Prediction,

Good for the cruiserweight division that there is another WBSS tournament.

Dorticos did well last season, showed a lot of grit against Gassiev, for 4 rounds, he seemed more experienced, seemed to be edging the fight, but Gassiev came on, and in the last round, Dorticos was battered, knocked through the ropes. Dorticos has had 8 or 9 months to recover after the Gassiev loss, so he will be fine for having had enough time between fights, but the permanent dent in his punch resistance, what it may have taken away from him as a fighter, and the mental affect, that no one will know about until he fights. Dorticos is 32, not old at all, and he has a lot of amateur pedigree, a fair bit of experience as a pro, he only has the one loss, and he is a big puncher, so if he is still mentally in a good place, he should still be pretty much as good as he has ever been.

Masternak is underrated in my opinion, he is a veteran, been around for a long time, 45 fights, 41 wins, he's 31, so he isn't old either, he isn't fresh as a dasiy, but he has only been stopped once, and there is no record on BoxRec of him ever being dropped. Masternak's last loss was in 2015, on the Joshua vs Whyte undercard, he fought Tony Bellew, it was a great fight, both were hurt, but Masternak looked gone in the closing seconds, and Bellew won a UD, but not a wide UD. Masternak also has SD losses to Youri Kalenga, whohe just beat in a rematch, and Johnny Muller, he was stopped against Grigory Drozd in 2013, but he has won all his other fights.

Dorticos will be the favourite, he is a former world champion, he is more well known, but this is not an easy fight to predict. Masternak is younger than Dorticos, and he has had almost double the fights, over 3 times the rounds, and momentum is on his side, he comes off a win which avenged a defeat, Dorticos is coming off a brutal loss. Dorticos does have the much better amateur career behind him, he is the bigger puncher, and he might have the skills and gas tank to beat Masternak, but I don't think so.

Masternak might have lost to Kalenga, but he beat him in April, and Dorticos didn't have it all his own way against Kalenga, far from it, he was losing that fight after 9 rounds. Masternak proved against Bellew that he has the grit, engine to have that sort of fight, would have won the fight with experience, decent boxing and fighting ability, and desire, if Bellew had been a notch down from what he was, and Dorticos might hit harder than Bellew, have better amateur pedigree, but I don't think he has Bellew's gas tank, adaptability, and I think it is easier for an opponent to find his limit than to find Bellew's limit. I think if Masternak shows up like he did against Bellew, he is definitely capable of winning this fight, but he can't get careless, because Dorticos is very dangerous.

I think Masternak will win this, UD, too much output, experience, and he might have the mental edge. I wouldn't be surprised if Dorticos won, but my prediction is Masternak.

Great fight!

Masternak did exactly how I thought, but Dorticos was better, started very well, in rounds 2-3, 6-7, might have been the difference, his educated pressure, heavy hands, ability to work the body, slow Masternak down even momentarily, and attack with clean combinations, good work. Masternak did great, did everything right, used his jab, had a high output, attacked body and head, and late, it was Dorticos, the less experienced long distance fighter, who faded, and Masternak came on, but he was just in against a fighter who started too well, inflicted too much damage, was maybe just too good a boxer in terms of amateur background, and it wasn't enough in the end, Dorticos, I think won clearly, great performance.

To have the semi-final in January, I don't know who thinks that's when it should happen, but that's stupid, the semi-final should be in April in my opinion, March at the absolute earliest. I haven't seen Tabiti vs Fayfer, but Dorticos is a dangerous fighter, with plenty of experience, good basics, and is on form, so that's some task for Tabiti to beat Dorticos.
