R1- In an interview before the fight, Floyd successfully predicts that he will beat Genaro Hernandez and Arturo Gatti, and that he would become world champion in 1998. Despite his poor record, Garcia is able to slip a mumber of shots from Mayweather, who is still scoring with jabs, right hands, and left hooks without much difficulty. A left hook to the body seems to momentarily take the wind out of Garcia late in the round.

R2- Funny how commentary cites that Mayweather insists that his jab is his best weapon, when it would eventually become a less frequent part of his arsenal. While Garcia is proving himself to be an even more awkward target in this round than the last, Mayweather does trap him on the ropes at one point and land some thudding body blows.

R3- Mayweather traps Garcia on the ropes early and hits him with a combo to the body again. Beyond that, the jab of Mayweather is the only thing really landing for him, but Garcia himself does not seem to be able to land clean.

R4- Now Mayweather is having an easier time countering and tracking the head of Garcia during his defensive rolls. Mayweather is also getting out of the way of everything thrown by Garcia and is still landing his best shots of the round to the body.

R5- The combinations to the body are landing even more frequently for Mayweather and they are opening up opportunities to the head as well. Garcia seems to connect with a left hook near the end, but this was overall the most lopsided round yet. Things would not get any better for Garcia in the next round, though.

R6- We see Mayweather use his forearm for the first time in his career. The body shots and uppercuts are landing for Mayweather, who is consistently cutting the ring off on Garcia. The displeased crowd gets a surprise, as Mayweather catches Garcia in a squared up stance, blitzing him with a 3-4 combination, sending him crashing on his back. Mayweather also lands another right on Garcia as he’s falling. Garcia lays there flat with his gloves up and gets counted out. Not the most exciting performance from Mayweather, but he still dominated an awkward customer. Garcia did not win any rounds, but showed that records can be deceiving and made Mayweather work for the win. Certainly a contender for the best KO of 1997.
