Far from a legitimate loss for Lomachenko, and not just because my card favoured him at the close of 12 rounds.

In addition to entering the bout with a significant weight advantage, the legality of which is open to debate, Salido proceeded to hammer away at, or just below, Lomachenko’s beltline every few seconds for almost the full 12 round duration. This quickly made the Ukrainian star hesitant and jittery, appearing under duress, and stifling his own output by resorting to excessive holding in an almost desperate effort to stymie his much larger opponent’s constant infractions.

Quite disgustingly, Harold Lederman of the HBO broadcasting team, called out Lomachenko’s holding before anyone had even taken note of the reasons why he took such action in the ring. It should have been swiftly acknowledged as a secondary infringement, entirely reactive to the blatant fouls committed by Salido. Astonishingly, these fouls were not even discussed until the 8th or 9th round, after they had began in earnest much, much earlier in the fight.

Salido did expose some lingering amateurish tendencies in Lomachenko, but the latter did land the more consistently CLEAN scoring work. It was a very close fight, but to consider that Salido clearly won requires unfair crediting of so many of his blows delivered outside of the scoring range as legitimately scoring. That is unjust, and Lomachenko’s grandstand finish, when he almost took the grizzled veteran out (and arguably deserved a 10-8 round), should have been enough to edge the verdict.

All things being considered, it was a quite remarkable performance by a man with one professional fight under his belt, not least for the dignity he displayed in 'defeat'.
