A spirited effort from DeLaHoya profuced a genuinely close fight over the first 7 rounds. Mayweather, perhaps carrying a little too much weight for that stage of his career, did appear somewhat sluggish at times,at least by his own standards.
However, Oscar just could not match Floyd’s considered punch placement, masterful at times, and overall command of the ring, particularly down the stretch. There was a gulf in innate ring intelligence between the pair. As Mayweather stated before the fight, DeLaHoya does not possess any ‘special effects’.
The official that tabbed DeLaHoya the winner was clearly enamoured by his star power, which still surpassed Mayweather’s at that time quite considerably. That being said, there were still enough competitive rounds here to suggest that things might have been different had this been a prime DeLaHoya in the ring.
