More:

Amir Khan goes to Lamont Peterson's hometown for the first defense of his unified titles and gets jobbed by ref Joe Cooper, who deducts two critical points for pushing, including in the final round. The point deductions proved the difference between a unanimous decision win and a split decision loss.

rorschach's picture

Well let's see what's up.

rorschach's picture

So far 1 minute and 10 seconds into the 4th round the ref has warned Khan twice for not pushing. So the argument that he took points from Khan without warning is looking pretty flimsy.

I remember scoring this a draw, meaning without the point deductions I'd have had Khan the victor.
Still, Peterson performed very well. Good fight!

albertocastany's picture

He did deserve to lost points for pushing. Lamont Peterson kept doing a good job throughout the bout to get inside and fight Khan in close range. Khan's pushing would allow him to gain an advantageous distance.

Still, I think Khan won despite the deductions.

albertocastany's picture

Peterson using drugs during their first fight is just speculative. No clear evidence on whether he might have used stereoids before the fight.

All I can say Peterson fought smart and complicated things for Khan's style. Still it wasn't enough in my opinion

albertocastany's picture

The evidence (use of synth testosterone pellets if I recall well) is regarding the scheduled rematch Peterson had with Khan, which was called off. No hard proof of doping for their fight on 2011-12-11.

Champion97's picture

In my opinion, Khan did enough to win this fight, by only one point, it was a very close fight, the judges scored the fight fairly and properly, I do think the point deductions were harsh, especially the first, but I think due to the amount of times Khan did it instinctively, a punishment was just, but the referee should have officially warned him first, I think a fighter has the right to know exactly what the boundaries are, there is nothing wrong with fighting a little bit dirty to try to make the fight work for you as a fighter, Bernard Hopkins, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Miguel Cotto, not malicious, DIRTY fighters who will commit serious fouls, but instead manage to slip over limit, use illegal tactics, very minor, but still illegal tactics as part of their game plan, if a fighter is caught, warned, and they continue to fight this way, they deserve to lose a point, but Khan was guilty of pushing, with one arm, this is not the kind of foul which merits the decrease of a point unless the fighter is warned that they will lose a point, and they should know at what point the referee will take action. I didn't think the knockdown in the first round was a legitimate knockdown, it happens, referee's have one chance to see whether or not it was a knockdown, they have a split second to decide whether or not it was a knockdown, but it is disappointing. I don't think the referee in this fight did a great job, but I guess both fighters got a raw deal. I wonder if the referee took a point from Khan because he doubted the 'knockdown' he counted for, and he wished he hadn't counted, so he took an opportunity to even it up, unlikely I think, but not something I would put past a referee.

EndOfMe1994's picture

A very close fight and a fair decision IMO. For basically the whole fight, Khan out-landed and out-worked Peterson, but Peterson landed the more hurtful & effective punches. A lot of the rounds were tough to score, particularly 6 & 9.

Peterson's slip in the 1st round was the correct call. Peterson's right foot came out from beneath him and he lost his balance.

The 1st round knockdown was 50-50. Khan landed several shots prior, but also used his arm to push down on Peterson's head which is entirely what sent Peterson to the canvas. Khan was, IMHO, the beneficiary of a very ticky-tacky call here.

The point deductions were fair. Khan both pushed Peterson, pushed down on Peterson's head and was warned plenty of times for doing both throughout the fight.
