More:

IBF welterweight champion, Errol Spence Jr (24-0), makes the 3rd defence of his title, defends the belt in his home state, takes on 4 weight world champion, Mikey Garcia (39-0). Both fighters are highly ranked, but Mikey Garcia, a heavy underdog, the former featherweight champion, a much smaller fighter than Spence. Garcia moves from lightweight to welterweight, dares to be great.

The fight starts off tentatively, Spence throws a lot more punches, throws the jab early, but Mikey defends well, lands some counter punches. Spence seems to settle down a lot better than Garcia, as he does all the work in rounds 3 and 4, uses his reach, and Mike struggles to get his shots off.

Spence is clearly the stronger and more aggressive fighter in the mid rounds, as expected, and he also continues to make good use of his reach, and Garcia is unable to out box him, unable to find the range to land decent punches often.

Garcia keeps trying to find a way to turn it around in the late rounds, but Spence continues to be on the front foot, sustains his work rate, and Garcia can't rally.

Spence boxes a technically brilliant 12 rounds, as well as bullying the smaller fighter.

Garcia loses a one sided fight, but despite the size disadvantage, is the first fighter to take Spence the full 12.

Spence wins a shutout on all 3 cards, even gets an extra point for a very one sided round, beats Garcia by UD.

Prediction,

Spence was the slightly better amateur, might have the best win between them with the Brook victory, but Garcia is a 4-weight world champion, he has had 39 fights, he is an absolute veteran, he's had 7 world title fights, so he is more experienced overall.

Garcia has never taken a sustained beating, been down once or twice like most fighters are, but he's fresh for his age, he has had a lot of fights, but he has not been in any very damaging fights, and the most bother we've seen him in was when his nose was smashed by a head clash. Garcia is consistent in the gym, is always there, training camps are gruelling, but less so when the fighter starts camp in shape. 31 isn't necessarily old in this era, and I think age, for Garcia, isn't an issue yet. I doubt there's an age factor in this fight, because neither fighter is old, neither fighter is inexperienced, but Mikey has an experience edge.

The reason why this one isn't the fight everyone wants to see, is the size aspect. Garcia is 5'6, has a reach of 68, was a world champion at 126, made 130 at 26, is strong, agile, hits hard at 135, has fought at 140 a few times, and since his long layoff, out of the 5 fights he's had, his best performances have been his 2 fights at 135, because at 140, Garcia is still agile, strong, but less so than at 135. Spence is 5'9, has a reach of 72, has fought at light middle a lot in his career, has even had one fight at middle, is a big welter, I don't think Spence could get below 145, and he has mentioned moving up before, going up to fight Canelo, as Garcia is doing against him now. At some point in 2012, and 2013, Mikey was fighting at feather, and Spence was fighting at light middle.

I think this will be a great fight, it will go the distance, but Garcia will win, it will be very close, but Mikey will win. I think Spence is great, and I would not be at all surprised if he won, he has a big size advantage, but it is very easy to underestimate an opponent, I think Garcia's career, legacy, depends on this fight, I think he knows none of his performances since he came back from his layoff have been him at his 100% best, and he wants to prove to the world that he is a special fighter, he has been through a lot, trained in tough conditions.

At 147, Spence is strong, dangerous, has great stamina, but Mikey, at 147, can't carry his power up, he won't be a non-puncher, but the natural power he has, will be badly compromised, he will carry unnatural weight, which doesn't give you power, and he will be hitting a naturally bigger opponent than he's ever hit before. I think in terms of strength and stamina, Mikey will do great at 147, because of how well he's done the weight, people will be surprised, but he won't hit anywhere as hard as he did at 135.

Mikey has been out for 8 months, not too much time out, probably the perfect amount, given that he has done 12 rounds 3 times in a row. Spence comes off 9 months out, not much longer than Garcia, but he didn't get taken into round 2, he hasn't been inactive, beat Brook in 17, fought twice in 18, looked great against Peterson, went 7 rounds, but 9 months might be slightly too long, and it will be 14 months between going past 1 round, which is not great.

I think Mikey will start well, Spence isn't the fastest starter, and Mikey is a great fundamental boxer, might the be the best basic boxer in the world.

I think Spence, early, will struggle with Garcia's ability to blast the 1, 2 through the guard, without even the first shot getting fully blocked.

I think Garcia will win the jab battle (that will be interesting because of Spence's reach advantage), and will out box Spence, use feints well, set Spence up and counter him, he'll just be one step ahead for the most part in the early rounds.

I think in the mid rounds, Spence will really impose his strength on Garcia, walk him down, will be frustrated, but he'll walk through Garcia's power.

When they are on the inside, I think Spence will attack the body, and that will sap a lot out of Garcia, but Spence will keep taking more than he is landing in exchanges.

I think after 8 rounds, Garcia will start to tire, and at that point, Spence will really come on strong, hurt Garcia, might drop him, but Garcia will be prepared to survive by being smart and killing time, or more likely gritting it out and fighting his way out of trouble.

Mikey will still have some power, and if Spence has him hurt, is trying to go for the finish, Garcia can recover quickly, and if Spence gets reckless, walks into one, Garcia can hurt him with a clean counter, but I don't think Mikey will be able to do anywhere near as much damage as Spence because he is too small.

I think Garcia beats Spence by SD, 112-115, 113-114, 115-112.

Mikey should be commended for taking this fight, the pressure is not on him to win, he is not expected to, probably 90% think he will lose, but he has to be respected, win or lose.

The pressure is on Spence, he can't overlook Mikey, size advantage or not, he's fighting a more experienced fighter who is not old, not declining yet, who will have a great game plan, and a fighter who has seen something in his work in the ring which is sloppy, he's seen a weakness, and Spence can't know what Garcia has seen, what he plans on exploiting, so Spence has to be adaptable. Spence should get immense credit if he wins this, because that would be a great win, size advantage or not, because a fighter who is not great, doesn't beat Garcia unless his size advantage is much more than this.

So I came to check the thread and noticed you deleted all my comments!? Why?
Anyways, it was a total mismatch and complete domination from Spence like I'd predicted, Mikey was in survival mode the entire fight so the only credit I give him is the chin and endurance he has.

So competitive for Mikey. Your bubu almost won girl, yayyy

I love Garcia. Spence is far from perfect and this could be a lot closer than people are expecting. But he's is too willing to brawl and walk through fire to be a good pick against a bigger boxer who is probably one of the best P4P in terms of one shot power. Mikey takes some early rounds but takes damage in the middle rounds and slows down late. Spence UD

albertocastany's picture

Mikey looked bloated. He started to counter Spence like it was expected, but he looked too heavy for his frame. During the course of the fight it looked like he struggled, not with Spence, but with his own weight.

petieroach's picture

I thought size played less of a factor in this fight than I expected, Spence was just the superior boxer in every facet. Spence upped himself to top 3 p4p with this performance for me - I see almost all big time fights for him from here on out.

Mikey should go back down to atleast super lightweight and build himself back up again. This was a brutal loss. Would be amazing if he somehow took ivan baranchyk's spot in the SuperSeries though.

albertocastany's picture

I wouldn't say Spence was a superior boxer. I'd say it was more about mikey having a disadvantage. During the first half of the fight, you could see Mikey was pulling some nice counters on Spence, but his movement was very compromised.

petieroach's picture

Does Mikey usually get that baffled by southpaws? I haven't seen enough of his fights prior to this and I also thought he had a tough time with that factor

And I think the reach and size disadvantage played a part in this fight to a point but Spence simply outboxed him clearly

I think you're giving Spence too little credit here. He was going up to high in weight, but Spence still fought a brilliant fight.

He used his reach perfectly, and used his footwork to make Mikey miss constantly. Not to mention he knew how and when to apply pressure. Even then he was very defensively proficient.

It's like I said from the start, Mikey didn't have the speed to beat Spence, or the power and his boxing IQ didn't measure up to much here either.

He had some trouble at 140 too, so maybe he needs to stick to where he belongs naturally at 135.

He's never had very sharp defense, and when fighting heavier opponents it's too dangerous.

At least at 135, it's people about his size or smaller.

I give him full credit for having the guts to take this fight but it was a stupid move.

albertocastany's picture

Merit where is due. Spence improved his jab. But it still looked like it was more about not growing into a welterweight properly by Mikey.

Champion97's picture

I don't think he is giving Spence too much credit, because he boxed a better fight than any of us thought he would.

Maybe it was a little bit stupid, but boxers are crazy people, they don't always think logically, they take risks, and Mikey believed he could win, he took the chance, he tried his best, no shame in being beaten by the better fighter.

Don't lump everyone of us together. Some of us expected Spence to dominate this fight. I thought Mikey would win an early round or two at best. What I am most surprised about is that Mikey survived the full 12 rounds. He must have an iron chin.

Gold's picture

I agree, I think a lot of people tricked themselves into thinking Mikey was going to win when the factors on paper pointed to Spence.

No excuses, Mikey didn't have them so why would you. He couldn't do anything against Spence other than survive for 12 rounds, he didn't even win 1 and his brother was about to throw in the towel.

Champion97's picture

Great performance from Errol Spence Jr!
Mikey Garcia did himself proud, he showed a lot of heart, and he has balls to move up to 147 to fight Spence in the first place, but he got out classed and beaten up, because he was in against the much bigger and probably better fighter. What surprised me in this fight was the technical ability from Spence, he controlled range brilliantly, and when Mikey landed a clean shot, Spence was able to roll with the shot to take sting off it, he is a great technical fighter.

Spence vs Crawford has to happen, they both need it, but promotional issues might get in the way, hopefully, the fight will happen this year or next, and if it does, that's one of the, if not the biggest fight in boxing.

Mikey might retire, he is a 4-weight world champion, he is not improving, he has nothing to prove, but he might not want to go out on a loss, he shouldn't stay at 147, making 135 is a big ask, but he could make 140, there are potential fights there for him, only problem with that is, Hooker is with Top Rank, and Prograis, Taylor, are in the WBSS.

I predicted a close Spence win but certainly not the shut out that we witnessed. What I didn't anticipate is just how disciplined Spence would be in the first half of the first, happy to keep it long, keep Mikey at the end of his jab and frustrate him. He forced Mikey to take risks that he didn't want to take if he remotely wanted to have a chance. I think that's why Mikey was so inactive, he knew that he'd get hit hard if he came into range.

I thought both fighters came out with credit. Spence showed his skills and how well he can judge distance. Mikey got dominated almost every second of every round but showed incredible heart to hear the bell. As for gold saying it was a survival mission, my interpretation of that is that it was a survival mission from perhaps round 9 onwards. He had no chance of winning at that point.

On my last prediction before the fight I talked about what point Mikey would feel Spence's power and if early, may put him in a bit of a shell. I think that did happen early.

On another note, I realise boxing is subjective but I'm absolutely shocked that anyone could give Mikey a round other than the 2nd, which was the only one that you could say was competitive.

I predicted that it was gonna be a mismatch and it certainly was. Mikey didn’t do anything other than survive for 12 rounds. I give him credit for taking the fight but at the same time he didn’t perform like some people thought he would. It was clear that he didn’t deserve to be in a ring with Spence, I hope he moves back to 135 because at 140 is gonna be very hard for him to beat the likes of Pograis, Taylor, Baranchyk, etc

Champion97's picture

No, 140 is more realistic, he put on 6-8 lbs of muscle, it will be very hard for him to get down to 135. Don't exaggerate just because you don't like Mikey. Mikey can beat anyone at 140, the problem is, Top Rank, and the WBSS, his best hope is if Baranchyk leaves the tournament.

Dude who said I didn’t like Mikey! You seriously must have a crush on him. Be realistic, you first said Mikey was gonna beat Spence, then considered Spence better than Canelo and moreover you deleted al the thread because it made you look dumb. Have some decency and know how to interact wth others who have other opinions and points of view. All I said
was how I think the fight was gonna be a mismatch and you bashed me for it. I was clearly right so accept it

Champion97's picture

'You seriously must have a crush on him', then it's 'have some decency and know how to interact with others', hypocritical, derogatory.

'Good, competitive fight for 6-7 rounds, but it's a mismatch', that's a contradiction, 'I would not be surprised if he got stopped mid, but my prediction is he wins', is not a contradiction, again, hypocrite.

So Mikey runs from a chinny super featherweight Gamboa but has the guts to fight Spence? Seems unlikely, Mikey quit vs Salido?, well he didn't quit against Spence, he didn't quit against Saldio, he got his nose broke, the doctor advised his brother to stop the fight, so he did, you moron.

You deleted them because you are a punk and sore loser who knows nothing about boxing and cannot stand other's opinions. Who do you think you are? I know you have a crush on Mikey and that is okay but do not twist shit and make false accusations to make your point valid. Get off Mikey's dick you stupid clown

Champion97's picture

Dumbass is what you are Miss 6 round competitive mismatch. I'm smart enough not to bet money, I lost nothing, the money you won, you will spend on spa weekend with the girls.

Yea with your mom and her pink cuchi baby ;)

SalTnutZ1's picture

Spence was a heavy favorite, so depending on what you invested, couldn't have been that much in terms of ROI. A lot of people had Spence winning, myself included, but I can point to quite a few that believed it would be a very close Spence decision win, and even plenty who thought Mikey could win. He deleted partially, as I've asked everyone, as another pertinent member to calm the flame wars down, as they aren't productive to build the base of the site. So taking all the shit talk down before the fight wiped the slate clean for new members who were coming for the first time to score it. Champ knows his shit, so not reason to flip. And, you can't be a sore loser just because a prediction is wrong, so that's just silly AF.

Champ, calm down, and don't sweat it. You had the right and weren't that far out of the mainstream to pick Mikey, so acted as if you were a fool to think he could win close is dumb. Don't freak, and let it all be. You put picks out for every big fight, so easy to criticize when someone is wrong, and ignore the right picks. I picked Broner over Pac. Don't think that means I don't know boxing, just thought timing and certain circumstances gave him a chance. Don't sweat fools, bud

Champion97's picture

Thanks man, I am not myself at the moment, you're a better man than me, I shouldn't stoop to his level, but I'm doing the wrong thing, being every bit as stupid and childish as he is.

SalTnutZ1's picture

Not a better man, just one who's been in a similar spot, and am now an old fart with some perspective to share, that's all.

The ROI closed at 3-1 so yes it was even better than Mayweather against McGregor if you know anything about investing. Easy money for people who know boxing and specially the likes of Spence and Garcia. I don't have to defend myself because I don't give a fuck about you or what other think, all I said in my original post that i thought the fight was a mismatch and that Mikey had 10%-20% chances against the bigger, stronger, better boxer in Spence. That Mikey hadn't beating anyone like Spence and well the dude lost it defending his boy, he then deleted the threads idk why really.

SalTnutZ1's picture

-275-400 on Spence heads up, so unless you bet on him to win a decision, or parlayed, I doubt that. I do know boxing, and trust, I do pretty well, hitting on about 75% overall on my bets just to start the year...He didn't delete because of you, as I said. It was getting to be a shit show for no reason, as I've pointed out before as a fellow moderator/contributor, and have encouraged the deletion of such things when they get carried away, as it doesn't help the site of people get along. You keep trolling now, not merely restating that you were correct. Calm down man, and let it go bud.

The line opened around -500 but on the week of the fight it went down substantially. I took him at -335, -315 and at -300. If you says you do betting you then understand what being a shark is, right. I do boxing as well so good for you.

SalTnutZ1's picture

How much did you bet on each, what were the conditions(straight up win or picked an outcome), and what outlet. I still doubt you made 3-1. Either way, you do know the line dropped because so called smart money came in at the end on Mikey, right? I made money on it all too, but quite a few experts thought it close pre-fight

Champion97's picture

Thing is man, he knows he's wrong, he's angry at me, and he's trying to take advantage of my faulty prediction, he knows he's wrong.

Always strikes a nerve when people bring mothers into it, I said something about his after, I had the decency to delete the one I wrote, but for some reason, if someone says something your mother, it makes you want to knock them out.

You disrespected me first so you got it. So try to be now a tough guy talking about knocking down someone, yea yea..

Champion97's picture

You disrespected me first. Did I threaten to knock you down?, I said, when you bring someone's mother into it, that's below the belt, makes me want to knock you out, I don't need make myself sound tough over the Internet pal. I deleted the comment about your mother, and all the trash comments I put in, so you should do the same.

How am I gonna delete the comments when you're the one who can do that.

The lines I am giving you are straight up bets, I did not pick any prop bets and yes I am telling you I got that return, I bet over 10k and got roughly 3k gains. In those types of fights is not the smart money who jump last minute is the fanbase that get crazy and put money on the underdog. If you are a bettor like you say you are you can recall that on the Floy with Mcgregor fight the line opened at -1000 and close down at -400 when sane people knew that Floy wasn't losing that fight.

Dream on sweetie. You always pick the losers haha

Mikey by SD haha what a dumbass my goodness

Champion97's picture

7 round, good, competitive mismatch, what a dumbass.

Picking any winners this week?

Champion97's picture

I suppose Leonard, Duran, Pacquiao are dumbasses as well are they? No shame in getting a bold prediction wrong

Its called business, and most of those people got paid to balance things out and make a bigger show of what in reality was
