Re: What fights are we missing?

Hi. So, I've noticed that Boxrec has started doing scores;I don't think its any "threat" to this site, since they have no feedback, interaction or community element to it, and likely they will in time find themselves constantly invaded by patriots and fanboys messing up the averages. What they do have though, is all the fights. Which you are never going to have if you keep adding them individually, and will inevitably loose some peoplle for that single reason. Have you considered looking into some kind of spidering type deal where all the fights from boxrec are added automatically? Cheers

Re: What fights are we missing?

Yes we have thought about that, in fact I was thinking that would be a good way to populate our database when I first built the site. However, boxrec's Terms of Service explicitly say that is not allowed. So we can't do that.

I do have a way to upload spreadsheets of fights, which could get us a bit farther faster, but I'd need to find that fan that has hundreds and hundreds of fights saved on his computer, in spreadsheets. Not impossible, but a challenge. I've also considered opening up adding fights to anyone, but some of the long term guys on here aren't super keen on that. So as of today, we don't have great plan to address the problem you bring up, and it is a problem.

I will also add that we do need more users to keep this place going, and boxrec adding scores isn't going to help that at all. If you can spread the word and get some of those guys over there to come here instead, that would be great.

Re: What fights are we missing?

As of now there isn't a big competing community on BoxRec. For 90% of the fights I've scored there, I was the only who had submitted a scorecard.

Re: What fights are we missing?

If they don't have the interactivity we have, perhaps we can survive and still grow. A long time back when we conceived of this site, at one point we were going in a direction where we were going to re-create boxrec, but we decided to consciously make something different from that site. It will be interesting to see what they do with the feature in the coming months (that is, if they build on it at all, or just leave it be.)

Re: What fights are we missing?

Ah, that makes sense - have to do it the hard way then.
The spreadsheet method sounds doable. If a person was to volunteer to do , lets say, a particular year in spreadsheet form at their own pace, it would probably take a while, but when its done its done forever.
I'd be willing to test out how much work is involved in something like that, if you could show me the format you'd need. I already have spreadsheets with every fight I score, so it wouldn't be too different to what I'm already doing.

Re: What fights are we missing?

That would be a great test actually, if you're willing. I will dig up the format and send you a sample. If it works.. that could be great.

Yeah, it's unfortunate we can't scrape boxrec. They are very protective of their data - which is fair.

Re: What fights are we missing?

@ magic man who did you have winning that first fight?...fair result or rightfully speculated as mob controlled? what you think

Re: What fights are we missing?

I honestly believe Basilio won the fight by pretty large margin. I gave him 11 round out of 15; some rounds were close, but even giving all of them to Saxton, I still would have Basilio comfortably ahead. He dominated the first 5 rounds and pushed the action all night long; maybe sometimes he threw his blows too much from afar and lacked some precision, because Saxton adapted and gave good account of himself speaking about defence, but the challenger's offensive outcome was very mediocre. He put some steam in his punches only between 11th and 13th round, but then Basilio came back winning the championship rounds. Sad robbery in my point of view.
