Prediction,

Sometimes a battle of the unbeatens, at this level, is a 50/50 fight, like Groves vs DeGale, but sometimes although fights are promoted as 50/50, even in battles of the unbeatens, it is far from a 50/50 fight, like Catterall vs Stalker, and I think this is more like that.

As amateurs, both fought internationally, both won medals, neither were bad amateurs at all, but Fowler had more amateur fights, was in the 2016 Olympics, fought in more tournaments.

Both fighters are undefeated, Fitzgerald has had a few more fights, done more rounds, but in terms of who has won better, been more dominant, there has been no comparison, Fowler's whole career so far has been easy, couple of dodgy looking finishes, hasn't looked spectacular throughout, but he has never had problems, been very impressive in his last few fights, seems to have improved a lot in the last 1-2 years. Fitzgerald is unbeaten, no SDs, but he has been down, not against a puncher, and in the fight before his last, he fought an opponent he shouldn't have struggled against, I don't know what the official scorecards were, but a lot of people had him losing that fight, and although he got a last round stoppage, it was a controversial finish.

I'm very impressed by Fowler, I think he is one of the best prospects in the UK, he is unproven, untested really, has a lot to prove, but I think he will be a world champion, he can't look past Fitzgerald though, because that's always a mistake in boxing. Fitzgerald is an unbeaten fighter in his own right, he should not be written off, but I think he is in against a much better fighter in this fight, and I think he will be well beaten.

I don't think this will be a complete mismatch from the start, if the personal stuff is a factor, and the tactics get thrown out the window, that's bad for Fowler, but I think by round 5, the body work from Fowler will be taking it's toll, Fowler will start to bully Fitzgerald, he will break him down, round by round, and maybe in round 8 or 9, he will stop him.

What a clutch knockdown!

Champion97's picture

This was a very close fight, very good one, big swing in momentum, close after 8, nothing in it, Fowler had Fitzgerald in trouble in round 9, but he punched himself out, Fitzgerald recovered, and put him down in the last round. I think Fitzgerald let Fowler off the hook in the last round, almost cost him the fight, but getting your opponent out of there when it is late in the fight, when you've been on the receiving end yourself is easier said than done. Fowler seemed drained, he is very big for 154, if he was, he should move up, but I think he underestimated Fitzgerald, could have done better. Fitzgerald is better than people thought, but Fowler might not be as good as he looked in previous fights.
