Comments

This is going to be an interesting one to say the least. Obviously Dillian Whyte was winning comfortably up until the Knockout. On the other hand Povetkin showed a kind of power and ability to place the shots you don't typically find, especially at his age.

So far in his career, the uppercut has been Dillian Whyte's Krypronite, it's dropped him no less than 3 times and knocked him out twice. Given Whyte's penchant for body work, it often time leads to him leaning in and putting himself right in line for that punch. In the case of the last fight it was Whyte's poor footwork that left him out of position so that punch could land to full effect.

As far as Povetkin goes, it's always been said to beware of an old man in a career where men die young. Last fight is why people say that. He may not have the speed or reflexes he used to, but his power sure hasn't nor has his experience.

What this fight comes down to is this: will Dillian Whyte learn from what happened last time and tighten his defense? Is he maybe coming back too soon after such a nasty KO loss? Will he be as sharp?

It's Dillian Whyte's fight to lose just like last time. At age 41 Povetkin's about as good as he's ever going to be. It's going to come down to if Whyte makes a mistake and gives him the opening again.

AJ Knight, great analysis, especially the second paragraph, Whyte has definitely proved to be susceptible to the uppercut.

Prediction.

Whyte will be prepared for the left uppercut this time, but the question is if Povetkin can set up another great shot as he set up the uppercut. Whyte has learned on the job, Povetkin can still use his experience, but I think Whyte has more room for improvement, and he'll make even fewer mistakes this time. I don't think Povetkin has a bad style for Whyte, he isn't predominantly a counter puncher, Whyte was being first at long range last time, and Povetkin was out of range. I think Povetkin has more tweaks to make, the last fight would have favoured Whyte down the stretch, given his age, size, and how much more the early rounds took out of Povetkin than Whyte.

I think the early rounds will be similar to last time, Whyte will be busy with the jab, Povetkin will struggle to move into range quick enough, but will be patient, won't be frustrated. I think Povetkin will look for the right hand more often this time, because he has power in both hands, and was trying to set up the left hook more last time. I think Povetkin will have more success in the mid rounds, as his patience pays off, and he's able to get into range more often, I think he'll hurt Whyte with a different shot to the left uppercut, but that set up and 1 shot KO was a big ask the first time, I doubt he'll do it again, and this time Whyte will make him miss if he goes for the finish, and land the jab if he eases off. I think Povetkin will be gassed after 6 or 7 rounds, will step back, that's when Whyte will throw the right hand, left hook combination, and stop Povetkin.

I'd be surprised if Povetkin won this, not shocked, but I think Whyte will stop him in the late rounds, I wouldn't be surprised if this went the distance.

i think whyte wins, UD with a few problems on the way. 65/35 to whyte. but i can see the same scenario again where whyte traps himself and cant get out. i belive whyte can get a knockdown or 2, povietkin may be able to get one of his own. whyte controlled the first fight, but ran into a trap that he got stuck in for a few seconds. WHYTE, BUT A UD

Chris M95's picture

picked Povetkin to win but nervous as hell now is it just me or the guy seems off...real lethargic walking into the ring...not too dissimilar from the vibes i got from Berchelt before the Valdez fight

Povetkin just doesn't have anything left at this point. He didn't have his feet with him from the opening bell, and I think Covid might have had something to do with it. The fact that he was rehospitalized is also a concern.

Champion97's picture

Povetkin didn't just lack speed and take a while to recover after fighting at a high tempo like against Joshua and Hunter, he had no resistance in this fight, I think he got old overnight after the Hunter fight, did extremely to get the KO the first time, but he was dependent on a great set up, execution, and a mistake from Whyte, Whyte dominated him before the KO the first time, he picked up where he left off, and it was the easiest fight he'd had in 3 years. I think Whyte expected the first fight to be harder than it was until the KO, was this time, was confident it would be easy, he tried to knock Povetkin out in round 1, wasn't as cautious as he was the first time, but he was more cautious in rounds 2 and 3, his jab was even better than the first time, it was a harder and more accurate jab this time, he put Povetkin on the back foot, the right to the body did damage, he was patient with the right hand after the first round, and when the opening was there, he took it, the right hand was more accurate than in past fights, Whyte hurt Povetkin with the right hand in round 3, didn't get reckless, and in round 4, the shot that did the most damage was a clean right hand down the centre, he didn't load up, he just threw the shot to the chin, with the right technique, and the positioning on the left hook follow up was great from Whyte, he put Povetkin down heavily. Whyte doesn't have the natural power in the right hand that he has in the left hook, but he still does damage with the right. Whyte's fundamentals were definitely better in this fight than before, Knight was a good addition to his team.
