Okolie sucks, I never want to see him again. He is 6'5 with an 82 inch reach, can't jab to save his life and instead jumps in, holds and wrestles. If this fight wasn't in the UK on a Matchroom card he would be DQ'd, getting three point deductions is ridiculous.

Logan Paul vs. KSI was a better fight than this

Champion97's picture

Haha, he does not suck, I still think he has world level potential, he just had one very ugly, very underwhelming fight.

Gold's picture

Well, you can see why I think he sucks, no jab, bad movement, loops his shots, fights dirty and wrestles. The Chamberlain fight was extremely boring as well. He has so many fundamental issues I can't see him ever winning a world title let alone challenging for one unless he was handed a shot.

Champion97's picture

He doesn't have bad movement, and he does have a jab, but this fight was just ugly, just a bad performance. Chamberlain was too small, he was a kid in there, didn't want to be involved, but looks at Okolie's other fights, see how clean he knocks guys out, this is a guy who has learned very fast and is still learning, he is getting the experience he needs, when Okolie fights next, we will see if his jab, clean, straight punching impresses you, but definitely, his movement is good.

I can easily see why you aren't looking forward to seeing him fight again, that fight was not entertaining for the fight fans, it wasn't interesting for the purists, it was not a good fight, Eddie Hearn couldn't think of a positive thing to say. I understand why you don't think Okolie is good, we will see, he has a lot to prove, but I think he has world level potential.

I suppose there is no disputing, that was one dreadful fight, it was like watching paint dry.

I just call a duck a duck, Okolie is a 6'5 Cruiserweight with an 82 inch reach, yet he spent the entire fight jumping in, trying to clinch and wrestle Askin. In addition to not having a jab and bad movement, that's bad ring generalship. If I see a boxer with bad traits, no jab, bad movement, bad ring generalship, I'll call them bad. Askin was the best opponent he's faced by far on the biggest stage he's been on so far, so I think it is fair to judge him by this performance. Other than Watkins who is a British level fighter, everyone he's knocked out is a bum. Chamberlain is 6'2, not a bad height for a Cruiserweight, he's going to come across guys that size in his career. I'd be shocked if he became a good ring general who boxes on the outside and uses his natural advantages in one fight, so we'll see about that. One additional thing I will say is the majority of the blame for why this fight was bad goes on Okolie, so why did he fight that way? It's not that Askin was pushing him to fight this way, so does Okolie think he's a 6'5 infighter? Is he just bad and this is the way he thought he could win?

Champion97's picture

I get that.

That isn't what he was trying to do, I think the problem was, Askin wanted to get close, work on the inside, make it the sort of fight you don't get much preparation for in the amateurs, but when he had closed the gap, Askin, Okolie clinched to stop him working in close, and when he then tried to get that daylight back, get that distance, make it an outside fight, fire off straight shots, Askin didn't let him, he held on and tried to keep the fight on the inside, he didn't relent, but Okolie also didn't relent and let Askin fight the fight he wanted, so he kept clinching, and unfortunately, that was how the whole fight was, Okolie occasionally pivoted well used his feet to stay a distance away, but not often.

I think Okolie is learning, I think he already has good attributes, but is inconsistent, we'll see, but I rate Okolie, I still think he has world level potential, we'll see. Okolie didn't try to fight on the inside, he tried to fight on the outside, his opponent didn't let him, he didn't let his opponent work on the inside.

Let's not forget the shit ref, Loughlin stinks, he should have sorted out the fight

Gold's picture

Except Okolie was the one who was jumping in and trying to fight on the inside. You are right, Loughlin does stink, he should have DQ'd Okolie instead of giving a third deduction.

Champion97's picture

He was trying to push Askin back, get him backing up for a second, so he could fore off clean punches. He is to blame for what happened to Nick Blackwell in my opinion, 3 rounds too many of a brutal beating, a mismatch, jarring uppercuts.

Gold's picture

Yeah, it's like jab and grab without the jab, everyone hates that style.

SalTnutZ1's picture

It was pretty brutal.
