Im surprised you guys are predicting that Callum Johnson is going to Knock Artur Beterbiev out... i dont see it
Johnson is a beast, so is Beterbiev but Artur hasn't fought someone like Callum as a pro is inactive and I don't feel will realize what he's walking in the ring with this Saturday. Callum knows exactly what Beterbiev is and jumped at the chance at a title when everyone else steered clear. I think he pulls the upset, though I wont consider it one as I think very highly of Johnson.
Also for @Champion97 or whoever runs this league,
Shields vs Hammer is off, Hammer is apparently sick and the docs wont even let her train heavy until March/May, so it must be something serious. Shields still is fighting November 17 though according to her against TBA.
Having trouble copying the list of fights over for some reason, the website keeps creating an error message, so I'll see if typing it out works.
WBC ordered a number of interesting fights. Wanted to see what everyone thought of the matchups.
GGG v Jermall Charlo
Thurman v Porter
G. Russell v Santa Cruz
Linares v Broner
Mikey Garcia v Luke Campbell
Anthony Dirrell v Avni Yildirim
Julian Williams v Lara
GGG v Charlo is an eliminator for Canelo
Dirrell v Yildirim is for the interim title
Russell v Santa Cruz a unification fight
Linares v Broner a title eliminator
Williams v Lara a title eliminator
Thurman v Porter both a unification and a rematch
Lots of good fights coming up.
Golovkin vs. Jermall Charlo - Don't think this one will happen, it's too high risk and low reward for Golovkin coming off of a war. I think he will sign with ESPN and fight Murata, Charlo will become the mandatory or will fight a lower level fighter to become the mandatory. This would be a great fight though, I think it is a 50/50. Golovkin is declining, has taken a lot of damage, Charlo is younger and fresher. Golovkin is more experienced, Charlo has a size and reach advantage. The jab battle would be worth the fight by itself, Charlo has a fantastic jab and obviously, Golovkin has one of the best in the sport if not the best. If I had to choose I'd pick Golovkin by very close decision.
Thurman vs. Porter - Great fight, this one will definitely happen sometime in 2019. I think Porter looked better and more complete than he ever has before versus Garcia. I guess it depends if this is the first fight back for Thurman and if he gets a tune up, how does he look? Thurman has been out forever, I would favor Porter by decision, their first fight was very close and Thurman's activity and injury are big negatives.
Russell vs. Santa Cruz - Really great fight, this one will definitely happen too in 2019. I'm not big on Gary Russell, I think he is more flash than substance, but either way this fight is going to have insane punch stats. I know Russell beat Santa Cruz in the amateurs but I'll take Santa Cruz by decision, he's more proven on a professional level and Russell has quite poor activity.
Linares vs. Broner - Don't think this one will happen, I can't see Oscar working with Uncle Al unless it involves Canelo. This would be a good fight, I would favor Broner though. Stylistically they are a counter to each other I suppose, Broner doesn't do well when he gets outworked and Linares doesn't do well versus guys that can exploit his defensive flaws. I'd favor Broner, he's a real 140 lbs fighter, I think he will be able to break down Linares and win by late KO.
Garcia vs. Campbell - This will happen eventually, maybe Campbell can be convinced to take a step aside though which would delay it. I don't really think Campbell has a chance to beat Garcia, Garcia is better in every way and that's not a knock on Campbell. Garcia by mid round KO.
Dirrell vs. Yildirim - Apparently this for the full title apparently because Benavidez tested positive for cocaine out of competition. Basically handing Dirrell the title, I think it is total bogus honestly. Yilidrim is not good at all, Direll by mid round KO.
Williams vs. Lara - I suspect this one won't happen, Lara is theoretically mandated a rematch versus Hurd, but I think Hurd was granted a voluntary defense coming off an injury. If the Hurd rematch falls through for Lara I definitely will take him to win, Williams is not the style of fighter that can give Lara a lot of trouble. Williams is going to get boxed, and it won't be pretty. Lara by decision.
What do you think?
There were a number of other mandated fights for title eliminators, including ones with Postol, Francisco Vargas, and others.
On this group, I agree with your assessment of the likelihood of the GGG-Charlo fight. I don't think it happens, as Canelo could just as easily vacate the WBC to avoid the situation, knowing another fight in Spring against GGG is the money fight for both, not Charlo. If it does happen, I wonder how Charlo would do against his first, real big step up. I know he beat Trout, but that wasn't prime Trout, and prime Trout, in my estimation, isn't as good as GGG is now, and Charlo won a fairly close decision in that fight. My money would be on GGG by comfortable margin, as I don't know that Charlo is really ready for prime time with the big boys at 160 yet.
Thurman v Porter is an interesting one. I know Thurman has all the negatives against him going in, but I can't help but feeling the time off to get healthy, getting married, and still being in shape and coming back in his prime years, that maybe he hasn't lost too much. I too think he will need 1 tuneup at least, but if he looks his old self in that fight, I'd have him a slight favorite, like 52-48.
I think Santa Cruz should be an easy winner in that fight.
Would be surprised if Broner-Linares happened, too. But, if they somehow make this an eliminator, I think it has a better chance, as both want another big payday.
I don't think that Mikey fight will be competitive even, if it happens at all, as Mikey really wants a bigger fight.
I think it may be for the full title, but with Benavidez being listed as champion in recess, he will have some claim on the title still, right?
Williams and Lara is a eliminator to fight Charlo, so I think this one is more likely, as I don't think Hurd will be ready for a Lara rematch until Spring at least, and if somehow Lara can win this, and somehow pull off a victory against Charlo, that rematch gets that much bigger and lucrative.
Really? I couldn't find those online, would you mind posting them?
Yep, and Canelo would drop the WBC if negotiations weren't favorable for them. He is larger than belts at this point. Golovkin and Canelo will make the most money facing each other but I wouldn't be surprised if there were sticking points in the negotiations. Will Golovkin fight in Las Vegas again? How much of a reduction in PPV split will he take? I agree with your assessment of Charlo and Trout, however, I think about the Jacobs fight and how Golovkin had issues with the size of Jacobs trying to box him. Jacobs is a more dynamic boxer for my money but Jermall has a better jab and straight right in my opinion. I can definitely see why you'd favor Golovkin to win on points though. If you don't believe Jermall Charlo is ready for Golovkin, how far would you go up in the rankings if you were trying to match him competitively?
I'm surprised Thurman's comeback fight hasn't been announced yet, I've seen quite a few things about Thurman being back in camp. It would make sense if they put him on the Wilder vs. Fury undercard like what has been rumored. I'm sure they wouldn't throw him back in versus Porter immediately unless he just wants to cash out.
I can see why you'd say Santa Cruz will win easily, he's definitely improved over his career which showed in the Frampton rematch, he has a lot more layers than he used to have. He is a borderline top 10 pound for pound boxer for me.
I think Broner would be more willing to take the fight than Linares, it just seems like it has more upside for him while if Linares waits he will probably get a shot at Ramirez anyways.
Would Mikey be willing to drop the title to do it though? It is possible they've moved on from Mikey vs. Spence and Mikey will try to make fight happen at Lightweight/Super Lightweight. There is a rumor, which that can't be stated enough, it's a total rumor, that Pacquiao has signed to PBC to fight Broner and then if he wins that to fight Mikey.
Everywhere I've seen says it is for the full title, champion in recess is just used to create a mandatory out of a champion that has been stripped for one reason or another. Thurman was made the champion in recess as well if I remember correctly.
I think beating Williams and Charlo is more viable for Lara than beating Hurd in a rematch honestly. From watching Jermell Charlo vs. Trout I think that is a winnable fight for Lara as long as he hasn't aged overnight, Jermell can be boxed. Yeah, it would be even more lucrative, and PBC will want to try to unify those three titles eventually.
At the office currently, so will try to find original posts, but I saw a few mentions on Boxing Scene, and those other fight notices were tweeted out by Michael Benson on Twitter, if you want to look him up and see the details he posted. He posts a lot, so may have to go back a bit, but it was all posted over the last few days.
In terms of Charlo, and who I'd like to see him fight, in order to better gauge where he's at, and to give himself some further seasoning, I think Murray is similar enough to Trout, but with more left in the tank, albeit slightly. And doing so would knock one more "titlist" out of the picture in the WBC. Otherwise, assuming Danny wins, that is the very fight I'd like to see him in first, since he was the one person(outside of Canelo) that gave GGG a tough fight. If he can get past Jacobs, or Derevyanchenko should he win, then I'd say both in terms of ability, resume, and seasoning, he'd be ready.
I hear Broner-Linares is an eliminator to fight Ramirez, so that may get both men to take the fight, given the stakes.
I guess that's right, and I was clunky in my wording. I guess I should have said he'd have an immediate claim as the number 1 contender, and would be first in line to attempt to recapture his title.
Agree on Lara, too. Those fights, to me, are more winnable than Hurd, or Munguia in terms of the other champions, given the stylistic matchups. That division should be very fun to watch over the next year or two.
Per same source, WBA also allowing Brain Castano to defend his regular WBA title against Lara, too. So seems like that may be an even easier route to a "strap" before his Hurd rematch. Hoping this one doesn't happen, because I had heard speculation that Munguia may try to target Castano and that belt next, too, to position himself closer to a unification with Hurd.
More announced matchups/fight orders per Michael Benson:
Joe Joyce targeting Gerald Washington for Wilder-Fury undercard.
Serio Martinez has a deal sent to JCC Jr, just waiting on him to sign the deal
Horn v Mundine at 156.5 catch weight
Andrew Selby v Julio Cesar Martinez Aguilar as a final eliminator for their flyweight champion, Cristofer Rosales.
Francisco Vargas v Eduardo Hernandez as a final eliminator for their super-featherweight champion, Miguel Berchelt.
Mohamed Mimoune v Viktor Postol as an eliminator.
There were a few more, but these are the most pertinent.
I kind of doubt Lara would take that fight, Castano is not a name at all, he'd be better off going the WBC route if that's what the WBA is offering him. Is it even allowed by other sanctioning bodies to "unify" a regular "title"? I don't believe it has ever happened before. I know the WBC uses the Diamond "title" to try to set up unifications, but they don't market that as a legitimate world championship title like the WBA does with the WBA Regular.
Joyce vs. Washington wouldn't be bad, obviously not as good as Joyce vs. Ortiz though. It'll be interesting to see if Washington can box him early on.
I absolutely do not want to see Sergio Martinez ever again, and I say that because I appreciate how good he was at his peak. This fight is a joke, no one can reasonably justify this fight as anything other than a pure money grab.
Horn vs. Mundine will actually be fun to see for what it is, Mundine is an old man but he's way bigger than Horn.
I've never seen the guy Selby is up against, but Selby beat Rosales easily not that long ago. I think it is still a legitimate question to ask how good Rosales is, was he just fortunate to fight a weight drained Higa?
I'd love to see a Vargas vs. Berchelt rematch, their first fight was a war.
I've never seen Minoune before, it should be interesting to see how much Postol has left in the tank.
There were some other interesting ones in my opinion, former WBO Bantamweight champion Tomoki Kameda is fighting in an eliminator for Rey Vargas's Super Bantamweight title against Abigail Medina. Former IBF Minimumweight champion Hirito Kyoguchi is fighting in an eliminator for Ken Shiro's Light Flyweight title against Jonathan Taconing. Plus there is the Oubaali vs. Warren issue I discussed in the other post.
Not sure how the WBA Regular would work in terms of a unification, I was just basing it off, as you said, how the WBC has used the Diamond at times. But, the guys who hold the Regular title, I'd assume, would get a shot at the World holder eventually. But, with either Lara, or Munguia, if they took that title, it would better position them toward a goal they both have, a fight with Hurd. Munguia already having a legit belt of his own, taking that "title" in a fight that should be a fairly easy win, should help move him closer to the fight he says he wants at 154. And with Lara, if he wants the easiest fight to wait for Hurd, that Castano fight would be it, and would also add a "title" to his name, too.
Yeah, I wish Joyce-Ortiz was happening, but at least he will be facing a live opponent, which I haven't seen him in against yet.
I don't want to see it either, but I keep hearing the talks of it. A complete money grab.
Berchelt, imo, is the best at 130, as I truly think he'd beat Tank, so I think that fight with Vargas, should he win, would be awesome. Their last fight was great, and both always come to fight.
https://www.ringtv.com/544960-ggg-jermall-charlo-among-fights-ordered-at... They outlined all of them here, I somehow missed it when I looked earlier. The Bantamweight situation seems weird, not really sure why they are implying the Warren vs. Oubaali fight wouldn't be able to be made. Seems strange to me.
Jacobs vs. Derevyanchenko winner vs. Charlo would be great, I'd love to see that. Murray I'm not so interested in, I personally think Charlo is above the level that Murray could gatekeep.
Theoretically yes, but given Top Rank and Golden Boy's relationship, I think Linares could be lined up as an opponent without taking a risky fight like that. I wouldn't be mad at Broner vs. Linares though.
Only reason I mentioned Murray, was as a tune-up fight, to eliminate the Silver titlist, this taking another hurdle for a title shot out of the picture, while also getting another fight with a guy who has been world level for awhile, something he doesn't have a lot of on his resume. Not saying I think Murray would have a shot, but he's a tough out generally. But yeah, Charlo-Jacobs is what I'd like to see, as I think the BJS-Andrade winner will avoid a unification at all costs, at least for a year or two, and those are the only two viable opponents. Murata-Charlo would be good, too, but I'd rather Murata-GGG, because that would be both entertaining, both decorated amateurs and great pros, and Japan draws like crazy in these big match ups.
