More:

In his first defense of the IBF Heavyweight title, Chris Byrd is fortunate to escape with a highly controversial unanimous decision over Fres Oquendo. With "Fast Fres" content to make "Rapid Fire" Byrd come to him, the champion plays the unfamiliar role of aggressor but clearly loses the fight in the eyes of many observers.

Champion97's picture

Very interesting fight indeed, I think both fighters performed very well indeed, I think Oquendo deserved to win this fight, I think Byrd expected a boxer who would fight coming forward in a straight line and walk into his punches, but Oquendo was very awkward for him, he moved around the ring well and his head movement was magnificent, Byrd seemed far from relaxed at the end of many rounds, he knew he had underestimated his confident and probably underrated opponent, I think this fight did not have a fair decision to end it, I gave Oquendo that could have gone the other way, but 117-111 is not a scorecard I think is justifiable, and to be completely honest, there was only one individual round I thought Byrd won decisively, but a few his opponent won decisively, I honestly feel that to have Byrd even just 2 points up, you have to give him all the close rounds, and to give all the close rounds the other way you have a very wide card for Oquendo. I thought the first four rounds were decisive, but the middle four were subjective, it was interesting to see their success clash, I thought both guys moved very well, and defended very well, but I think they could have been more controlled in the process of loading up, I noticed them both over reaching, and I think this drained them both, I suppose it didn't matter as the fact they both did this means they cancel each other out, I thought they were both guilty of dirty tactics, I thought Byrd landed a couple of unnoticed low blows, but at the same time, Oquendo was rough when there was no need to be, he thought manhandling Byrd would being a good way of setting up opportunities, but all it really achieved in the end was wasted time, I actually thought Oquendo scored a couple of knockdowns, he defiantly hurt Byrd in the last round.

One of the things I found so interesting about this fight was the difficulty any judge must have telling if some of those punches landed clean, Byrd seemed to twitch his head a lot, making his hair bounce, creating the illusion that he was being hit clean, but really his opponent was falling short with punches, this wasn't this case in all situations, but some, I thought the jab of Byrd was more successful than that of his opponent, but in my opinion, he was not accurate enough with the combinations he threw, he made Oquendo miss often as well, but there were also times when he needed to put his foot on the gas and he was not producing the work rate.

This was a good fight, but I going to go ahead and say it, I thought it was a robbery, it might sound harsh to Byrd, but that is my honest opinion.

I wonder what Oquendo had to do to win this fight, if what he did apparently wasn't enough. Was KO the only possible way.

A little bit closer than I remember seeing it back in 2003, still Fres should've gone home as the new IBF heavyweight champion.
