Fight Notes:

WBO titlist Wladimir Klitschko gives Ray Mercer the worst beating of his career as he campaigns for a shot at Heavyweight Champion Lennox Lewis. Klitschko becomes just the second man to floor Mercer after two left hooks in the closing seconds of the opening round and the first to stop him when Referee Randy Neumann waves the bout off as the punishment continues into round six.

Klitschko bludgeons the shit out of Mercer.

Wladimir Klitschko should have gotten the stoppage sooner shows how tough Ray Mercer is.

In this fight Wladimir Klitschko even landed throwaway jabs.

dizzy's picture

This was a good fight for Wlad to showcase his toolset. Mercer, even in his prime, was often a victim of the lack of in-ring intelligence and smarter head and upper-body movement, he was a rough, resilient brawler that mostly tried to tough through the fights (if that makes sense), this style allowed him to beat or at the very least give a tough competitive fight to a handful of more talented fighters, but its no wonder he was sometimes outsmarted and outmaneuvered by on-paper lesser opponents. In this fight he was turned into a practicing target, Wlad was way too powerful and technically equipped for Mercer to handle the onslaught, by the sixth round his face was badly swollen, Wlad gave him no space to come close and turn the fight into a back-and-forth brawl, a few single jabs was the best Mercer accomplished in this fight. Wladimir didn't face much of a challenge but he looked tremendous against opponent Lennox Lewis had tough time with (even if there was a 6-year gap between those fights), he was the first man to stop Mercer, he showed Mercer that he was no "Russian Tommy Morrison".

Late to the party. Great showing by Wlad, he really made a statement and threw such accurate, deadly powerful punches. He switched to boxing rather than fighting later in his career, but this is evidence he could really bang when he let his fists fly.

Good effort by Mercer, he was all heart and proved yet again he has great durability. Unfortunately for him Wlad was out of range and threw such perfect punches. Mercer got a taste of his medicine for his brutal knockout of Tommy Morrison, in which he should have stopped punching much sooner, same with Cooney against Ken Norton.
