Fight Notes:

After losing a controversial split decision to Glen Johnson in the winter, Antonio Tarver gets revenge in the rematch for the lineal Light Heavyweight Championship. Tarver tries to knock Johnson out over the first half of the fight, but Johnson withstands his bombs and mounts a courageous rally in the late rounds as Tarver fades. With enough rounds in the bank, Tarver fights tactically in the twelfth to win a competitive unanimous decision and once again become champion.

Comments

Tarver could turn up the heat on Johnson when he wanted too.

rorschach's picture

Johnson is such a good guy, and a pretty darn good fighter.

rorschach's picture

It's too bad he didn't get famous until he was on the verge of decline.

rorschach's picture

At least me made some good money and was the undisputed LHW champion of the world.

rorschach's picture

Not many fighters can say that, and he did it all while still holding a full-time construction workers job.

rd 1,7,9 close i felt
rd 1 nothing of significance lands rd 7 Tarver gets through wit a couple good lefts in the final 10 secs or so to seal it, rd 9 pretty close throughout with neither man willing to give a lot up in exchanges and as in rd 8 Johnson tries his best to follow his trainer's advice to punch with Tarver in little combos finishing most of em wit thudding body shots and not let Tarver unload get a few through and turn him like the earlier rds and Johnson when not doing this was also timing Tarver well in between his attacks, Johnson may have had more these type exchanges where he finished stronger but to me Tarver won his wit better margin wih the quality of his landed head blows and with the rd on the table Tarver landed a real sharp left before bolting out..Johnson followed him with an even harder right as i believe thats what Merchant called but only thing was i didnt think it landed cuz while i was a looking for either fighter to make a case by landing something significant down the stretch and to steal it like Tarver attempted with that landed left i knew the other fighter would come right back and just as i was looking for Johnson to cut distance..he did with that missing right which i felt Tarver pulled away from...just about Tarver tries to catch him coming in with a left and just like Mayweather in the DLH fight Johnson comes in with a even faster than anticipated rush and with his head at an angle that prevents that Tarver punch from landing flush so couldnt score it that same way and Johnson lands his left hook to the body once again making that rd close but in a rd of such close margins as i saw it i preferred the quality of Tarver's lefts to Johnson's body shots down the stretch of the rd
rd 11 Tarver gives up a good lead in second half of rd
