The Super Fight: Marvin Hagler vs. Sugar Ray Leonard
Fight Notes: The most controversial fight of the 1980s. Some liked Marvin Hagler's aggression and physicality. Others preferred Sugar Ray Leonard's inspiring combinations off the ropes. In the end, after the scorecards were read, there was a new middleweight champion of the world. A disgusted Hagler never fought again, while Leonard went on to garner additional title belts at 168 and 175. |

What a great fight, for me it was a draw, nobody likes a draw, there you have it, it is good to see this fight was a split decision, obviously, complaining about it won't change anything, it is a closed issue, but just through stating the obvious, I will say that I find 118-110 for this fight unbelievable, scorecards don't come much worse than that. I really wish we could have seen a rematch for this fight, seeing as Marvin was blatantly so gutted about losing a fight he thought he legitimately won, and couldn't see why he didn't get the decision. I think it should be of some comfort to Marvin Hagler than after this fight, Leonard admitted that he would have lost this war had it been a 15 round fight.

I like the Draw notion. Even number of rounds. Why can't it be a draw then? I think there have been a number of bad decisions just because a judge reaches to give a fighter some kind of a lead or give the fight some kind of direction..... beating a dead horse, but I don't see how you could give Ray round 6 or 12. I see roughly half of the people here did give him one or both of those. It's a dead horse but we haven't found out what killed it I guess.

Draw.
Even if I gave a close round to Leonard or vice versa, there wasn't more than a point in it either way.
A draw is the fairest and correct decision in my opinion.
118-110 Leonard remains one of the most absurd scorecards in boxing history.

Both fighters past their prime. Both seemed to be dealing with stamina issues late. The event itself out-shined the action in the ring. Not a bad fight, extremely tactical for connoisseurs of the fight game, but might have seemed anti-climatic for casual fans (especially those expecting something like Hagler-Hearns and Hagler-Mugabi).

Re: The Super Fight: Marvin Hagler vs. Sugar Ray Leonard
I've seen this fight twice, twice this year. I remember the first time, I thought this fight was brutally even and was literally the closest fight I've ever seen and I scored it a draw. I felt if there was a slight edge though, I would give it to Leonard. I rewatched it today and felt it was a draw again but I could also see it 115-113 for Leonard. I did feel I was being generous to Hagler today but I'm not sure. Leonard landed overall the bigger and cleaner punches and Hagler missed a lot. Hope somebody replies to this soon so we can talk about this! :p get back at me ya'll

Awesome fight, but I think looking back, Leonard won clearly, I did have it close though, and Hagler must have won more than 2 rounds. Leonard admitted after the fight that had it been 15 rounds, in a smaller ring, he would have lost, knowing why you will or won't win is a great quality for a fighter.

Definitely, both were though. Who is the greatest of all time for you? I think Mayweather personally.

Re: The Super Fight: Marvin Hagler vs. Sugar Ray Leonard
I'll have to rewatch it because I haven't seen it in a while, but even though I scored it a draw I felt like it would be a lot easier to give Leonard 115-113 than it would be to give Hagler 115-113. Leonard had a great strategy to win rounds by focusing on landing clean flashy combinations in bursts to try to steal the rounds, a strategy that would also be controversially used by Mayweather, De La Hoya, and Canelo later on. Neither Hagler or Leonard were in their primes for this fight, but it is worth mentioning that very few people thought Leonard could win at the time and it is arguably Leonard's greatest accomplishment.
