Re: Joe Louis vs Billy Conn Scorecard by Addi_Bomaye
R1- Conn is moving well aside from the moment where he slips to the canvas. Despite parrying some of Conn’s jabs, Louis is not landing enough with his or anything else to outshine the jabs scored by Conn.

R2- They both throw a left hook and Louis’ is able to land with considerably more impact. He then uses the same hand to set up a right and trap Conn on the ropes. For most of the round’s remainder, Louis is able to trap Conn and dig mean hooks to both sides of his body. Conn can only resort to tying up, rather than trying to trade with the bigger, far stronger champion. Good round for Louis.

R3- They both trade left hooks early, and Louis is the one who gets the better of this moment once again. Despite taking a few body shots and uppercuts on the inside, Conn blitzes Louis with a right hand then follows up with a left hook. The hand speed seems to be a problem for Louis, even with Conn taking so long to utilize it. Close round, but I felt Conn’s late momentum seized it for him.

R4- Conn is doing well leading with the left hook, whether it is to catch Louis on the way in or to set up the right hand, which also lands with good success. From a mix of his check hook, footwork, and clinching, Conn is doing good at preventing Louis from getting set up. A left hook lands at the bell for Louis, who is unable to do really much else in the round.

R5- Conn does good at controlling the distance and parrying Louis’ shots early, but Louis is able to build rhythm after landing a right late. When Louis is unloading, Conn is unable to evade and tries to hold after taking a series of power shots to the head. With Conn nearly doubling over, Louis starts to target the body and shoot uppercuts.

R6- All the rounds have limited footage, but this one is extra limited. All that is shown is Conn retreating, then Louis landing an uppercut to the body in another shot. Louis wins the round by default.

R7- Conn is catching more shots from Louis on the shoulders at this rate and is even pushing him back at times, rather than being a sitting duck in the clinch. The left hook of Louis does not miss on all attempts, but Conn’s is certainly more accurate between the two.

R8- Rather than going in and out, Conn is getting in the pocket, stepping out to score with rapid left hooks and right hands, then getting back in. Despite being at an obvious size disadvantage and not being regarded as a puncher, Conn manages to buckle Louis with a flush left hook at the bell. The hook lands before Louis can land his own. Good round for the challenger.

R9- Louis is clearly feeling overwhelmed, as he forces more clinches due to Conn’s well-balanced attack to the body and head.

R10- Despite taking the fight to Louis in the past several rounds, Conn has now elected to jab and move. Late, Conn returns to guiding Louis back and scoring with left hooks to the head and body.

R11- Conn is profusely barraging the body of Louis with his hooks. When he decides to bring it upstairs (at least for the first time on film), he catches Louis clean with a double left hook. Louis looks dissatisfied at the bell, while Conn raises his hand.

R12- Conn is still bossing the fight with his hand speed, creative angles, and persistent volume. Late, Conn lets go of a four punch combination, wobbling Louis with the final left hook. Louis does his best to hold, as his legs clearly are not steady. Conn does score with a few shots before the round is up, but Louis recovers and survives.

Re: Joe Louis vs Billy Conn Scorecard by Addi_Bomaye
R13- The left hook of Conn has been a prominent weapon in the fight and a couple of more score early. However, Louis finds him with a straight right and an uppercut soon after. Louis then starts to put punches together, snapping back Conn’s head with his right uppercut. Showing heart, Conn starts to slug it out with Louis, quickly overwhelming him with his ferocity and volume. With Conn walking straight in at times, Louis takes advantage of it finally by catching him coming in with a short cross, wobbling him. Conn tries to hold, but Louis starts to follow up, snapping his head back with a right uppercut. Another one clearly buzzes Conn. Louis then is able to pick shots off before causing Conn to sink to the canvas from a short right. After having had arguably his best round yet and stealing the entire second half of the fight, Conn’s tremendous momentum gets put to an end by Louis emphatically. Definitely one of the best fights ever of the black and white eras. Conn was en route to his career-defining win and boxed beautifully by mixing up his attack impressively, beating Louis to the punch often, dictating the pace, being the ring general often, and even hurting the champion more than once. Louis looked good early and cannot be discredited for exploiting a tactical error on Conn’s behalf in order to get the stoppage. While their rematch may have been a dissapointing dud, this one is forever one for the history books.
