Prediction,

I think this is like Mayweather vs Canelo, it's an older, smaller veteran, against a talented but inexperienced fighter. Lomachenko is younger than Mayweather was, and Canelo was more experienced vs Mayweather than Lopez now, but I think the 2 fights are similar, because experience is the difference.

Strength and power favours Lopez, Lomachenko will be hurt if he's hit clean, Lopez judges distance, and is a counter puncher, so he has more than power, and Lomachenko can't afford mistakes.

Apart from Commey, Lopez's opposition has been a level below, there's no comparison for amateur careers, Lopez has been 12 rounds, but that's the only time he's been 8 rounds.

I don't think Lopez can deal with Lomachenko's angles or feet adjustments, I think Lomachenko will be a step ahead for the most part, he's far better defensively, and most of what Lopez does well, Lomachenko does better. I think Lopez will lose confidence in the second half, go for broke late, but if he tries to attack, he will be made to miss and pay.

Lopez's durability will be tested in the second half, I don't think Lomachenko can hurt him with 1 shot to the chin, but can take a toll with clean shots in high volume, round by round.

I think Lopez will do similar to Campbell, I think he'll do worse technically, but Lomachenko will be more cautious, I think Lopez will hurt Lomachenko early, and if he does, how he builds on it will be interesting. I think Lomachenko will take control from round 4 or 5, Lopez will be less accurate, will tire in rounds 8-10, Lomachenko will land the counter left hand more often as the rounds go on, and be more varied as Lopez leaves more openings.

I think Lomachenko wins a wide UD, I think Lopez will win 2-3 rounds, make it a good fight, but not close. I'd be surprised if Lopez won this. Lopez might have the potential to be as good as Lomachenko, he certainly has the potential to be at his level, and I think he'll learn and improve from this fight.

I've got to say Lomachenko wins this.

Lopez certainly has the physical tools to win this, but he lacks both the experience and patience necessary to beat Lomachenko. People have started talking about how much more frequently Lomachenko's been getting hit, specifically referring to Linares and Campbell in this case, but there are some significant differences here.

Namely, I want you to look at how these people throw their shots, and how Lope throws his shots. They weren't throwing every shot the same speed to knock Lomachenko out with each punch. In fact they mostly were throwing to land. People who throw to knock him out miss nearly every punch and get countered all night long.

Lopez doesn't have the patience for that, because he's never had a fight that he's had to learn the value of patience. Even Nakatani, who did well in neutralizing his game plan, wasn't nearly a good enough counterpuncher to make him pay for his lack of patience. Lomachenko definitely is.

Lopez only chance is to beat Lomachenko early, before he has time to collect data on how he fights, because after the third round, every weakness he has in there will be exposed and in plain view for Lomachenko to exploit. Every Lomachenko fight has one pattern: It gets more one sided the longer it goes. It also seems like Lopez's power doesn't carry over into the later rounds given that when he started landing on Nakatani late, he couldn't seem to hurt him.

Ultimately, I'm going for Lomachenko by either late round TKO (possibly a No Mas. We'll see how much of what Lopez said is just bravado.) or a Unanimous decision to the tune of 117-111.

I'm pumped for this one

Will be very surprised if Lopez wins. Loma has far more experience and ring IQ. Respect to Lopez for taking on the challenge but I see a late Loma TKO, or wide UD.

Jarod Killian's picture

yeah, you know what fight I want to see? Lomachenko vs Haney

Chris M95's picture

if Teofimo causes the massive upset would y'all have him top 10 p4p

Champion97's picture

Easily top 10, even with it only being one fight, Lomachenko is arguably the best in the world, a win of this magnitude, unless it's highly controversial, would no doubt put him in the top 10.

Chris M95's picture

agreed even tho i wouldnt argue with fans saying 1 it just might be a one hit wonder like Jeff Hrn and lets wait to see if Teofimo can have continued success at the highest level 2. "lets wait Loma will be execising the rematch clause"

Gold's picture

I thought Bob said no rematch clause?

Chris M95's picture

yup Bob did say no rematch clause

Champion97's picture

That was highly controversial, I thought Horn did enough to beat Pacquiao, Pacquiao wasn't robbed in the mind of his own trainer or promoter, Pacquiao's popularity has caused bias in his favour, but it went down as a robbery, and he Pacquiao was very old, beating Lomachenko would be a bigger win even with the size advantage.

MINIMaxBOXING's picture

Loma 118-110, 116-112, 115-113.

Champion97's picture

I was surprised Lopez won this, he's a great fighter, has a great future. I don't know where Lomachenko goes from here, he hasn't adapted well to being being above his natural weight class, which great fighters almost always do, I don't know why he's been so much less dominant at 135, it's only one above his natural weight class, but he's not the fighter at 135, that he is at 130, I think he'd be wise to move down, 130 might be Top Rank's most competitive division, there are plenty of fights there for him.

Lomachenko deserves credit for how he rallied in rounds 8-11, he did similar to Rigondeaux against him in the first 7 rounds, but he didn't quit or go on a survival mission, he dug deep, pushed Lopez onto the back foot and made him miss, landed more, hurt him to the body in round 11, he out fought Lopez, but Lopez found a second wind in the last round, showed grit himself, Lomachenko had a good last round in the tank, but Lopez's strength, heavier hands were the difference.

Lomachenko's offence was almost non existent for 7 rounds, his demeanour was different to normal, the first 3 rounds didn't surprise me, I thought his low output was part of the game plan, but his output was still low in the next few rounds. Lopez controlled the distance, it didn't matter what angle Lomachenko could throw from, because he wasn't in range to land, I think he felt the power on his guard in the early rounds, was discouraged, but he knew Lopez was a counter puncher, could catch him coming in, Lopez used feints, his reflexes were brilliant, his jab isn't great as it's own point scorer, but he uses it to judge the distance, Lomachenko couldn't negate it.

I think Lopez has the potential to be the pound for pound best, but he was inexperienced before this fight, Lomachenko is a great fighter, he might have been slightly overrated before the fight, but Lopez made him look bad, and to have boxed as well as he did, at 23, was very impressive, Lopez vs Haney would be the fight for undisputed, if their handlers can come to an agreement, that fight should be next, but if not, Lopez should move up, he's very big at 135, 140 is another one of Top Rank's most competitive divisions.

Metalhead123's picture

I am impressed. I knew Teo was good, but he completely succeeded my expectations. I did not think i would see Loma loose tonight, let alone on points. Congratulations Teo!

Guy Incognito's picture

Sensational upset!

I had a draw, but I really had no issue with Lopez winning. I definitely had an issue with the one official judge's scorecard though.

Wow. A very big upset. Teofimo clearly has boxing IQ. He was landing the harder shots too. We've just witnessed the birth of a new PPV star. I wonder if there will be a rematch, Lopez-Loma 2. I'd watch it.

Without any doubt - Lopez. I had no idea what Loma was doing these first 6-7 rounds. It's really bad for boxer of that caliber to wait that long to start boxing (like the only gameplan was to KO Lopez). It's fine to take couple of first round to get going but half of the fight... and Lopez was really suffering those 8-11 rounds and being outboxed... In my books, Loma lost this fight more because of himself rathen than Lopez. Lopez did very well what he was offered and kept his own pace and distance. You could stretch this match to be draw if there wasn't that great 12th round from Lopez

Brilliant fight from Lopez. Major factor is Lopez's size, just too big for Loma to crack through. But, he also fought a brilliant tactical fight in terms of maintaining distance and punch selection. Loma had no answer, especially with his fateful decision to do nothing until the 8th round--might have been different if he'd decided to take chances to get inside the reach of Lopez in round 3 or 4, but I doubt it, don't think Lopez was going to be denied. Very easy to decision of 116-112 or 117-111. Nothing else makes any sense.

For me it looked that Loma was doing far better than Lopez in punch exchanges in these later rounds and the question is: what would happen if he pushed himself inside much earlier? I do not underestimate the effort and skillset from Lopez, he clearly won the fight but I think Loma waited to long to take risk. For me 117-111 is too wide although not crazy person's card like 119 - 109..

Julie Lederman has been a complete disgrace to boxing for many years. Yet she still gets on the panels due to her connections.

Gold's picture

Anyone who thinks Loma won or could have won round 2 including Ward is admitting how biased they are

Gold's picture

Same with round 6. 115-113 (1-6, 12) Lopez is as close as possible, giving round 7 to Lomachenko is generous too

Spot on. I gave Teo the first 7.

It may not county but I think I was the only one on this page to predict a Lopez win. I predicted a knockout though so I got that wrong lol.

SalTnutZ1's picture

I’ve been calling it for almost 2 years, lol.

Ah, nice.

Incredible performance from Teofimo. Completely deserved that win.

Loma didn't throw a punch for half the fight and then disagrees with the scorecards? OK. The truth is that guys at this weight are so much bigger than him that when he gets incredible power like Teofimo, getting inside and having to take those shots to get in range is just asking too much. Even when Loma took over in the second half of the fight, eventually Teofimo nailed him (in the 12th).

I don't think anyone really thought Teofimo was as skilled as he was and even more impressive was his concentration. Extreme focus. I do think Loma underestimated his opponent to a degree. Loma expected opportunities to present themselves much earlier than they did and by that point, half the fight had gone. Lopez was so good in the first half of the fight he didn't allow Loma to do anything without taking a big risk.

I also don't think the affect of the Luke Campbell fight can be underestimated here. Loma decided he took too many big shots in that fight and didn't want to get his toes wet. He thought he could do that but Teofimo was too good.

Completely deserved win imo. He talks the talk.....but he also walks the walk.

I honestly think you could make a case for Lederman, 1-7, 12 are clear, no way Loma wins any of those rounds 10 and 11 are close if you really watch. Many judges give rounds to a fighter based on relative success/recency bias. 116-112 Lopez is as close as this fight should be on anyone's card. Very easy fight to score.

116-112 is fair. 117-111 is a little questionable. 119-109 is utter bull shit.

I can't really make a good case for Loma winning, but he definitely won at least 4 rounds.

Champion97's picture

AJ Knight, I agree 100%

I don't agree I think lopez did very well 7 ronds could swith so I can have to 115 113 loma to 120 108 lopez I think I waste majority of professional jugdes ringside could have scored it 116 112 or 117 111 lopez as far as I'm cocern I fel closer to lederman's 119 109 then your's 115 113 but your card his acceptable because you didn't gave a fighter a roujd that the the other as convinsly won, fair enought

SalTnutZ1's picture

The fact that this fight has over 50% controversy shows that it's not just professional judges who show incredible fighter bias. This fight wasn't that close, and even getting to a draw is a huge stretch of the imagination.

I don't see any reason to doubt Lomachenko clearly won rounds 8-11, no reason to doubt Lopez won the rest, so based on that, Lopez won 8-4, which is the start of a wide card. I think Lopez the controversy rating would be a lot lower if Lopez conducted himself differently and had been more magnanimous. Do you agree with that assessment?

lopez won round 9 on power punches at least for me

I don't believe anyone could reasonably argue anything closer than 115-113 Lopez. Anything closer than that, I think bias plays a part. I don't believe you can score 1-6, nor 12, to anyone but Lopez, and I'd argue 7 is pretty solidly his as well. To get to 115-113, or any decision that would be a draw, or Loma win, I think you would have to swing every possible round, including some biased rounds, to get there. Honestly, I think the 119 and 117 scores for Lopez were much closer to reality than anything that would get you to a draw or Loma win. I don't believe how a fighter talks should influence scoring. I don't like what Fury says/does, and Wilder is my guy, yet I still scored Wilder-Fury I to Fury. You can not enjoy a person, but respect them as a fighter and what they do in the ring.

@saltnutz yup worst i can see as well 115-113 and widest 117-111..i literally jus saw someone on fb justify a 114-114 unofficial card giving rd 4 to Loma that to me is as bad as Julie Lederman's 119-109 card giving rds 8 & 10 to Lopez if not worse...regards to Fury WIlder i had it 113-113 on fight night and watching it again i felt like i made a mistake giving rd 1 to WIlder and the 3rd rd was much closer than i remember but still saw Fury winning it tight with a right hand in the middle minute not far from center ring proving the difference...saw rd 4 for Wilder second time...but once you saved it cant change a scorecard right..(dont wanna hold the official judges to a different standards) .only time i do that when i copy paste shit wrong and sometimes i go back to some cards on here and i find 10-10s but i never score 10-10s lol

with regards to Ward scoring i find myself usually disagreeing with his cards usually mainly after the lockdown and i kinda anticipate it sometimes based on some of the arguments he has with Bradley during the rds...during 1 commentating and interacting with each other and 2 doing their job which is to try and help sell the product to the audience who subscribed to the networks they generally miss on a few things in the rds
not that Harold Lederman or Steve Farhood are the highest standards of unofficial judging with little to no flaws but they do a much better jobs generally imho when they have lesser time to interact with the commentary team as a rule of thumb Lederman...when made to stay for more in round action or called on for help explaining other technical stuff or Farhood when he was a full on commentator for ShoBox and lesser events i been felt

I think Andre Ward's cards really shine a light on how hard it is to call a fight and score at the same time. I think that's in part why his cards are a bit weird sometimes.

I think it shows Ward's bias to who he perceives as the better boxer of the two, perhaps there is something to what you are saying, he has had other bad scorecards as well. He picked Lomachenko to win the fight and likely wants to try to make Lomachenko vs. Stevenson down the line given he manages Stevenson. People have to realize that just because someone is great at a skill like Ward doesn't mean they are great at analyzing it and doing it in an unbiased way. In respect to his scorecard from this fight, it took him from the knowledge of an ATG level fighter to a Loma stan, kind of funny.

I 100% agree on that, I was rooting for Lomachenko, but I did my best to be unbiased, same with Whyte vs Parker, some people know they're biased, but sometimes it's unconscious bias, I've had bad scorecards when I've been biased in the past, and believed my card was unbiased when I scored the fight.

Did you get my comment about Inoue vs Moloney?

Loma landed the only truly good combo in round 2. Watch the combo right here: https://imgur.com/gallery/Nqmimnb

Given than almost everyone gave Loma rounds 8-11, he would only need two other rounds for a draw. I believe Loma also won rounds 2 and 7.

I personally don't care how a fighter acts, am only interested in judging the fight objectively, but it could play into the scoring by people here sure.

Anyone who knows anything about boxing knows how easy this fight was to score. Lopez dominated/Loma did nothing (would not punch) for the first seven rounds, the next four were close but by no means clear cut for Loma, and 12 was clear for Lopez.

100% craftycounter, this was not a hard fight to score. Lopez won clearly, there is zero controversy about the outcome of this fight. I agree with you in saying 119-109 is more realistic than anyone saying 114-114 or Lomachenko winning. The former is possible if you give Lopez the benefit of the doubt in the competitive rounds, the latter is not possible if you give Lomachenko the same benefit of the doubt.
