This was Duran-Barkley Pac-man style. It didn’t take a great welterweight to defeat Keith Thurman, who was perhaps a little overrated even prior to his injury induced hiatus. It did, however, take a bonafide boxing legend to pull this off when the victory belonged to a 40 year old veteran who reigned as a teenage world FLYWEIGHT champion 21 YEARS AGO! The circumstances under which Pacquiao claimed this win cannot be understated.

A minority opinion, but it’s highly questionable whether Pacquiao actually earned a 10-8 margin in the opening round. Thurman clearly outscored him, if not heavily, and would have undeniably earned a 10-9 edge himself in the absence of the knockdown, which was not particularly heavy, Manny clipping Thurman whilst backing up. I’m uncomfortable with the view that that microcosm of action alone warranted a 3 point swing in that round, which is what supporters of a 10-8 score for Manny are endorsing.

Pacquiao’s punches carried significantly more snap than Thurman’s through the first half of the fight and, consequently, were significantly more damaging. Indeed, it was not until the older man started to slow down in the 6th round that the defending champion, whose punches all too often appeared ‘pushed’, began to get a real foothold on the fight, his youthful energy gradually clawing back the advantages laid by Pacquiao’s savvy, thoughtfully applied, veteran explosiveness. Thurman swept the 6th thru 9th.

And then came the 10th round bodyshot from the legend, drudged up from the depths of hell, stalling Thurman’s comeback and cementing the legacy enhancing victory for the diminutive legend. Though he recovered well enough to win the penultimate stanza, any chance Thurman had of retaining his title effectively ended in that round, at that precise moment. It was the sort of success, after such an extensive career, that only the true greats of the sport are able to muster. Manny Pacquiao is that.
