Ryan Burnett vs Nonito Donaire
WBA bantamweight champion, Ryan Burnett, takes on Philippino boxing legend, Nonito Donaire, in the quarterfinals of the World Boxing Super Series.
Burnett is a heavy favourite, Donaire, 36 years old, and with a lot of miles on the clock. Donaire makes a tough weight cut to compete back down at 118, after 7-8 years competing at 122 and 126.
Burnett starts fast, uses his feet, lands a lot of clean counters as Donaire comes in, but Donaire looks themuch physically stronger of the two, and easily walks through Burnett's punches. Donaire goes on the offensive in round 3, Burnett uses good defence, but the aggressor has success.
Disaster strikes for Burnett in round 4, as Burnett swings and misses badly with a right hand, falls to the floor in agony, having clearly injured himself very badly, the referee counts for a knockdown after Burnett went down, and Donaire goes on the attack for the remainder of the round against a badly injured Burnett.
After 4 rounds, Burnett's corner have no choice but to stop the fight.
Burnett is devastated, is carried out on a stretcher.
Donaire shows great sportsmanship, doesn't celebrate straight away.
Donaire pulls out an upset, advances to the semi-finals.
