Comments

One of the greatest heavyweight battles of all time.

Champion97's picture

This could have been the most brutal boxing fight in the history of the sport.

Acerbitas's picture

I agree, the heart and determination (blood, sweat and tears) both guys put into their war in Manila will never be forgotten. Joe Frazier put up a great fight and it is just bad luck that he was blind in one eye otherwise he probably could have continued and done better in most of his fights.

Muhammad Ali's doctor said Ali was never the same after this fight. Apparently he wasn't even walking the same and was urinating blood days after the fight and had haematoma's in his hips from the sustained body assault from Frazier.

If the fight hadn't been stopped I still think Ali would've won pretty comfortably.

Champion97's picture

True, this fight shouldn't have continued and the the stoppage is bang on but I just think it wrong to stick RTD on Frazier's record after he said he wanted to continue despite the beating he had taken, if they had gone to the cards Ali would have won, the word 'comfortably' can be used in different ways in this sport, some say it meaning a possibly close but clear victory and others say it meaning emphatic, if you mean the latter then I disagree but I do agree Ali deserved the victory, just not by any form of knockout, however, I do understand that in boxing, the rules have to be respected, and a fight can't continue if a trainer pulls his fighter out, so I'm not going criticise anybody, it is more just a matter of feeling so sorry for Joe Frazier because of the huge shame and inconvenience of being pulled out so late, with only one round to go.

I meant 'comfortably' as in he would've won on my scorecard even if Frazier managed to win the last round and the fight had to come to a decision. I apologize for not being clear enough but I do agree man it's not fair that he had to get that RTD but unfortunately it's the fight game and they have to put a result on paper.

Champion97's picture

It's cool mate, I just feel as though they should have gone to the cards for a TD, I'm not disputing Ali deserved the victory, just not by any sort of KO, if Frazier had quit then it would look no different on paper to the warrior being pulled out even though he wanted to continue, that takes a hell of a trooper if you think about the horrific beating he took. Anyway we both agree with each other. Good to speak to you BTW, what are you predicting about Mayweather vs Pacquiao? Whatever happens it will be a huge event, I can't see it being a brutal battle but I think it will liven up as it goes on, I think Manny Pacquiao will win with his stamina, I think his power will be a key factor but I think the trouble for Floyd will be more the threat of the straight left rather than actually being knocked out.

I don't know man. My heart says Pacquiao but my head says Mayweather. The stamina will be a key factor and the footwork is key aswell. For Pac to win I think he needs to take full advantage of his many physical gifts and smother Floyd with enough volume to win over the judges. For Floyd he just needs to do what he's always done and use whatever tricks he has up his sleeve to counter and frustrate Pacquiao and adjust to the typhoon that's approaching him.

Champion97's picture

You make some good points there, I just feel as though there are advantages on both sides but for me Pacquiao can use his stamina to set a fast pace and keep it up for 12 rounds, Floyd didn't want this fight, there is nowhere else to go. If you like you could read my round by round analysis of the fight, it is what I think will happen when they fight, you don't have to but I think you will agree about how each of them could win, I think that the jab to the body will be a big problem for Manny and so will the lack of head movement, I think there will be a couple of rounds where Mayweather uses his superior timing and defensive skills and out boxes Pacquiao but I think that Pacquiao will use his feet and keep Floyd on his toes, I think Floyd will be told by his corner to go for the knockout and I think Manny is prepared, Floyd won't have enough in the tank believe me, a fighter is so much slower and weaker when he or she is tired, in a fight that I think will be so close after 8 or 9 rounds 3 or 4 decisive rounds can make a difference, also I think Manny has the power to hurt Mayweather, Mayweather was caught and buzzed by Judah multiple times and look at that knock down Manny scored over Algieri in round 9 of their fight, I don't think Floyd will hurt Manny but I think the snap will hurt Mayweather, also the work rate of Manny will make it so hard for Floyd to find his Rhythm. You don't have to agree with me, it is just very interesting to talk about a fight that will be such a big a event, the build up is huge.

You make some good points aswell I do think the jab to the body will be Floyd's greatest asset in this fight. He'll really to need to tire Manny out early to gain advantage in the late rounds. On the other hand I think Manny's greatest tools will either be his right hook and his left straight. I think if he puts in the effort to use that hook on the body, he can do some good damage on Floyd. He also needs to lead more with his left hand to mix up his arsenal a bit.

For Floyd another good tool is the right straight. It's a good counter for the Manny's right hook because if you've noticed, Manny has a tendency to drop his left hand when throwing that hook.

Absolutely, I have always said that Manny can get clumsy and get caught with counter punches he shouldn't. I doubt Mayweather could ever tire Manny out, Bradley and Algieri both fight at much faster paces, they are not as good Mayweather of course but they fight at faster laces and Manny never showed any signs of fatigue in either fight, something I thinking a concern for Roach is Pacquiao running out of ideas, Mayweather is so smart they really do need to make themselves unpredictable, I agree about Manny's left hand and right hook. I think he will go to the body more in this fight, it is unexpected, it will make Floyd more tired and Maidana exposed Mayweather's weakness for body shots. I think Manny needs to keep focusing on different angles and he should keep circling around Floyd, if Floyd goes for the KO then this will benefit Manny. I do think there is a good chance of Floyd winning though and this will happen if Manny just comes forward and throws flurries as hard and fast as he can because Mayweather time his moves beautifully, he will land nice counter ter punches and hold so he does not get hit clean, I do think it depends on Pacquiao more than Mayweather and this is one of the 2 reasons I think he will win.
