In a Super Fight, dominant, hard hitting Gennady Golovkin, and big money fighter, hard hitting, Saul Alvarez, battle it out in Las Vegas, after a couple of years of the fight being talked about, and seeming unlikely to happen. The fight is one of the most highly anticipated in the world, one of the most meaningful, significant fights out there. The fight is for Golovkin's WBA, WBC, and IBF middleweight world titles.

Golovkin is the aggressor in round 1, throws more, but Alvarez is mobile, defensive, and lands a couple of clean punches. Golovkin looks slow in round 2, and struggles to get going, pin Alvarez down, Alvarez moves, defends very well, lands a few good shots, does a good job of holding his authority in centre ring, and outboxes the champion.

Alvarez continues to move well in round 3, but Golovkin, forcing more pressure. Golovkin is busier, uses the jab, Alvarez, still defensive, still landing with accuracy, doing the good work for most of the round, but made to work. Golovkin jabs in round 4, uses defence of his own, and lands some power shots, Alvarez, tiring, made to miss, bullied.

Golovkin starts round 5 aggressively, but with no accuracy, but Alvarez, not responsive. Both fighters are defensively sound in round 5, but in the mid part, Golovkin lands good jabs and an uppercut. In the last minute, Alvarez stands by the ropes, and eggs on Golovkin to bring it, Golovkin is aggressive, Alvarez is defensive, Golovkin misses, Alvarez lands one or two, but throws little, and Golovkin manages to get through with a couple, one of them, the best punch of the fight thru 5, a great right hand to the back of the jaw. Both have success to start round 6, but through the round, Golovkin is the aggressor, much busier, finds little accuracy, but enough to outdo an inactive Alvarez, Alvarez does flurry back late in the round, not overtaking Golovkin for punch count, but landing cleaner.

Golovkin makes Alvarez work, miss, lands the jab, and power shots early in round 7. Through round 7, Golovkin drains Alvarez, commads the round with his jab, bullies and dominates Alvarez. Golovkin is on the front foot in round 8, lands when he gets Alvarez on the ropes. Golovkin lands a great right hand early in round 8, and peppers Alvarez with the jab. Alvarez is tired, and is made to miss, Golovkin finishes the round as the aggressor, Alvarez, defending, landing a couple of clean power shots, but inactive, and hit with the jab as the round closes.

Alvarez starts 9 aggressively, but he can't bully Golovkin. Golovkin becomes the aggressor, Canelo defends very well, but doesn't respond. Alvarez lands a good right hand, but doesn't hurt Golovkin. Golovkin has success as Alvarez is bullied to the ropes. Both are defensively brilliant, but the aggressor and the worker does better. Alvarez starts 10 like a steamtrain, lands a massive right hand flush, Golovkin, iron chinned, takes it well, and lands very hard jabs. Alvarez is struggling for pace, defends from power shots, but takes the jab. Alvarez is exhausted as the round finishes, trades power shots with Golovkin, Golovkin gets the best of it, and Alvarez, back on the defensive.

Golovkin is aggressive with the 1, 2 early in round 11. Golovkin lands the jab, they trade in the middle minute, Alvarez lands a great combination, Golovkin takes it. Golovkin is very aggressive in the last minute, he lands a lovely right hand to the ear, they exchange, Golovkin lands a good right uppercut, left hook. Golovkin walks into a combination from Alvarez to start 12, Alvarez lands power punches, but can't hurt Golovkin. They trade throughout round 12, Alvarez lands more, and better, but can't move Golovkin, and Golovkin makes him work very hard, but Alvarez finishes with a good round.

The general consensus is that Golovkin has done enough to win by 2, possibly 4 points, but both raise their gloves, and some have different opinions. The judges score a shocking 10-2 in Alvarez's favour, a 6-6 draw, and a 7-5 win for Golovkin, the last two, understandable, but the public, disgusted with Adalaide Byrd. The decision is a split draw.

Golovkin quotes,

'You know today, is really, a big Mexican day, congratulations to all my friends from Mexico'.
'He (Canelo) has good experience, just, I want a true fight, just like Mexican style, I have a Mexican style, I want a true fight, like, you know, close distance, and, just, I want big drama show, I didn't get it (big drama show) so much tonight'.
'I want to say thank you very much, to my Kazakhstan fans, who support me, and (salutes them in their native language)
(He thinks he won 7/8 rounds, thoughts?) 'You know, these people give me a draw, you know, my focus is on boxing, just, I think, just, my belts, I'm still champion Max, I've not lost'.
(You said there was no drama show, but you were the aggressor, his job was to box smart, isn't it your job to make sure it is a drama show?) 'No it's not my fault, I'm pressuring him in every round, I want a drama show, I want to give all my people, big present, so it's not my problem'.
'You know I'm very happy today, I just came back to Kazakhstan, to my country, and I want to say thanks to those who support me.'
(Rematch?) 'Of course, of course I want a rematch, I want a fight, rematch, or next fight, I want a fight, a true fight, I have my belts, just, I want a champion's fight'.
(He boxed well, he says you couldn't hurt him, close one, difference in rematch?) 'You know just, I have a couple of ideas, right now just, he moves too much, I just want a close fight, Mexican style'.

Canelo quotes,

(Did you feel the power of Golovkin?) 'No truthfully not, not like everyone spoke about, not what I thought, no it really didn't surprise me'.
'In the first rounds I just came out to see what he had, you know, then I started building, but I won 7/8 rounds easily'.
(It seemed that after 9 rounds, he had built a lead, and you needed to win the last 3) 'No, not all, it was to be convincing, in what I already had won, that's all'.
(Rematch?) 'Yes, of course, absolutely yes, if the people want it, yes, this was a draw, basically, he didn't win, this is a draw'.
(He thinks he won, and you didn't fight him enough to make it dramatic, thoughts?) 'I was there to fight, I was there, I did my fighting, and I always said, I was going to be a step in front of him'.

Can't wait for the first bell to ring! I wish Canelo's team hadn't stalled the fight just to have GGG get a bit older, but at least we didn't end up waiting too many years.Right now is hard to tell how this fight will finish, but we can tell how it will develop.
Jab will be the key in this fight. Canello will bank on GGG stalking him in order to get countering openings. However, GGG will keep him at distance with a solid Jab. Canelo has struggled a lot with range controlling Jabs and he hasn't shown any improvements. Even Chavez was able to keep him at distance from time to time with a weak Jab just to keep him away.
GGG has to remain at mid range with his jab and follow up with hard combinations in order to grind Canelo down. If GGG doesn't get the KO victory, he will most likely be robbed in a decision favoring the Cash Cow Canelo.

"If GGG doesn't get the KO victory, he will most likely be robbed in a decision favoring the Cash Cow Canelo."

Or Canelo could win a completely fair and clear decision.

Lefty,
Unfortunately history suggests different. There have been too many instances of Canelo fighting at las vegas with odd scorecards:

*vs Mayweather --- the infamous 114-114 card
*vs Lara --- the 117-111 card
*vs Cotto --- Although most people saw Canelo win, the cards were favoring him by a way too wide margin. This was highlighted even by people who think Canelo won.
*vs Kahn --- Canelo was leading in the scorecards!

I wish it wasn't a conspiracy theory like scenario, but evidence suggests Las Vegas unfairly favors Canelo and the money his fights produce for the city.

Unfortunately you were damn accurate

Unfortunately you were spot on

It's Time!!

albertocastany's picture

What? Canelo will fight wearing Winning Gloves? How is he planning to KO GGG wearing those?

rorschach's picture

Great Fight! Had GGG winning 7-5, I could see a draw. For me you'd have to be looking for rounds to give Canelo to give it the win.

rorschach's picture

A draw is fair but Bryd with 118-110 should never be allowed to score a fight again. She consistently has terrible scores like this awful terrible judge.

Gold's picture

Well unfortunately for Canelo it appears Oscar could only buy one card (118-110 lol). A draw is not out of the question I suppose and at least we will get more as that was a great fight

BIGLEFTHOOK's picture

fucking disgrace golovkin won that fight clearly!

Gold's picture

welcome to canelo judging

Wow thought GGG was the clear aggressor throughout most of the fight. I thought it was really a 3 part fight. The first 3 rounds which were in favor of Canelo (at least 2/3) and then the 4th-10th rds where it appeared that GGG dictated the pace and was the clear aggressor. And then the final 2 rounds where Canelo came out aggressive and was able to assert himself and take the closing rounds. 7-5 or 8-4 GGG seemed to be the correct scoring. A draw isn't out of the realm of possibility because it was a good fight but I don't agree with the decision. 118-110 for Canelo is a disgrace that didn't happen. 115-113 for Canelo, although I don't see it, I can accept just fine but that scorecard is just plain awful. Time for Byrd to call it quits. Anyway great fight, not trying to take anything away from Canelo he was great tonight as well but seemed like GGG was the clear aggressor throughout most of the fight and was able to throw more and land more. I think he deserved to get recognition for getting Canelo against the ropes as much as he did which is not an easy task. In the end 115-113 or 116-112 GGG seemed like the appropriate outcome. I thought GGG at the very least deserved to get a split decision. Bring on the rematch!

Fantastic fight!!
This was the fight we all wanted to see, we got to see it, and I think we can all agree, that it delivered! Alvarez and Golovkin were in tip top shape, they had both prepared so well, they had great game plans, and I don't think the fight could have been any better a combination of their strategies blending into a great battle.
I think Golovkin won, close, just by a couple of points, and I feel sorry for him, he strongly believes he won, probably by a wide margin, but Alvarez, what commitment, dedication he has shown in the last however many weeks in preparation for this fight, and what toughness, grit, heart he showed in the fight, to stand toe to toe with a dangerous fighter he has been accused of avoiding for years, and after all that, he just slips below what would have been the best victory of his career, certainly so far, he must have been devastated as well.

I don't complain about the draw, I don't want to state the obvious and say what everyone else is saying, about the really wide card, but that aside, I don't see why it was so disappointing to see a draw, the only thing I wasn't looking forward to seeing before the fight, was one of them losing, both these fighters deserve to win.

I think this was a bit of a two halves fight, in my opinion, nobody got the better of the first half, Golovkin, in my opinion, got the better of the second half. I said before the fight, in the first few rounds, youth, speed, outright weight, Canelo would get the better of the early rounds, and then in the mid rounds, the naturally bigger man, Golovkin, and a fighter who has plenty of experience of going 8 rounds, he would come on strong, and Golovkin did, as he dominated, to say the least, parts of rounds 4-5, and 7-9, and then in the late rounds, Canelo, the younger man, the man in his prime, the guy with experience of going 12 rounds, he would rally, and he did, he was coming off worse in most exchanges in rounds 7-9, rounds he definitely lost, and then in rounds 10-12, he found something in the tank, found another gear, and fought back, maybe getting the better of the last 3 rounds, I think he did, but you could disagree, because although he didn't fade, Golovkin didn't fade either, that was his problem, Golovkin may not have been winning early, but he also wasn't having to work as hard as Canelo in many of those earlier rounds, but for Canelo, the last 25% of the fight, was certainly better than the third 25% of the fight, you could make a case he won all 3 of the last 3 rounds, and I thought he had a good last round.

The durability of these two guys is outstanding, people should have talked more about their incredible ability to take massive shots than they did before the fight, because in those late rounds especially, they were taking full force, square on punches, cleanly tagged repeatedly, but it was to be expected, I don't believe either have been knocked down as professionals, or if they have, they haven't been knocked down many times at all, they have two of the strongest chins in boxing.

I thought both did great in this fight, I just think Golovkin was just too superior in those mid-late rounds he got the better of, and I think he won the fight, close, but Golovkin won. I think the rematch in May 2018, is a great idea, I think Canelo might just have the edge next time, Golovkin could well prove me wrong, but I would expect the 8 months between fights, to benefit Alvarez, and I think if the fight does happen, it will be another great fight, Golovkin will do brilliant again, but it will be Canelo who goes home with the victory, and the belts.

albertocastany's picture

Worst part is that I still get surprised by this bullshit

albertocastany's picture

I was about to acknowledge Canelo for doing a good job. I had it 117-111 for GGG but 2 of those were almost for Canelo. A Shame a good effort gets tainted by this

Left Eye's picture

Byrd should have her license revoked. Disgraceful, such brazen corruption.

albertocastany's picture

I'm sorry I have to say this....but I told you Lefy this would happen. A shame.

Gold's picture

Really coincidental how these scorecards happen in a lot of Canelo/DLH fights. Granted most of these aren't as bad as the Byrd 118-110, but the list is just incredible of strange scorecards and there would be a lot of judges to fire if they were held accountable. Canelo has the unreal Ross 114-114 vs. Mayweather, Martinez 117-111 vs. Lara, Christodoulou 118-109 vs. Trout, even Moretti's 119-109 vs. Cotto. Oscar has the illogical Kaczmarek 115-113 vs. Mayweather, Ross and Shirley 116-110 vs. Whitaker and Morita 116-112 vs. Quartey.

People are blowing this out of proportion because of the 118-110 scorecard. At the end of the fight i felt like it was an amazing fight and it could go either way... i was very happy it was a draw because neither really outclassed another one and it gives us a rematch. All this whining about the scorecards is taking away from the fight itself. Hell it could've been a real robbery if Canelo WON wide. A really close fight is ruled a draw and all i see is complaining. It was a good decision... i didnt even think they would give Golovkin a draw so...

Gold's picture

Sure it was a great fight and I'm happy we will likely get a rematch. Hopefully not one ""marinated"" by Oscar/Canelo because Golovkin wasn't old enough for Canelo to beat yet. I disagree that neither one really outclassed each other, as most of the rounds you could give Canelo were close with the exception of 2 and 3. The rounds Golovkin won he won clearly. The fight was that close because of the nature of round by round scoring. I really disagree with the idea that because this didn't go to the absolute worst scenario (Canelo wide UD in a relatively close and competitive fight) we should be happy with what we got, i.e. a judge that might as well have filled out her scorecard before the fight even started. I guess that shows how bad the judging is in general if it's a surprise Golovkin didn't get robbed blind.

Champion97's picture

I like the point you're trying to make, positive thinking is good, and with scorecards, it is what it is, nice amount of complaining will change it, but I think people have the right to spend a couple of days complaining, it stinks it really does, let's not forget, a judge, that isn't 1/100 judges who affects 1% of the decision, that's a third of the decision there!, but yes, the fight was close, it was competitive, it was awesome! I actually think Jacobs did ever so slightly better against Golovkin than Canelo, and I mean, ever so slightly, I think Jacobs should have the WBO opportunity, and Golovkin and Canelo, they get their rematch.

Gold's picture

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Jacobs will get the WBO shot as he's booked for the Wilder Ortiz undercard. In addition, there's no way BJS is letting that belt go to anyone other than Canelo or GGG unless he has to fight Jacobs as a mandatory because he'd get blown out by all three but wouldn't get paid vs. Jacobs. In a dream world, I'd like to see Jacobs vs. BJS and Canelo vs. GGG, and the winners facing each other to unify the division. I think Jacobs could give either Canelo or GGG trouble and it's possible for him to win a close decision. Realistically, GGG and his team are saying they want a fight in December versus BJS which could be a nice fight for him to stay active without taking damage but that might be too quick of a turnaround.

BIGLEFTHOOK's picture

theres no way canelo won that fight and no way its a draw

BoxNationscores12's picture

I love boxing, and you can not defend it this sort of thing, I'll say this until the day I drop dead, you can not say, Canelo won 10 of those rounds, it's criminal, she should be arrested.

BoxNationscores12's picture

Good fight, really was, high paced all the time, and that's what you get with Golovkin, constantly on you all the time, but in the early rounds, you'd tend to think that, Canelo was coping with the pace, coping with the pressure. Some thought Canelo would start fast, and then fade, he never faded, but Golovkin never faded either and that was the problem, and he was starting to find his range in the second half, I got him three points up.

This fight was the savior of boxing, and it was a tremendous fight to watch, the only thing we didn't want, was a draw, we didn't want a draw, we wanted a clear winner, but it was a great fight to watch, and I think we'll have to see it again now, it's impossible not to.

EndOfMe1994's picture

Rematch ordered.

Hoping to see a winner this time. I have a strong feeling it'll be Alvarez getting his hand raised.

what_is_the_default_password's picture

Unless Canelo fix his stamina issues I am not convinced he can legitimately beat GGG. Winning on the official scorecards is a different story though, somehow Canelo always benefit from some questionable scoring.

Champion97's picture

I don't agree, I think when you factor in that boxing is about timing, and you look at age, you see the possibility of the 8 months really benefiting Canelo and not GGG. I don't think Canelo has stamina issues, he never faded, his problem was that GGG didn't fade either, and he finsihed very strongly, Canelo.

what_is_the_default_password's picture

Fair enough. In my opinion the last round was by far Canelo's strongest round, if Canelo had fought more rounds like that instead of having his back glued to the ropes in the middle rounds I would have scored the fight a win for him, but Canelo didn't do that. He might or might not have stamina issues, but I felt as if his was saving energy for an impressive-looking final round, and if so why would he have the need to save energy? GGG looked like the guy with the better gas tank, if only because he was pressing the fight.

You are right though about how time favours the younger Canelo, it is not unheard of for some boxers to suddenly age overnight (Chocolatito came to mind as a recent example).

This decision reminds me a little bit of De La Hoya/ Quartey. One guy is he big star with a big future the other guy is an unappreciated stud.

Same way some people had that fight 6-6 but I thought Quartey won rather clearly on rounds 8-4 or perhaps 7-5.

Both fights are fishy/rigged/ ect.

the rematch is booked for May f*ck yes.

I am shocked at how well Canelo did considering his tune up fights for this were Khan, Liam Smith, and Chavez Jr.... meanwhile GGG has fought legit middleweights like Danny Jacobs, David Lemieux, and Martin Murray.

https://twitter.com/boxingscene/status/998697524352270337 Looks as if Clenelo is off the special sauce...Wonder if he can make weight now? ha.
