Thanks, what did you think of Paulie vs. Lobov?
Sun, 2019-06-23 09:08
The card was okay overall, but that was the least entertaining. Paulie did what I thought he would. Had he thrown his right over the top, or an uppercut at all, they were there all night. He was never going to get a close decision against a guy who they believe is there for long haul. I could see it 3-2 either way(had it 3-2 Paulie).

I didn't watch any of the other fights, but I had heard similar sentiments. I was looking forward to seeing Randall Bailey so it's a shame that fight got cancelled. He only threw that one right hand in the second and he said he broke it right? Paulie left it on the table himself in the fifth in my opinion, as you said trying to point Lobov in a close fight was a bad strategy. I never thought Paulie was a good representative for boxing so watching him talk a big game and then lose was very entertaining for me. Seems like people were divided on who they wanted to win in the fight though.
What did you think about Acosta vs. Soto and the Cancio vs. Machado fights?
Sun, 2019-06-23 09:27
Soto started well, started to fade, but caught him with the big one in the end to rock him. Thought it was premature stoppage, but I think Acosta would have gotten beaten up after that, so it is what it is. I thought Machado would be better prepared this fight, and know not to in fight with him again, and use his size advantage to keep it at distance, but he fell into Cancio’s fight again, and got beat up. Him moving up will help with his weight issues, but don’t know if I’d favor him against any top 10 Lightweight. Cancio should look for a fight with Farmer. Don’t think he’d win, but would be his best payday opportunity.

I thought similarly that even though it was premature Acosta was probably going to get stopped. I felt Soto may do better than people thought because I knew he had a legitimate amateur background (fought in the WSB and at the Mexican national level) but I didn't expect him to be able to fight toe to toe with Acosta the way he did. A rematch would be a good option for Acosta and Soto, it was certainly an entertaining fight. I was surprised how poorly Machado did as well but I suppose it follows the general trend of fighters losing the immediate rematch and Machado looked out of it from the beginning. I don't really know what the options are for Machado at Lightweight either, surely Golden Boy doesn't want to put Garcia against him this early. To be honest, I think Machado may have been more flash than substance in retrospect and I don't think he will do well at Lightweight either where his size advantage will be lessened. Farmer vs. Cancio would be good, I'd like to see Farmer fight someone with a pulse. It seems like it will be Rene Alvarado next for Cancio though which isn't bad. The Jojo Diaz rematch would interest me as well.

Acosta said before the fight, 'not overlooking Soto, but', that suggests to me that he wasn't fully focused on the fight, you can't blame him, it looked like an easy one for him, but it just shows you how dangerous practically any challenger can be, and how easy it is to underestimate an opponent.
Talking to both Salt and Gold (tired of all the arguments and bad blood).

Yeah, they wanted to line him up versus Felix Alvarado in a unification if I remember correctly (and have Rene Alvarado face Machado/Cancio on the same card), but now that is up in smoke. It was hard to find information on Soto but Acosta likely knew about Soto's background, and if he didn't he found out in the first few rounds. Soto is with Zanfer so if they don't do a rematch it would be interesting to see where he fights. Maybe Golden Boy had options on him and they'll use him like they did Acosta.

I think the problem is the business side more than anything else, promotion and fighters being inevitably asked about big potential fights makes it hard for them to focus on that one opponent, so that makes sense, Acosta talking about Alvarado, other big fights, when he should have been solely focused on Soto. I gave Joshua a lot of credit for being a champion who is good at mot overlooking challengers, but if he did underestimate Ruiz, as a lot people of people think, then that disproves what I thought before the fight, but that might not have been the problem for him against Ruiz.

Probably, but that's also a part of the game at the top level. The best can manage the distractions and still perform. I didn't necessarily think Acosta underperformed in this fight personally but I haven't seen a lot of his fights. I think it was more than Soto was underestimated and Acosta was well matched.

I haven't seen this fight, I saw him against Alejo, on the Cotto vs Ali undercard, but I haven't seen him fight apart from that, can't say he is a bad fighter, so it is a huge upset. I expect there will be a rematch, as we just saw with Machado, as we saw with Price Against Thompson, the immediate rematch is not always the answer, but I think Acosta should take it, that is, if he wasn't weight drained.
