Fight Notes:

In one of the most anticipated fights of all time, Muhammad Ali again shocks the world by upsetting undefeated Heavyweight Champion George Foreman in Zaire. Employing what would become known as the "rope-a-dope" strategy, Ali lies on the ropes for much of the fight, goading Foreman into punching himself out. In the eighth round, Ali lets his hands go with pinpoint accuracy, sending Foreman to the canvas for the knockout and becoming only the second man to regain the Heavyweight Championship.

Champion97's picture

This was the win of Ali's career, he had the perfect game plan, was on the ropes for long enough for the opportunity to make Foreman miss, but didn't stay there too long, didn't let Foreman use his size by leaning on him or rely too much on blocking, and by getting off the ropes, he made Foreman have to try to force the tempo, which took a lot out of Foreman, he struggled to cut Ali off and was made to reach with some of his shots. I think Ali had the worst style for Foreman, and he knew Foreman well, I think Foreman could have done better, but Ali had his number.

Agreed that's why this is probably one of the most famous fights in history without question. The atmosphere, the electricity that was in the air on that night was unmatchable. You have my top ten favorite pound for pound fighter vs top 20. These are true legends of the heavyweight division and I believe they would thrive in any era you could put them in. Can you imagine Rocky Marciano vs George Foreman, Ali vs Lewis, Foreman vs Liston, Ali vs Johnson, and Foreman vs Tyson. The hours and hours I could spend talking about the greatness and unpredictability of those matches.

One of the greatest upsets led to one of the greatest matches. I think Foreman might have won a rematch had he not gotten all depressed after this fight, but even then for the next two years he had great matches. His 5 round knockout of Ron Lyle and the upset loss against Jimmy Young was another battle of the ages. Still though nothing quite equates to this. I believe without this match Ali wouldn't be looked at the same way he is today. People would remember his amazing skill that he displayed in his prime years but that would be it.

I can't remember his name but I can still remember the commentator saying, "Ali has won! Ali has won! This the most joyous day in the history of boxing!" That is a very underrated commentator call and I also love Bob Shannon's commentating here. I always loved his commentating and I think its cool that he still does it today for Iron Mike Productions.

Sandpeat's picture

I think the commentator you are referring to is Harry Carpenter. I had a video with his commentary years ago but lost it. Would love another copy if anyone out there has it.

rorschach's picture

Ali does what Ali does shocks the world and produces greatness.

rorschach's picture

I still wont have been born (for almost years yet) when this fight takes place, but this fight and his first fight against Liston are the first 2 Ali fights I saw, and the fights that made him my favorite. I loved that man, total hero worship not just as a great boxer & famous figure but as a great person too.

what_is_the_default_password's picture

The fight that achieved mythical status in popular culture.

The popular interpretation of this event seems to be that Ali lay on the ropes to let Foreman punch himself out. But after actually watching the fight one should realise such an interpretation is gross simplification. Ali did play with the ropes, but he did not do it just to be a punching bag. Ali countered off the ropes beautifully. Furthermore, I feel that the real enabler of Ali's knockout of Foreman was not the fabled 'rope-a-dope' but Ali's incessant wrestling. Ali out-roughed the rough Foreman, grabbing, yanking and pushing Foreman after every other punch he landed. All these illegal tactics drained Foreman's already paltry stamina. If Ali was not Ali, he would have been penalised for sure, especially when Ali executed it without any concern of subtlety. On a side note, it really irritates me how some boxing fans would idolise Ali while mocking the likes of Mayweather and Klitschko for their punch-and-grab tactics.

Nevertheless, it was an incredible performance from the Greatest.

The greats are closer then people think. The usually fought each other out of the prime. LISTON AND FOREMAN DESTROYED NORTON, FRAZIER, COOPER, PATTERSON,OF THE WORKD. ALI HAS trouble with them. Liston fights were fixed. Louis, marciano, Ali Forman are closer then u think.

One of a series of fights in Ali's career that has to be seen to be believed. Maybe a bit too good to be true...

Chris M95's picture

pretty much most of the first 5 rounds could be scored either way cuz even with Ali landing the cleanest 2-3 shots..bombs and punches most likely to be etched in your mind at the end of every round since the first Foreman was landing occasional good shots to the head also had had a much better work rate all the while touching Ali especially with the body shots while most of them was landing hands flailing and wide Foreman was able to land shorter too and more damaging body blows in rounds like 3 and 5 when Ali leaned completely back on the ropes and exposed his body...while people like to note the myth of Foreman leading wide and beating on ALi and "ali pulling a miracle ko" same time aint it a exaggeration also to state ALi was counter punching with Mayweather level defense off the ropes without taking damage like he would have dreamed off working on this game plan for Foreman off the Peralta fight even with Foreman being the one on the receiving end of the single most damaging 2 or 3 blows most rds per rd since rd 1...same time problem with Foreman winning close rds was Ali not just stealing em rounds but putting himself to in that position landing short right counters leading over the top that was hard to miss (generally last minute) for the judges after catching a good portion of Foreman's body punches on his shoulders rolling with FOreman's punches even with Foreman being able to do damage...(the kind of shots ALi took in certain instances had Mayweather took woulda been in highlight reels of Floyd's opponents)...and THEN having made them rounds close like rd 2...THEN trying to stealing em with bombs in the final 10 secs or so like in rd 2 and the other early rds with a willing opponent having made himself an easier target coming in swinging away rather than a fighter more aware of an opponent trying to steal rds vs him at the end of rounds like Sturm was in the middle rds vs DLH after DLH may have stole one of the earlier rds with a late flurry

Ali early reminded me of McGregor stealing rds 2 & 5 off Farooq in 2019 landing rights near the end of rds with an opponent coming in
