Very close rematch, though Norton scored a little more solidly in a slight majority of the rounds.
Ali was in much better shape than in their first encounter, which allowed him to move more and limit Norton’s ability to even attempt to land. Crucially, however, many of Ali’s jabs in this mode fell short or flicked with a partially open glove. There was a tendency amongst Ali’s legions to believe that whenever he danced against Norton he was in complete control and that wasn’t quite the case.
Ali had a terrific final round, almost turning back the clock to his youth. I didn’t see it as quite enough, though did act as an assurance that Norton would not have had the same successes against the prime ‘60’s Ali that he did with the slowed ‘70’s version.
