Re: Nino Benvenuti vs Sandro Mazzinghi II Scorecard by magic man
Always heard Mazzinghi felt robbed to favor the landing of the prettier Benvenuti in USA. Ok, that was a taste based fight with many close rounds that could go both sides: someone can prefer Mazzinghi aggression, someone can prefer Benvenuti accuracy. Anyway to me it's near impossible to score the fight for Mazzinghi (and I'm from Tuscany like him).

Being from Italy, what do you know about Duilio Loi? I've read some stuff about him but there is limited film on the internet, at least stuff that is easily available.

Alas here too there is no much stuff about Loi: you've to consider that even the match Benvenuti vs Mazzinghi has been transfered from film to tv only some week ago when the Tuscan fighter is dead. So alas, probably the films of the fights between Loi and Ortiz or Perkins are still on film in the shelves of Rai (national Italian broadcastship company). Loi was from Italian North-Eastern border (Carnera and Benvenuti too)and was good to fight both at short than at long range: hise best weapon was the left to the body. He is considered with Benvenuti the best Italian fighter of Post-war era: many old-timers historians considered best Italian of all-time Anacleto Locatelli, but alas the disposable foorage is even lesser.

Thanks for the reply and the information. Hopefully, they will make the Loi film available at some point if they haven't been lost to time. Both would be very interesting to see for those who are interested in boxing history. That's interesting about Locatelli, I hadn't heard of him and will have to look into his career.

Cleto Locatelli was a light of the '30...He had an awful end of career but he has beatne hall of famers as Fritzie Zivic, Jack Kid Berg (twice) and fighters like Izzy Giannazzo, Benny Bass (twice), Frankie Klick, Bep Van Klaveren and other European fighters of the era. He's famous for his two losses vs Canzoneri, that were considered two robberies, specially the rematch that was initially ruled as a draw.

I've heard of Canzoneri of course but I don't think I've seen that mentioned about him before, must have been some fighter to fight at that level. It's unfortunate that he never got a title shot but as I'm sure you know it was very political and dirty. Did you accumulate this information over time following boxing in Italy? Or are there books/forums where you've found the information?

I've read of him in books written by Italian historians like Giuseppe Signori, Roberto Fazi, Umberto Branchini (Hall of Fame manager): all of them ranked Locatelli as the best Italian fighter of all time. The same Vittorio Parisi, still alive, orchestra director and only Italian in TBRB. No much on the internet, alas.

There are only two footage on tube of Locatelli, alas, one before and one after prime. Alas there is no a biography of him, while there is of great Italian fighter of the '30 like Orlandi and Spoldi.
There is a beautiful biography too on Mazzinghi (Anche i pugili piangono), but i don't think it's translated in English.

Do you know if any of the ones you mentioned by Giuseppe Signori, Roberto Fazi, or Umberto Branchini have English translations?

I think they're hardly available in Italian too: they're books decades old. Only Parisi is easily available on kindle, bit i think only in Italian.

If you're interested, i've found a pdf with an all time Italian list by historian Roberto Fazi: it's very very old timers oriented, and that's exactly why it's interesting: you can find boxers you never heard of.

Re: Nino Benvenuti vs Sandro Mazzinghi II Scorecard by magic man
I agree, I was looking forward to seeing the fight to discover if Mazzinghi was robbed but now I know that Benvenuti deserved the victory. There were many close rounds in the middle part of the fight, but Nino started very well and finished even better in the championship round. Hate to admit that since I prefer the Sandro's aggressive style, but no robbery was committed.
