Boxing Purist's picture

The write up for this fight said 6 points were deducted from Smith, but the film has no sound so I had to assume during the rounds where there was a lot of flagrant fouling that points were taken. I was only able to spot 3 frames where it looked like points might be taken.

Smith was really getting desperate there, not that some cheap fouls would faze Burley.

Who was ducked by Henry Armstrong, Fritzie Zivic, and then Sugar Ray Robinson? We see him here, in the only surviving footage of him, beating up Light-Heavyweight contender Billy Smith.

Charley Burley was a Welterweight.

Billy Smith appeared utterly perplexed in this fight because nothing he did was working. Stick a jab in Burley's face and Burley would pull back slightly making the jab fall short; try circling and dancing around Burley and he would cut you off; trying to bully and muscle Burley and he would spin you around and hammer the body like a matador subduing a bull (even if you outweigh him by some 20 pounds). If keeping him close was no good, keeping him afar would not save you either. For 10 rounds, Burley was a sniper landing bombs from long range almost at will and Billy Smith could not hit back.

Boxing writer Springs Toledo compared Burley's sharpshooting style to that of Roy Jones Jr, but personally I feel their execution could not be more different. Jones was an athletic freak whose style disregarded conventions of the sweet science, while Burley was the science at its sweetest. The man had completely tranquility, stemming from his firm control over the distance and the rhythm of the fight. No active fighter today, with the exception of Rigondeaux, approach the tranquility and control Burley exhibited in the fight.
