Gonzalez was something like a 7 1/2 to 1 underdog in this fight, this was a really impressive win, his career best. Mares was supposed to win this fight. Coming into it Mares looked like he could be one of the next great Mexican fighters as an undefeated three weight champion, but his career has really stagnated since this bad loss.

He did struggle to bounce back straight away, but in recent fights, he has done well, made the Crux rematch close than the first fight, against a better Cruz as well.

It's comparative though, he was an undefeated three-weight world champion before and now he hasn't won a legitimate title since and struggled with the best opponent he beat in Cuellar. I don't see him winning another title, especially if he faces Davis.

No I don't, I wasn't disagreeing, just pointing out that, to be fair, Mares, against Cuellar, Gutierrez, Santa II, was better than between the Gonzales loss and those fights, but no, he isn't the fighter he was.

I think that's a fair assessment
