who are the best heavyweights in history?

Re: best heavyweights in history

In no particular order, but I think Louis was the best.

Joe Louis
Muhammad Ali
Rocky Marciano
Lennox Lewis
George Foreman
Vitali Klitschko
Mike Tyson
Riddick Bowe
Larry Holmes
Evander Holyfield

Re: best heavyweights in history

Liston and Frazier deserve spots over Bowe and Klitschko.

Perversely, the greatest heavyweights in history do have to be judged on a ‘pound for pound’ basis of comparison though. Smokin’ Joe would be too small for Vitali in a head to head but, relative to weight, he was the better and more accomplished fighter. His decision over Ali was probably one of the 5 best performances in the division’s history. Stylistically, he was made for Foreman, which I think unfairly detracts from his overall status.

Re: best heavyweights in history

In a head to head sense or legacy/accomplishment? If the former, it is unfair in my opinion to compare guys like Jack Johnson, Sam Langford, even Joe Louis to guys like Lennox Lewis and the Klitschkos in a head to head sense, so that would affect my answer. Boxing and boxers have changed significantly over the years.

Re: best heavyweights in history

To be honest, I'm biased, my grandfather was a big Joe Louis fan, but still, the amount of title defences Louis had, incredible, he was dominant, I believe Burt Randolph Sugar said ot was Louis first followed by Ali, so some of what I say is based off that.

Re: best heavyweights in history

Louis is without a doubt one of the most accomplished Heavyweights if not the most accomplished, I can see an argument for him to be the #1 but I personally would argue for Ali. Sugar was a good historical resource but he had his own blindspots and biases. His top 100 book he published in 1988 has a lot of problems. Many boxers are massively disrespected in his ranking.

Re: best heavyweights in history

My top 8, not a set order, though I believe Ali to far and away be the best one(based on resume and who I believe hold up to test of time in terms of head to head)

Muhammad Ali
George Foreman
Evander Holyfield
Vitali Klitschko
Lennox Lewis
Tyson Fury
Larry Holmes
Riddick Bowe

Re: best heavyweights in history

Both you and Champ have Bowe listed, what do you guys make of Golata beating him soundly before he went off the rails? That and the lack of depth in his resume puts him out of my top 10

Re: best heavyweights in history

I think Golata was a very under rated fighter, and caught Bowe at the right time, with him looking at bigger fights with Lennox, and he even said it himself, “how do you train for a bum?” Any fighter can get caught when he had that mentality. He’s in my top, more on the “who do I think could beat who” portion of my list. Tyson had a weak resume, too, and was also in that era when the division was thinned out. 2 wins over Holyfield, maybe could argue he should have had 3. Effectively retiring at 28, he never got to face the Lewis, Tyson, etc, but I believe he would have beat both. Was such a well rounded fighter, great size and reach, and when motivated, could impose himself. But, I can see why you wouldn’t have him rated as him though based on the lack of resume.

Re: best heavyweights in history

I can understand the overlooking him narrative if Bowe wasn't getting beat up and on the road to being stopped in the rematch. Golata is one of the best Heavyweights to never win a title, but it is important to remember Lewis fought Golata and absolutely blew Golata out. To me, it isn't a coincidence Bowe dropped the title instead of facing Lewis as a mandatory and didn't come out of retirement after seeing Lewis tool the guy who beat him up twice but couldn't finish the job. He was a really good boxer in my opinion and would have been competitive, but for me, he doesn't have the "it" factor.

Re: best heavyweights in history

Head to head:
1. Muhammad Ali
2. Lennox Lewis
3. Larry Holmes
4. Vitali Klitschko
5. George Foreman
6. Wladimir Klitschko
7. Evander Holyfield
8. Mike Tyson
9. Joe Louis
10. Joe Frazier
I don't rate boxers that have no footage or are still active in these kinds of lists because I don't think it is fair, but the best of the current active champions could be in the top ten. Heavyweight isn't a very strong division historically, only the 70's and 90's were really spectacular.

Re: best heavyweights in history

I see prime Tyson getting Wladimir out of there pretty quickly.

Re: best heavyweights in history

I think Tyson has a chance versus Wlad to get him out early with effective pressure but if he doesn't do that he gets stopped in my opinion. Wlad is huge compared to Tyson, good at tying smaller guys up on the inside, and unless Tyson did damage early Wlad's jab and straight right would keep Tyson at range and do massive damage. Neither guy faced anyone near the level of each other in their respective primes though, so I wouldn't argue either way with a lot of certainty.
