out, I'll be checking in with you guys later on to see how it's going.

And thankyou for being willing to add to EOTR! One of our biggest features is the extensive database of fights.

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

I now have the permissions, thanks!

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

I'm sure she'll see this soon, but in the mean time, there are a couple of us actively working on them now, so keep firing away, and we'll get them on ASAP.

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

Hi Matchroom, I've upgraded your permissions too. You should see the link to "Add Content" on your user menu - top right - that takes you to the link to add fights. It's a fairly straightforward form from there. I don't think we've interacted before, but glad to have you join the editing crew.

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

Weird that this comment is displaying down here. It was a reply to above.

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

Oh my gosh thank you!

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

Hi all, just wanted to say a few more things about adding fights. My initial post above was just touching on some of the top important points. I have a lot more to say about adding fights, and this won't be all of it, but I wanted to get some more thoughts posted while I have some time.

1) Be slow when you are filling out the form. I hope you have noticed that there is an auto-complete that happens when you are typing in values. Let the auto-complete fill in the form for you if it finds the correct match. If you don't do this, WE END UP WITH DUPLICATES, which creates problems in the database.

2) If you are adding fights and the auto-complete does not find a match for the names of people you are typing, just type in their names and complete the form. When the form is submitted, the names of the people will be added to the database, and the newly added fighters will have a new fighter page generated for them as soon as the new fight is added. Magic. (I say "people" because the automatic adding works for refs and judges too, altho they don't have personal pages on EOTR at the moment.)

3) Titles. Champ is listed first. Occasionally there are fights where there isn't a consistent billing on a lot of major sites across the internet. Meaning, the fighters are ordered differently site to site. I've seen this on a few bigger fights but I can't remember which ones, it's been a while. If there is any question on this regard, follow what Boxrec does.

4) Just fyi there are other fight contributors on the site other than you guys on this thread. I doubt it matters to any of you, but I just thought I'd let you know.

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

Hey, thanks again Zoe for allowing me to contribute. I knew there were a few of us, just wasn't sure of an exact number; only knew of Champ and I for sure as editors. I've added a few fights, and have tried to follow the basics you laid out for us. I also made a list in the forum, for my own memory, and for others to suggest edits, on fights I've added to the database. I'm sure you have a way to track that on your end, but in the event that is not the case, you'll know where to go if there are any issues on the fights I've added. I was looking over the older days of the site, back in 2011 or so, and noticed that there were first page articles, videos, etc, sort of in the vain of the "Boxing News" forum I created, that were done by users named Nick Foxx and Mario Roberts. Is there anyway we could bring that back in a form? I know Champion does his pre-fight prediction write ups, and I often find interesting news and videos about the fight game, and think both of our activities could drive more views if they were main page contributions, rather than people having to find them on an individual fights or the forums. Just a thought, as I thought those were pretty cool little contributions. Anyways, thanks again for your work on the site!

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

How did you find that old stuff?? That brings back memories of building the site. I had some friends that were dabbling in writing articles for us.

I can bring back articles if you guys want to write them. And I like the write-ups Champ is doing, I would like to highlight those somehow too. Let me take a look at what I used to have set up for articles... it might be easy to turn it back on, for lack of a better phrase.

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

I told you in the email I'd done some homework on the site, haha. No, I just scrolled to the bottom of the fight list, and went to last, and it showed me the oldest stuff. I'd love it. Champ has the fight mockups down pat, so would love to see those highlighted. I tend to follow a lot more prospects, and fight news/rumors, etc, and would love to do little preview on up and comers, and maybe do something similar to what they were doing, where I can highlight Youtube footage of fight camps, pressers, or other interesting stuff in the sports. I've dabbled with some sports writing articles, too, so would really enjoy it. Take your time, but if/when you figure out how you'd like to do it, I've love it!

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

If you go through the fighters A-Z list one by one (which I did, yeah I have a problem with OCD) you can see the fights that didn't get a date added that don't show up in the vault in the chronological order they should, if that helps. Thanks again for allowing me permission Zoe, this has been something I've been wanting for a very long time.

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

You're welcome. Glad to have a few more contributors. (answering some old comments, please excuse the delay.)

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

One other thing I was wondering if you could look into Zoe, when a fight that gets added gets deleted (usually because it ends in first round stoppage) then the entire page of fights for that day in the 2010's category shows a error when you try to load it, so you can't score any other fights on the page from the same card or even later that day until whatever causes the error goes away. It's doing it right now, I'm trying to score Matchroom's NextGen show but someone must have deleted a fight that ended in 1 round because the whole page wont load, to score the other fights from the card or later today for the PBC card or HBO's. Is there something you can do to fix the error from happening when someone deletes a fight that ends in the first round?

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

That's down to me, sorry, I didn't know it was causing any technical issues

Re: Adding Fights to the Fight Vault

Hi all,

I created a private forum for EOTR contributors. I sometimes speak very vaguely when I'm describing how the site works, because the forum posts are public. A private forum will allow me to speak more freely. And generally I think it will be convenient for a variety of other reasons.

I'm going to move the content I've posted so far about adding fights into this new private forum, and also add more detail to that content. When that's done, I'll delete the public threads about the how-to regarding adding content to the site.
