Golovkin won this fight. A few ‘swing’ rounds certainly but not enough to ‘swing’ it for Alvarez, who nevertheless boxed a terrific fight.

Officially this was a victory for posture, body language and aesthetics. GGG looked old, boxed out of character but scored enough with his solid jab over the first 9 rounds to edge the majority of them, before opening up over the final 3 with power punches. Yet, that short, compact punch does not carry the same visual appeal as the wider, snappier power punches of the younger man. Particularly as most of Golovkin’s scoring punches landed on Alvarez’ forehead, split through a high guard. The compubox figures should never be treated as gospel, however they gave a solid indication here of who had the edge. Golovkin outlanded Canelo in 10 of the 12 rounds.

A real shame, because this was likely GGG’s last hurrah.
