R1- Unlike his last bout, Charlo is busy with combinations, hunting to the head and body alike. After wisely sidestepping Rodriguez, Charlo lights him up with straight rights through the guard and left hooks to the body and head, briefly having Rodriguez hurt. Good start for Charlo.

R2- Despite taking some damage in the first round, Rodriguez bounces back pretty well here. He finds a home for the counter left, and is keeping that hand on his cheek in order to block several rights from Charlo.

R3- Though it’s not always landing, Charlo is keeping the jab out there to set up his combinations, with the left hook to the body being the most effective ingredient in them. Charlo is also catching the southpaw coming in with left hooks and right hands often. Precise stuff from Jermell.

R4- Rodriguez shows some pretty good durability, as he eats a lot of heavy leather from Charlo throughout. A lot of the fight takes place in close quarters, where Charlo is able to outgun and outpace him with ease. Several left hooks, even a nigh-gazelle hook score for Charlo, but Rodriguez takes them well.

R5- Courtesy of the double jab and Rodriguez moving straight in, Charlo now has his man dead to rights. A series of 1-2’s and 1-2-3’s has Rodriguez buzzed briefly, but he recovers fast. Charlo times a thudding right flush on Rodriguez, but he stands up to it.

R6- Despite the nice momentum he had built, Charlo seems to take this round off. As he should have from the start, Rodriguez puts his right jab to use. It certainly is not landing a lot, but it is helping him get inside more where he can land combinations. Rodriguez’ accuracy isn’t great and several shots of his are glancing, but Charlo is not doing much in return.

R7- Like Paulie said, the rounds Charlo won, were done precisely, where as the rounds Rodriguez won (or arguably did), were done simply from the lack of activity from Charlo. The jab of Charlo gets him back in control, allowing him to pinpoint several right hands and left hooks on Rodriguez.

R8- Rodriguez shows urgency early, as he comes out swinging for the fences. Charlo decides to sit back and load a right hand counter, but Rodriguez makes for an awkward target. Late, Charlo shows some good upper body movement against the ropes before countering Rodriguez upstairs with a right and particular big left hook. Charlo follows up until the bell sounds.

R9- Showing patience, Charlo lets Rodriguez bring the fight to him, allowing him to land chopping rights and body shots. A double left hook to the body then head is easily his best moment in the round. Rodriguez has success in what is one of his better rounds, but Charlo definitely did more to deserve it.

R10- Charlo starts putting combos together from the getgo. A left uppercut staggers Rodriguez, causing Charlo to swarm him and unload 1-2’s and left hooks to the body. Rodriguez staggers across the ring into the ropes, warranting himself a count. Charlo celebrates prematurely. Rodriguez is still groggy, and quickly drops his hands, never to bring them back up. Charlo seems to be having effect with everything he lands at this point, most particularly with left hooks to the head and body. Rodriguez bends into a lead right, causing him to move out of the way from an uppercut on his way to turning his back, thus leading to the end of the fight. Rodriguez put forth a respectable effort in my opinion and certainly did enough to snag a couple of rounds, but Charlo was way too much in every category. Charlo looked excellent aside from a few lazy moments and rounds, as it seemed he had a chip on his shoulder from the stinkfest against Hopkins. It was clear seeing this that Charlo’s power carries to the end, that he gets stronger late, and that he was clearly not done getting better. Solid win for Charlo, who sent Rodriguez packing after this loss.
