Prediction: Russell UD

Champion97's picture

Prediction.

Timing favours Magsayo heavily, he's young, Russell is old, he hasn't taken much damage, seems to live the life, but he'll have started to decline, and making 126 will be tougher, Russell hasn't fought in 2 years, it's the longest layoff of his career, Magsayo has had 3 fights since Russell's last fight, his last fight was a good learning fight, he was behind, took a lot of punishment, not only got through adversity and won, but made statement with a great KO, and against a good opponent. The momentum is with Magsayo, he might have a mental edge, but Russell has the extra experience, is still the far faster fighter, has the better footwork, is defensively better, and can out box Magsayo for the duration of a round, but Russell can be countered, is a target for the right hand, Magsayo's timing is great, he can set up a potential KO well enough to be a threat to Russell's defence. I don't think Magsayo has the footwork to apply educated pressure against Russell, Russell can move comfortably on the defensive, and Magsayo is reliant on Russell taking risks, but the question is if Russell can use his speed and footwork to land without getting countered. Magsayo still has a lot to prove, he has shown a lot of flaws, the Ceja win could be partly down to Ceja's vulnerability, and apart from that fight, I don't think he's been particularly impressive.

I think Russell will get off first, but Magsayo won't be deterred by his speed, won't back up, and Russell will hold back with the left hand, he will be wary of Magsayo's right hand, but Russell will get his jab off fairly easily. I don't think Russell will be under any pressure when he's on the defensive, but when he's briefly on the attack, he will be countered, will have to respect Magsayo's power, which will put him under pressure, make him react defensively and make him miss some openings. I think Magsayo will do damage when he lands clean with the counter right hand, but he won't be able to capitalise, and Russell will be more confident as he adapts to the threat of Magsayo's right hand, will adjust his angle as he comes in, will throw 2 and 3 shot combinations and make adjustments with his feet, and Magsayo will take so long to reset, that he'll he neutralised.

I think Russell wins a UD, I think it will be competitive, the age and activity factors give Magsayo a better shot, I wouldn't be surprised if he won, but I think Russell's speed and overall skills are enough to win.

Gary Russell to win by referee stoppage in round 10

Jarod Killian's picture

People of the Philippines sleep soundly tonight knowing they now have a new boxing star that could be their next heir apparent. We'll see....

beaunuitmem's picture

Didn't score it but a 34 year old Gary Russell was a gnat's old boy away from beating him with just his left hand. They've got more chance of one of their 5ft ballers getting to the NBA than they have of Magsayo being the heir apparent.

Jarod Killian's picture

yeah but who else do they have given their current talent pool? All Rivera? Nonito is retiring soon. Almostgrouper really not impressed I thought Rigo beat him. Ancajas is also on his way out. So I really don't see many other choices.

beaunuitmem's picture

Agree, I don't think there is one but if we're talking about best Filipino under 30, Joe Noynay (thought he would have beaten Ogawa had it not been stopped)?
I need to score the Russell fight because it looked like Magsayo was getting beaten up by a one-armed man to me and a past-it Ceja was schooling him till he found that punch.

Beaten up by Russell?

LOL

Magsayo was far from impressive but all Russell had was the occasional flicking, pulled left hand with nothing behind it. He wasn't close to beating Magsayo up and there's no way as PBC a-side they would've robbed him if he legitimately beat Magsayo up.

beaunuitmem's picture

I didn't score it so hard to say too much but there were times during the middle rounds I thought Russell might get the stoppage. I was genuinely embarrassed for Magsayo and I was surprised at the result for the reasons you mention. I'd probably back a one-armed Russell in a rematch.

Absolutely nowhere near ever getting a stoppage. Magsayo never hurt let alone down from those flicking powerless left hands that GR threw a couple times a round. Are you Gary Russell lol?

beaunuitmem's picture

Agree, didn't think he was hurt but he was getting popped at will and I could see him walking into one. Was always a close fight because Russell gave up the first 2 rounds, I haven't seen the scorecards but I think it's a safe bet Magsayo was 2-0 up on all cards and that also means Russell didn't lose on any of the judges cards while he only had one arm. The judges were a lot more on the ball than the commentary team. Shocking production from PBC as usual.

beaunuitmem's picture

Didn't watch the fight but seems like Noynay paid homage to Andy Ruiz and put a few too many shrimps on the barbie. Missed weight by 9 pounds in a 130 pound contest and got stopped in the second round.

Jarod Killian's picture

Now Andy Ruiz is a whole other level of monster he is notorious for being quite the regular at the Golden Corral location over in Yuma AZ. Both Andy and team have been spotted there numerous time and well his reputation for eating is no joke. He’s definitely been eating well good before and after being HW champ

beaunuitmem's picture

I had to look up Golden Corral and who wouldn't want 'all you can eat' pumpkin pie, don't blame him.
In all seriousness, I watched an interview with someone who was in camp with him (think it was Jonathan Rice but might be wrong on that) and they were saying that Ruiz was in shape when he left for Saudi and he just got a bit kebab happy in Saudi. Not sure I believe that but made me laugh thinking Ruiz loved the grub so much, he just couldn't stop himself.

Champion97's picture

Russell's inactivity cost him, his timing and judgement of distance weren't there in the first 2 rounds, he came on as the rounds went on, but he definitely had an injury on his right side, and Magsayo's tactics were poor, he didn't know whether to pressure Russell or hold back and be the counter puncher, he didn't try to cut off Russell's pivot, and he was less varied in the second half without Russell being an easy target for 1 particular shot. I agreed with the the Showtime commentary about Magsayo's tactics, he didn't do a good job of implementing his game plan for 12 rounds, and he almost cost himself the fight.
