Prediction.

Porter has the better wins, but Crawford is a heavy favourite because of how easy his career has been, ans because Porter has a few losses. These are 2 of the most professional athletes in boxing, I think both live the life more than most fighters. Timing could favour either fighter, both must have started declining, Porter has far more miles, is more reliant on physical attributes, and is coming off a longer layoff, but Porter has done a lot more rounds in recent years. Crawford is experienced at 147, but none of his opponents have had Porter's strength, Porter is definitely stronger than Crawford, and if he hasn't got old overnight, he can take Crawford's power. Porter doesn't have Crawford's ring IQ or timing, and I think Crawford is the better inside fighter, but it's very hard to comfortably out box Porter on the outisde because he cuts distance so well, his opponent is never comfortable in the pocket, he makes them work for every second. Both fighters are very fast in hand and foot, I think Crawford has the faster hands, but I think Porter has the faster feet, the better jab, and Crawford can't match his output. I don't think this is a great test for Crawford's chin, he's fought a few bigger punchers than Porter, but it's a great test of his overall durability.

I think Porter will start fast, will jab his way in, will get off first, Crawford will land the cleaner and harder shots, but Porter will out work him on the inside, over power him, and Crawford will be uncomfortable. I think Crawford's timing will improve in the mid rounds, he'll catch Porter as he's coming in, more often, land some double impact shots, will do damage, but he will struggle to use his feet to disrupt Porter's pressure, and Porter will use his own feet to keep Crawford in front of him for the majority of the rounds, I think Crawford will do a lot of damage at close range in the late rounds, but Porter will hold up well, and keep the pressure on, I think both fighters will finish strong, Crawford won't be able to push Porter back even when he lands a great shot, but Porter will get beaten to the punch as he goes for broke.

I think it will be close for shots landed, but Crawford will be far more accurate, do a lot more damage, and win fairly wide, I wouldn't be shocked if he got a stoppage, I'd be surprised if Porter got the upset, but I'm fairly confident Porter will go the distance.

FINALLY we see Crawford step up to fight one of the serious guys in the division.

I don't think Porter's style is good for anyone but Crawford will probably find him less of a problem stylistically than other fighters have. Crawford should be able to walk him onto shots but a lot may depend how easy or not Porter can get inside with getting caught heavy.

If Crawford has any weakness it's that I believe he can be outworked and he starts slow. Porter starts fast and has an enormous workrate. For those reasons it's an interesting fight. Crawford has one of the best ring IQ's on the planet.

I think either way, tonight we will see how good Crawford really is. If he knocks Porter out he will undoubtedly go to the top of my Welter rankings. He isn't currently purely because he hasn't faced high enough opposition but that all changes tonight.

I think Crawford will win but I'm not sure how. I expect he'll probably hurt Porter at some point, possibly 8/9 ish. If I had to go for it, I'll say Crawford 116-112 ish. 116-111 with a knockdown maybe!

Metalhead123's picture

What a disappointing ending to an otherwise amazing fight. I don't doubt that Crawford would have stopped him without Kenny's help, but you have to give a champion like Porter the benefit of the doubt. I understand that Kenny Porter saw his son taking punishment and he let his emotions get in the way, but the way he was discrediting his own son in his post fight interview. Saying he didn't work hard enough. The end of this fight left a bad taste in my mouth.

Couldn't agree more, I understand the stoppage but he threw his son under the bus

Metalhead123's picture

Two things have come out of this fight now. 1. Porter is calling it a career. 2. Bud is now a free agent.

Hopefully Bud can get good fights now.

beaunuitmem's picture

Curious if you still have a bad taste considering the retirement?
My interpretaion is that they'd discussed retirement pre-fight and once he saw the end coming (bearing in mind nobody knows Sean better than KP); a small chance of getting to the end of the fight wasn't worth the risk of injury to his grandchildren's guardian. Porter's one of my favourrite personalities in boxing and I'm happy he got to finish on his feet rather than on his back.

Metalhead123's picture

Sorta. I just really didn't like the way KP was talking about his son and how he prepared for the fight in the moments immediately after the fight. I just felt like it wasn't something he needed to say publicly in front of the whole world. Was the stoppage early? Yeah, a little bit, but it wasn't horrible. You gotta think, Porter was behind officially on the judges cards without a 10-7 going against him, and Crawford is a tremendous finisher. I think it could have kept going, but I'm happy for Porter that he is able to get out of the sport with his brains still in tact. I hope retirement is fruitful for him. He's had one hell of a career.

beaunuitmem's picture

Agree, agree, agree. Still not seen the post fight presser but I've always been an admirer of the father-son relationship between Sean and KP so as long as Sean isn't upset, hey-ho. Think Sean's one of my favourite analysts already so look forward to him giving more time to that.

beaunuitmem's picture

Saw the comments in the ring and originally thouhgt he was referring to sparring but you're right. The comments in the presser didn't need to be said right then but by the same token I admire their honesty. KP a proper man's man; you don't have to guess what he's thinking because he's gonna tell you if there's a problem.

Had Porter up but there were a lot of tough to score rounds. Generally speaking, I prioritize damage over everything else, and Bud was definitely hurt in more instances than Porter who despite taking a lot of clean shots kept coming forward and attacking as is his wont.

Overall this doesn't put Crawford above Spence IMO but it does show he's in the same league as a Welterweight. Out of all the Porter opponents only Ugas had an easy time with him. I thought Brook beat him clearly but it was still a tough fight. I felt Porter beat Thurman close. And I thought Spence just barely edged Porter by one point, with the knockdown being the deciding factor. It's hard to look great against Porter which says a lot about Ugas the dark horse of the division.

I dont know if I agree that porter hurt Crawford more. But yea damage is supposed to be prioritized

Porter made the right decision to retire, he's a 2 time world champion, isn't young, he'd been stopped for the first time, it was a great opportunity against Crawford. The stoppage was questionable, Porter hadn't taken too much damage, it was close on the cards, but he was hurt, and Crawford was building on it, Porter seemed too angry with himself for being dropped to focus on surviving. This was a great performance from Crawford, it was the win he needed, and he made a statement with the stoppage, it was a tougher fight than he'd had, it was a great test for him. Crawford was trying to be to Porter's left in the early rounds, he was looking to pivot off the right hook, but Porter was cutting him off, he took a few rounds to time Porter. Porter was coming in at a variety of angles, and he wasn't there to be countered. Both fighters nullified the others' jab, Crawford wasn't throwing his jab because Porter was always a moving target, but he comfortably blocked and leaned away from Porter's jab, Porter couldn't use his jab to score points or draw reactions out of Crawford. Crawford held up well mentally, was patient, and focusing more on body shots than head shots was the right tactic, Porter took the body shots well, but they slowed Porter's legs down just enough for Crawford to take advantage, Porter was still able to come in with the right hand in the later rounds, the difference was, Crawford was able to respond, partly because Porter had slowed down, and partly because Crawford adapted to Porter's attacks, was setting up his shots with his feet, Porter's foot speed was a problem for Crawford, Crawford couldn't put him on the ropes, but there was more method to Crawford's footwork, he did his best work at mid range, and that was when he was able to use his feet Porter made the right decision to retire, he's a 2 time world champion, isn't young, he'd been stopped for the first time, it was a great opportunity against Crawford. Great fight. Pretty much went as I expected it to to be honest but I thought Porter would probably get to the bell.

My card was pretty one sided to Crawford but that's because I have him all the very close rounds that was tremendously difficult to score (I wouldn't argue with anyone that had Porter ahead).

At the time of the stoppage I thought it was really premature but having watched it back I think Sean's legs were really weak and I can't argue with saving him.

Really disappointed in what Sean's dad said about preparation. He didn't deserve that. Porter's been a great fighter, a great champion and a great personality. He's fought everyone and proved himself to be a warrior. You could see how upset he was when his dad said that. He's had a great career.

Porter's legacy to me is that he completely turned me into a fan. I was a bit of a hater in his earlier career if I'm honest, didn't like his mauling style but he's earned the respect. I thought he fought this fight smart up until the last few rounds. Bud frustrated him, he stated lunging in and lost his discipline a bit. It cost him.

As for bud, he didn't dominate quite as much as a lot of people expected but he got the job done in the end. Knocking out Porter is a big deal. Who will he fight next? I feel like Spence is still few fights away. I think Crawford retires Thurman if they get it on. Garcia maybe? The only guy in the same league is Spence.

I've always said calling Crawford pound for pound number 1 is premature and I still believe that. But I do believe he's a special fighter.

Do you stil have genuine hope Crawford Spence will happen at 147? I'd be surprised if Spence fought anybody at 147 again other than the winner of the Ugas-Stanionis-Butaev triangle.

I do mate. Did you see the tweet that PBC sent and that Spence retweeted it? They've got their eye on the fight now that bud is a free agent.

I still feel like they will milk one or two more gimmies for spence before it happens though. The way of doing things now days is to wait until these fights are way past their sell by date and then do it.

p.s. did you score the fight? what was your card like?

Didn't see the tweet but that's encouraging, just not sure if Spence is still gonna be the same guy at 147. Suspect they might have been keeping him there a bit longer so Charlo could clean up but Castano threw a spanner in the works.
I didn't score the fight properly because I was watching with a mate and we were talking but it was pretty even before the 10th, maybe had Porter a round in front.
