Outstanding featherweight championship bout, in the midst of a narrow era which saw the WBC title regularly change hands between a series of evenly matched fighters over the course of a few years.

Kelley boxed a perfect, near flawless third round but, for a number of reasons, was unable to sustain that level of technical dominance. His mini Saad-Muhammad-esque mentality, the wear of a number of really brutal fights already endured in his career, combined with the intelligent and unrelenting pressure of a very talented young challenger, ensured that Gonzalez held the upper hand through most of the first 7 rounds, even while swallowing numerous hard left hands from the defending champion.

In the eigth session, Kelley appeared to have finally broken through enough to save his title. Yet the battering Gonzalez put forth in the 10th, enough to warrant a 10-8 round even in the absense of another knockdown, put an end to The Flushing Flash’s brave last, and suprisingly brief, stand as champion.

Good write up! I didn’t score 10 10-8 like you did, but it is justifiable. Only 1 of the 3 judges did but it is a fair enough call.
