SRR vs GF II

Boxing Purist's picture

A brilliant change of tactics and calm patience was what Sugar Ray Robinson used from the outset of this rematch, and it worked to perfection. A determined Robinson calmly waited for Fullmer to engage and then countered beautifully. It was a great plan by Robinson and by the 5th frame he had Fullmer set up to land a huge shot that ended Gene's night early. And just like that for a 4th time Ray Robinson was the Middleweight Champion of the World.

DavidC77's picture

Fullmer said years later in a Robinson documentary that he had won every round and Robinson wanted to quit after round 4 but was persuaded to come out for one more round.
If that was his true assessment of what happened then Robinson's left hook must have been even better than I thought because it would mean that Fullmer was still in a daze and talking nonsense decades later.
I had Fullmer slightly ahead. There was no way he had won every round and Robinson would never have even considered quitting under those circumstances.
