Yoan Pablo Hernandez vs Steve Cunningham II
Yoan Pablo Hernandez 25-1 (13 KOs) vs. Steve Cunningham 24-3 (12 KOs)
A tentative opening to the bout, picked up in Round 2 as Hernandez found success to the body. Hernandez continued to throw in flurries in Round 3 and again landed shots to Cunningham's body. Cunningham had his moments in the round, but simply was not throwing enough to earn rounds. Cunningham came out more aggressive in the 4th Round and landed some early. A short-left hook midway through Round 4, however, caught Cunningham flush coming in and sent him down on his back. He struggled to get to his feet, but was able to get up and action continued. An immediate barrage by Hernandez sent Cunningham falling forward and down again. It appeared Cunningham may go down again for a third time in the round or that the referee may step in and call the match. Despite being badly wobbled, however, he kept his feet and survived the round. Midway through Round 5, as Hernandez attacked, Cunningham landed a right hand that stumbled the defending champion. Also in the round, a cut opened on the inside of Cunningham's right eyebrow. It would stream down his nose for much of the remainder of the fight but did not appear to affect his vision. Cunningham found some confidence in the 6th Round with increased activity against Hernandez, who appeared to take the round off. The snap returned to Hernandez's punches in Round 7 and he landed thudding shots downstairs. Cunningham connected with a decent right hand late landed to the side of Hernandez's head. Cunningham looked to put pressure on Hernandez in the 8th and found a home for the jab and shots to the body. The champion began to look winded and aside from a left hand early did not land with much affect. Action slowed in Round 9, one which could have been scored for either man. Hernandez took Round 10 if by nothing more than activity. In the final round, Hernandez staggered Cunningham who was able to clinch and keep his feet.
