Re: Gervonta Davis vs Jesus Cuellar
Prediction,
I like this fight.
Gervonta Davis has a lot of talent, he has a lot of time to improve, and he already seems to have decent experience, he's 19-0, great amateur career, over 200 bouts. Davis best attribute seems to be his power, he is a very, very dangerous fighter, but as well, I think he is a very good technical fighter, he moves his head, pivots, he is a great all round offensive fighter, fast, he has good variety.
I think the biggest question you can ask of 'Tank' Davis, is his discipline, his commitment to the sport, last year, Davis lost his IBF title, he failed to make the weight, and he also failed to make the weight a few months earlier, in his first title defence, against Liam Walsh. Davis still fought, dominated then unbeaten Costa Rican, Francisco Fonseca, stopped him in 8 rounds, but didn't really impress, and questions of his discipline, consistency, wree bound to be asked.
Davis is very young, so if he can learn from his mistakes, hw can have a great career, I think he has the potential to be a top level fighter in a few years. I think Davis is sorry to anybody he thinks he let down in his last fight, and I think that has pushed him to train harder. You have to be impressed with Davis still competing at 130, he would not be prepared to make that weight if he wasn't serious about training hard, trying his best. This is a good chance for Davis to prove himself as a dedicated athlete, hopefully make 130, make a statement, and win another world title.
Jesus Cuellar is good, he's a former world champion, he has some good wins, he beat Vic Darchinyan in 2015 for the WBA 126 lb belt, defended against Jonathan Oquendo, he lost the title to Abner Mares, but put up a great effort, he is experienced, achieved a lot at Argentine and Latino level, and he has won quite a few interim world title fights.
Cuellar has not fought since the Mares fight, so that's 18 months, his only two losses are the Mares loss, and a stoppage defeat to Oscar Escandon in 2011, but at the same time, apart from Vic Darchinyan, he does have the Darchinyan win, and he has some otehr decent wins, Juan Manuel Lopez, Claudio Marrero, but at this level, it is worth noting that he probably didn't beat many really good world level fighters, and you could argue he was put in his place against Mares. Cuellar is 31, not old, but not young for a featherweight, and he probably isn't as good as he was a couple of years ago. Cuellar is the smaller fighter, that could make a big difference in this fight, this isn't his first fight at this weight, but he hasn't been at 130 since 2012.
I'm sure Cuellar will try his best, he will be 100% there to win, but I think he is in against a fighter who is a class above, a young fighter, a fighter who has been much more active than he has over the last year, a bigger fighter, and a fighter with extreme punch power. To say the least, this is a big ask for Cuellar.
I think for 5 or 6 rounds, this will be a really good fight, I think Cuellar will be happy to stand and trade with Davis, he'll have some success, do alright, especially in rounds 3 and 4, maybe win a round, I think he will be coming off worse most of the time in the first few rounds, but he will soak it up for 12 minutes or so. I think Davis's power will really start to take a toll around round 5, and Cuellar will begin to fade, the size advantage will matter, and I think by the time round 6 is done, Cuellar will seem just about done. I think Davis stops Cullar, at some point inside 6-8 rounds.

Re: Gervonta Davis vs Jesus Cuellar
I've seen conflicting reports on if this is for the Regular paper title or the actual Super title. Boxrec has Davis vs. Cuellar listed for the vacant Super title but that wouldn't make sense because Machado was/is theoretically the Super titlist. The WBA is the worst sanctioning body but I don't think they would downgrade a champion just because they have a potentially higher paying champion.

Re: Gervonta Davis vs Jesus Cuellar
It appears that when Corrales, who had the Super title, lost the Super title on the scales by missing weight versus Machado, they downgraded the title Machado could win to the Regular title. That makes no sense to punish Machado like that but it explains how Davis vs. Cuellar is for the Super title.

Re: Gervonta Davis vs Jesus Cuellar
Why doesnt Gervonta Davis go and fight the REAL champion Machado instead of bringing Old Cuellar up from featherweight who hasnt fought since 2016 ? Damn cherrypicking for a paper title.

Cherry picking:)
Maybe, for whatever reason, a deal couldn't be reached, and Cuellar was the best option for an opponent. Davis will probably fight better opposition later this year, he isn't out to beat Cuellar and claim to be pound for pound No. 1, he's aiming to make a statement and regain some momentum with a good win against a guy who is good for a stay busy fight, he would bea very tough opponent, but in all honesty, with the weight, age, and activity factors, I don't see Cuellar having much success.
I like Gervonta Davis, don't know why so many people don't!, apart from the lack of focus and discipline towards the end of last year, I don't think you can criticise.
Now that Lomachenko has moved up, who is the best in the division?, Davis?, Berchelt?, neither?

Re: Gervonta Davis vs Jesus Cuellar
Yeah i'd say Berchelt is the best in the division with Loma moving up to Lightweight. I'd favour him to beat Gervonta Davis. Then after Berchelt Davis and Machado, who has a very tricky and awkward style. Some good fights to be made in the division

Re: Gervonta Davis vs Jesus Cuellar
Interesting. I see that, Berchelt is underrated!, solid boxer, has some good wins, hits very hard, but I think Davis is better. Definitely, Machado has a lot to prove, but he is unbeaten, a world champion, credit to him for the Corrales win. Does Kenichi Ogawa have the IBF? Or did he lose that?
You get my post about the prediction competition?, if you did then no pressure, just a suggestion, but a prediction game might not be fun for everyone.

Farmer vs. Ogawa changed to a no contest and Ogawa stripped of the title. Farmer gets a layup fight for the vacant title versus Billy Dib.

Yeah sure, the thing is though, it is called PCOM (Prediction Champion Of The Month) and seeing as we are well into April, mid April, you would be starting this month behind, do you still want to be involved in the rest of the month?
Here is the explanation on how the points work

Here is the vault, predictions you make for fights outside of the vault won't be counted, but all the big fights are in the vault.

Re: Gervonta Davis vs Jesus Cuellar
Great performance from Davis, he really made a statement!
Davis's variety is outstanding, he is a phenomenal offensive fighter!
Cuellar showed heart, got up twice from agonising body shots and did not quit, he definitely earned his money, but he was in against a dangerous fighter who happened to be a level above him.
I think in a couple of years, Davis might even be a top 10 world fighter, in 4, maybe one of the best, he is a great technical fighter, he only ever gets hit because he has the other guy reeling and wants to keep the pressure on, he doesn't suffer from taking any shots he takes, wins everything, and he really inflicts damage, he has the skill, the power, the desire, what a fighter!
