Though their final meeting in Manila generally gets more praise as a heavyweight classic, both Ali and Frazier were far superior here.

Their respective styles, and physical stature, meshed perfectly to produce a fantastic rhythm of combat, that failed to be marred by Ali’s penchant for holding Frazier’s head in close. Indeed, scoring the fight involves discerning between Ali’s sharpshooting at mid to long range and Frazier’s wicked hooks to head and body when he had worked his way in close.

Under the scoring system in place at the time, Frazier appeared to need the final round to retain his title on a drawn verdict. In that sense, the official cards were unkind to Ali, who probably regretted handing two rounds to the champion through inactivity. Modifying for the current ‘10 point must’ system however, Frazier just romped home with a deserved victory, virtue of his huge 11th round, and even bigger 15th. How Ali ever rose so quick after that titanic left hook is beyond me.
