Fight Notes:

WBA, IBF and WBO Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko defends his crown against Tony Thompson for the second time in four years and gets rid of the challenger earlier than their first encounter. A straight right hand freezes Thompson at the end of the fifth before he collapses into the corner. Although Thompson beats the count, he never fully recovers and goes down again from a combination at the end of the sixth, collapsing on his side. Thompson gets up once more, but Referee Sam Williams stops the fight anyway.

Comments

Wladimir Klitschko should get more credit for his many title defenses over good competition.

Tony Thompson is the same man that defeated David Price twice another Big Man.

Wladimir Klitschko dispatched Tony Thompson twice very easily.

Wladimir Klitschko has much more skill than most people can understand even many Boxing Folks miss noticed his ability.

dizzy's picture

This honestly felt like a pointless title fight, even Klitschko himself admitted he would've rather fought someone he had never fought before. I've always thought of Thompson as an underrated boxer, he was a capable heavyweight gatekeeper in his day, but Thompson hadn't done enough to earn himself a second Klitschko showdown and was appointed the mandatory challenger via Chambers' forfeit. Rematches in boxing at the highest level usually happen for a good reason - that being an inconclusive outcome of the previous encounter, avenging an upset loss, or there simply is no one else to fight - and I guess this was the third case, given that the Klitschkos had cleaned out the division by that point. The fight itself was not as one sided as you'd think, Wladimir still somewhat struggled with Thompson's awkward style, Thompson's punches have always been anything but textbook, but he successfully avoided most of Thompson's traps and was winning the battle of the leading foot, which proved to be crucial during the knockdown sequence - when Wladimir threw a left hand, Thompson did not have Wlad's left in his vision and therefore could not properly see it coming, and was barely rolling with it - as a result, Wlad successfully directed Thompson's full attention to his left hand, so when he immediately followed up with the straight right, Thompson wasn't prepared for it. Thompson was seriously hurt there, he was trying desperately to bait some time to recover but Wlad didn't give him any, he bullied him down to the canvas in the next round, and the ref made the right decision to wave it off.
