Jarod Killian's picture

As usual for me ever since Canelo fought Yildirim, I will be putting a wager on a Canelo win in this one as well.

I can't see Plant beating Canelo, this is a huge step up from competition for Caleb, and while he has some slick defence and a decent jab that might give Canelo some trouble in the early rounds, he also has some major stamina issues and we saw against Uzcategui where he lost almost every round in the second half of that fight. We also know that Canelo has a granite chin, and Caleb doesn't have the power to give Canelo issues there, as he wasn't even able to stop Truax. Plant doesn't like pressure, and that's exactly what Canelo is going to do all night. I think Canelo will stop Plant somewhere along the lines of when he stopped Saundes, maybe rounds 7-10, I wouldn't be surprised if this fight went the distance, and Caleb is able to snatch a few rounds in the beginning, but ultimately I don't think this fight will go the full 12. I would be shocked if Plant pulled off the upset given the cards are stacked against him.

Canelo KO/Plant Decision. If Canelo doesn't KO Plant, Al Haymon and PBC probably robs Canelo on the cards.

Al Haymon and PBC will do their best to make Canelo fight more than once on the PBC Banner.

Prediction: 50% Chance this fight actually happens. It's not a coincidence Benavidez fight was moved to November as well. Think AL Haymon and PBC will pull the fake injury card again and have David replace Plant to make it a 2 fight PBC deal.

Else Canelo KO/Plant Decision. If Canelo doesn't KO Plant, Al Haymon and PBC probably robs Canelo on the cards.

Al Haymon and PBC will do their best to make Canelo fight more than once on the PBC Banner.

dude Canelo is NEVER losing a fight by decision. Unless he's fighting Floyd in a rematch. Outside of that EVEN if he were to lose on points like Lara and GGG the judges will give him the gift decision. The only way I see Canelo ever losing is by stoppage and there are only 2 guys out there I could see pulling it off Morrell or Beterbiev. And even THEN....I wouldn't be shocked if Canelo were to get stopped by a body shot the ref claims it was a "low blow" and DQ's Canelo's opponent or post-fight they "find" some substance on Canelo's opponent's piss and declare it a NC.

If Canelo is looking for a real challenge at 168 then he should be calling out David Morrell. Now that's a guy at 168 that I could see posing a real challenge to Canelo but Plant and Benavidez will be easy. Other challenging fights out there for Canelo are Demetrius Andrade and Artur Beterbiev (175).

Prediction.

Plant has more speed in hand and foot, and he has a better jab, Canelo hits a lot harder, not being the puncher isn't new to Plant, but he's usually the better counter puncher, the more accurate, and has better reflexes, and I think Canelo is better in all those aspects. Plant can't hurt Canelo at all, he will struggle to get any respect from Canelo. Plant's footwork is very good, but Canelo's is better, and I doubt Plant's use of the ring will be a problem for Canelo at all. Plant is fairly experienced, but he has nothing like Canelo's experience, both have a high ring IQ, but a battle of tactics favours Canelo. Plant's stamina is questionable based on his only meaningful fight, and even if it has improved a lot, I don't think Plant can stop Canelo dictating the pace, I don't think he can frustrate Canelo or neutralise his ring generalship. Plant's lateral movement is great aside from foot movement, he leans to either side, but Canelo has that skill as well, has great head movement, and when Canelo is in range, and times Plant, Plant has no defence, because of his poor blocking. Plant has a longer reach than most of Canelo's best opponents, but Canelo cuts distance so well, I doubt that will be an issue. Plant has been out of the ring for longer than ideal, Canelo has fought twice since, which makes winning an even bigger ask for Plant.

I think Plant will look to establish his jab, will feint, will be a moving target, Canelo will be mentally busy, and he will need time to settle into a rhythm, but he will cut off the ring, defend well, will be prepared to let Plant expend by working hard mentally, will let Plant move, but keep Plant in front of him. I think Canelo will time Plant early, will step into range with the counter left hook, Plant will have to keep throwing his jab to keep Canelo on the outside and stop him getting off first, and whenever he hesitates, Canelo will throw the lead right to the body. I think Canelo will be a step ahead of Plant in rounds 4-6, his feints will offset Plant, force him to move defensively when Canelo doesn't throw, but Canelo won't need to react to Plant's feints, Plant will struggle with Canelo's variety, and won't be able to anticipate his shots. I think Plant will slow down slightly after 6 rounds, that's when Canelo will throw 2 shot combinations, mainly to the body, Plant will still match him for shots thrown, but he'll be throwing under sustained pressure, his shots will be forced, and Canelo will be in full control of the pace. I think Plant will be gassed in the late rounds, Canelo will walk him down, attack head and body, Plant will be trapped in the pocket, he'll be forced to fight on instinct, leave openings easy openings, and Canelo will knock him out with a counter.

Plant is good, I think he's underrated, but I don't think he's on Canelo's level, and I'd be shocked if he won this, I wouldn't be surprised if he went the distance, but I wouldn't be surprised if Canelo got an early stoppage. My prediction is Canelo late.

Canelo inside 7 rounds

Plant simply isn't good enough

Weak from Canelo in all honesty, Usyk is absolutely clear of Canelo p4p.
Usyk dismantled and dominated a unified champion 20 lbs bigger than him, Canelo had a close fight with a guy whose only good win so far is Uzcategui.
The only reason why Canelo is rated higher is because he's more popular.

petieroach's picture

Except it wasn’t close. Canelo’s class shone as the fight went on and there’s no way in hell plant had a shot in the championship rounds.

Canelo has been fighting the best while being more active than any other top champion. - usyk is not above him

Looking at the scorecards here, there are more 96-94 and 95-95 scorecards than any other score, I think it's fair to say that that is indicative of the fight being close.

"Canelo has been fighting the best while being more active than any other top champion" - Has Usyk not been fighting the best? He cleared out a competitive 200lb division that was much stronger than the 168lb division full of paper champions that Canelo just cleared out.

Sure, Canelo has been more active than Usyk in this past year, but Usyk's single dominant win as the underdog against a long-reigning two-time unified champion 20 lbs bigger than him is more impressive than all of Canelo's wins against overmatched opposition this year put together.

Canelo vs Smith: -700 favorite
Canelo vs Yildirim: -5000 favorite
Canelo vs Saunders: -800 favourite
Canelo vs Plant: -1200 favourite

In essence: Usyk cleared out a better division, AND went up a weight class to pull off an underdog victory in more convincing fashion than any of Canelo's recent wins bar Smith (who really should not have been champion after he robbed Ryder) and the laughably overmatched Yildirim.

Usyk is easily p4p clear of Canelo. Again: people simply rank Canelo higher because he's the big celebrity, the cash cow, whereas Usyk is a weird, still-somewhat unknown Eastern European.

I have no problem with anyone rating Canelo at no.1. He’s really developed into a great pro and has been on a fantastic roll for the past 3 years.
However, I do agree with you in personally rating Usyk at the top. People underestimate the support system that fighters as popular as Canelo enjoy. It dictates the timing of key fights to their advantages, providing them with what might be a slight but significant edge, influences judges and allows fighters to develop to their full potential. Oscar DeLaHoya’s support system very much worked for him and convinced the US media that he should supplant Roy Jones as the premier fighter in the game. Whilst that was far from outrageous, it was undeserved. He was something of a weight bully at the early stage of his championship career, his win over a faded Chavez was overhyped, and the decisions over Whitaker and Quartey highly contentious. Canelo’s route to the top followed a similar template.
Usyk never had the support system that Canelo enjoys. He’s had to beat top fighters in their backyards, key fights were never marinated or timed to give him an edge and, as you rightly point out, he gave away substantial weight in putting on his 9-3 clinic v Joshua.
The ‘pound for pound’ race is tight. Inoue also stakes a claim, Crawford is also right up there. But I’ve got to say, the sheer technical brilliance of Usyk in unifying the cruiser titles against Gassiev, and now the undressing of AJ actually rate higher than anything those other guys have thus far managed in their careers.

Totally agree. Usyk has fought on the road in other champions' backyards for years now, winning without controversy every single time, while Canelo has enjoyed all the benefits of A-side advantages for most of his career: 155 lb catchweights, rehydration clauses, hometown judging etc. as well as the whole clenbuterol situation. That should be taken into consideration in the p4p debate.

Canelo hater spotted. Guy just beat 3 undefeated champions and 1 mandatory defense in the span of 11 months.

What did fellow p4p fighters like Crawford,Inoue,Spence do in that span? Inoue’s even fighting a bum who’s #55 on boxrec next.

Gtfoh man, please.

Are you sure you're responding to the right guy? When did I say Crawford, Inoue or Spence were better than Canelo? I didn't even mention any of those fighters in my comment lmfao

Usyk is p4p #1, Canelo is p4p #2.

Canelo becoming undisputed in under a year is a great feat, that's why he's p4p #2 behind Usyk. No need to be so defensive just because I don't blindly ride Canelo.

He might be replying to me. Well, I’ve got Canelo #2 as well, and I also stated I have no problem with him at the very top. People certainly have a low standard for what constitutes ‘hate’ nowadays.
Canelo is a legitimately great fighter, although the previous poster’s point about him beating 3 champs in 11 months doesn’t, or shouldn’t, carry as much weight as it generally does. The only reason there’s so many ‘champs’ per division is, of course, simply because there are too many sanctioning bodies. In a world where only one body existed how many title holders would a long reigning champ defeat? Probably just one, the guy he took it from.
I would also add that the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez, the man whom Alvarez is now being compared to by many observers, defeated fighters who were superior to the standard of Smith, Saunders and Plant, but who didn’t actually manage to win world titles themselves. And that was even before he left 130lb. In terms of resume, Canelo still falls a long way short of the greatest ever Mexican icon.

Fun fight. Clearly the best opponent he's had at 168.

Plant did a lot better than I expected, his jab was a problem for Canelo in the early rounds, he established his jab before Canelo could step in, the battle of the footwork was interesting, Canelo was cutting off the ring, Plant struggled to use his lateral movement, but Canelo couldn't always keep him in front of him. Plant held up relatively well on the inside, he tied Canelo's left hand, and rolled with the right hand, so Canelo couldn't use his free hand to work in the clinch. Canelo couldn't dictate the tempo to the extent he did against Smith and Saunders, but the momentum was still well on his side after 4 rounds, he kept Plant on the defensive more and more often, as the fight went on, he was patient, was taking more out of Plant than himself even when Plant was defending well, did all the damage, and the right uppercut was a great shot, it was partly because of Plant's fatuige, and it was the beginning of the end for Plant. Plant definitely raised his stock, he gave Canelo his toughest fight in 2 years.
