Roman Gonzalez TKO7

Champion97's picture

Prediction.

Israel is 23, but he's not inexperienced, he was bad against Ancajas, but he did great against Yafai, beat Ishida, he's definitely improved, Roman impressed against Yafai, he seemed done after the Rungvasai rematch, he's old at 33, but not shot. Roman's last fight was 2 months after Isreal's, but Roman fought once in 2018 and 19, Isreal has been more active in recent years, and Isreal is big at 115, Roman is small, but Roman is an HOF fighter, 4 weight champion. Roman is a come forward fighter, doesn't have fast hands, but apart from that, he has every offensive attribute, his head movement isn't great in terms of slipping shots, but he positions himself not to get hit on the inside, is a small target, and makes adjustments with his feet, he doesn't have the best overall technique, but he is very effective, the way he switches from head to and body and goes through the gears, is brilliant. Israel's style could give Gonzalez problems, he has speed in hand and foot, good lateral movement, fundamentals, and he can fight on the inside and attack the body, he is likely to have a longer reach than any other of Roman's opponents, so it will be interesting to see how Roman deals with that.

I think Israel will start faster than Roman, foot speed will be the main difference, Israel will land the jab and right hand, but Roman won't be frustrated, will make Israel work, and will have cut off the ring and been able to attack the body by round 4, I think Israel will still move around the ring and out work Roman on the outside for the duration of rounds 3-5, but Roman will land the harder shots, punch through the guard whenever Israel is static on the ropes. I think Roman will come on as the rounds go on, Israel's movement will slow down, he won't be able to hurt Roman even if Roman walks into a shot, and Roman will fight his fight. I think Israel will have success on the inside, it will be a fairly competitive fight in rounds 6-9, but not close, the more volume, variety, accuracy, damage, will all come from Roman, and he'll do well to make any of the rounds close without getting back on his bike and landing shots from the outside. I think Roman will tire in the last few rounds, his output will dip, there will be less power on his shots, and Israel will be able to get some distance, be slightly more mobile, but Roman will still do more damage with accurate body shots, will be more varied, and Israel won't have it in the tank to dominate the last few rounds, will still take punishment. I think the last few rounds will be competitive and close.

I think Roman is a level above, age, size, activity are all factors, and Israel is good enough that he shouldn't be written off, but based on his last fight, I think Roman wins a clear UD, probably wide, I'd be surprised if Israel won.

MINIMaxBOXING's picture

Pretty spot on, bro!

Champion97's picture

We both called Estrada's stoppage.

Did Chocolatito look a little slower?

Gold's picture

Yes but he's not slow, he threw over 1200 punches in Mexico city. Gonzalez was throwing with no power quickly so it wasn't really a good representation of his speed vs. Chocolatito's

Gold's picture

Should say for the (Super) WBA or Chocolatito's (Super) WBA title rather than the vacant WBA

Champion97's picture
Champion97's picture

Great performance from Roman, Isreal is a decent fighter, and Roman won that by a landslide, I didn't expect him to have that high an output in the late rounds, I don't think his age is a factor in terms of the 12 rounds, I think he's slower on account of his age, but he's never been the fastest, and it's never been exploited, I wonder if there was a problem with Gonzalez in the Rungvasai rematch, the first fight was very close, he looked shot in the rematch, and he's looked hardly past his best in his last 2 fights.

Israel started well, his foot speed was the difference, he was able to out work Roman, he beat him to the punch when Roman tried to attack, but Roman did a great job of cutting off the ring, Israel couldn't hurt him, it didn't take long for Roman to start to slow Israel's legs down by attacking the body, whenever Israel landed hard shots, it didn't stop Roman's pressure, Israel was only briefly able to use his size and strength, he started some of the rounds well by landing before Roman had a chance to get in range, but he was never able to sustain it, Roman had taken a toll by round 6, Israel couldn't stop him walking him down and letting his hands go, and Roman was too active and varied for him to defend. Roman slowed down slightly in the late rounds, and Israel tried to rally, but Roman's output was still too high, and he was still doing too much damage to the body for Israel to finish strong.

Hopefully Roman vs Estrada II happens next year.
