Prediction,

I like this fight, very interesting, should be an entertaining one.
Negatively speaking, both these guys have seen better days, especially Donaire, but positively speaking, both these fighters have a lot of pride and will want to win very much, they will both train hard, I don't think either has a great deal to lose, neither are too old to put up a great, spirited effort, so this has ingredients to be a great fight.

Both these guys are very good world level fighters, both have lost at a high level, both are rarely beaten, both have been world champions at more than one weight, I dont think either of these guys are at their best, but both were good enough that they are still good fighters even when they are over 30, this should be a very competitive fight.

Frampton is the favourite, and it isn't hard to see why.
- Frampton is the younger fighter by 4 years
- I think Frampton is the slightly bigger guy, he has never been at bantamweight, Donaire has fought at flyweight, besides the fact that he (at a younger age) has competed in nearly double the amount of featherweight fights Donaire has, having said that, Donaire is ever so slightly taller, has far more reach, and turned professional in his late teens, which makes it easier to see why he fought at such a low weight, early in his career
- I think Frampton (even though he is the younger and has had a lot less fights) may have the most meaningful victories, with the wins against Santa Cruz and Quigg, Donaire has plenty of good wins himself, Darchinyan, Nishioka, Narvaez, Arce, and he has won world title fight after world title fight, he's certainly done a lot more than Frampton has at world level, but I think Frampton's wins are slightly more significant, especially the Santa Cruz win, on the other hand, although by no means does Frampton's only career defeat cancel out what I think is his best win, it is something to take into account

You could argue that experience is important, and because Donaire has roughly double the amount of world title wins Frampton has, that will stand him in good stead, on the other hand, the higher number of fights, may be more a case of miles on the clock?

I think Frampton is the fresher fighter, he's younger, he's only lost once, I think he's more adjusted, more comfortable at 126, and I think he will win this fight.

I wouldn't be shocked if Donaire won this. I think Donaire, naturally, is the bigger puncher, bar a couple of fights, I think for the duration of his prime, he fought better opponents than Frampton did, and of course, in boxing, mentality is important, I don't think there is any reason to question Donaire's mental stability.

Frampton, I think is mentally challenged in the ring, he had a tough departure from his trainer, he was bouncing back from a defeat, and in his last fight, granted he won, but he struggled, did not look like the fighter he once was, Frampton has said he is concerned about his neurological safety, I think he mentioned reducing his sparring, which I think is a sign of a fighter who may want to start thinking about hanging up the gloves, it may be just a mental thing, maybe Frampton is one of those fighters who doesn't do well at 30 or older, it was possibly an off night, but against Horacio Garcia, he took a lot of punches, faded late in the fight, and a lot of his attributes which he has used very well in the past, didn't seem to be there so much.

I think Frampton will struggle against Donaire, and if he doesn't do a better job than he did against Garcia, I think he will lose, but I think although he won't be as good as he was in 2016, he will improve on his latest performance, I think Jamie Moore is a good trainer, tactically, there shouldn't really be any issues, and Frampton is strong enough at 126, his movement is good enough, he has the skills, and he has it in the tank to have the beating of a 35 year old Nonito Donaire.

My prediction is Frampton via UD, maybe quite wide.

Gold's picture

Just on name value Arce surely has to be one of the best opponents between them. The guy was way out of his weight range and way too old versus Donaire but he was a great fighter at Light Flyweight and went on to win championships at Super Flyweight, Bantamweight, and Super Bantamweight. He may even make the Hall of Fame.

Champion97's picture

I might have been off on that one.

Gold's picture

It's all good, if you haven't seen a lot of Arce he is a fun watch.

Champion97's picture

Cool. Can't believe Higa lost to Rosales!

Gold's picture

I should have changed my prediction when I saw he missed weight, the signs were there that he may be ready to be upset but I didn't recognize them. Apparently, he cuts a lot of weight to get to Flyweight. If he moves up, I don't think he will be too undersized for the weight.

Champion97's picture

No I don't think so either, I think if he genuinely tried, failed, by 2 lbs, nearer to the limit above, at 22, still maturing, at this point, I think it is time to move up. Higa has competed at 118 before, never below 112, he has outgrown the division, I think he should move up. Higa can bounce back from this, it is all a learning experience, he is young, and at super fly, he should do well.

What a performance from Carl Frampton!
I knew Frampton would box better than he did against Horacio Garcia, but he boxed better than I thought he would. I think Nonito Donaire is shot, he has had a phenomenal career, but at 35, after all he has been through in his career, it is definitely time for him to retire. You have to put some of how bad Donaire looked at times, down to Frampton making him look bad, being so dominant. I think Frampton is nearly as good as he was in 2016, if not as good!, I definitely think Frampton has proven himself as still a major player at 126!
