It was a absolute honor to watch and score this championship match between two all time greats. It is true louis's best days were past him, but he still fought like a true champion and gave what he had left in this performance. Charles younger faster and slicker beat the aging Brown Bomber to the punch all night and left no doubt as to who won the contest.

Re: Ezzard Charles vs Joe Louis
Ray Arcel, who tried and failed so many times to unseat Joe Louis, finally did what his could not with his previous fighters. Ezzard Charles fought the perfect fight, whether it was afar or up close Charles controlled the fight. Louis appeared at times befuddled, but he never give up and did enough to shut one of Charles' eyes.
It is true Louis was far past his prime, but Charles was not in his absolute prime too despite being the younger man; Charles' prime died with Sam Baroudi. If both men were younger, faster and lighter I believe Charles would still give Louis serious headache in the ring. Charles deserve more credit for this fight.
Joe Louis should have retired permanently after this fight. A good fight against a fellow all-time great is as proper a send-off for a legend like Louis as any. Unfortunately tax-issues kept Louis in the ring, and the greatest Heavyweight in the world had to meet his end in an undignified manner at the hands of the crude Marciano.

Re: Ezzard Charles vs Joe Louis
A rather forgotten classic! Even though Louis was clearly past his prime he put up a great effort and it was very competative during the early rounds. I think round 14 could possibly be scored 10:8 for Charles. Louis really showed the heart of a champion and Charles his fine boxing skills!
