Prediction,

Donaire is a 4 weight world champion, won his first world title in 2007, is 36, but is declining incredibly slowly. Inoue is still relatively inexperienced, he has vastly improved in the last few years, but he has never fought an opponent of Donaire's calibre. Donaire is vastly more experienced, he knows all the tricks, might the the more strategic fighter.

118 might be Inoue's natural weight, he hits extremely hard, is strong at 118. Donaire has looked great in his last 2 fights, 118 is his weight, and I think the Frampton and Magdelano fights were more down to weight than age.

Both have devastating power, Inoue has 90% KOs, has displayed top level power in his last 3 fights. Donaire's KO in his last fight, was a strong candidate for KO of the year. Donaire was not ahead in either of the Darchinyan fights, but he knocked him out twice, he even hurt Walters despite being several weights above his natural weight, he knocked out Arce in 3 rounds. It is hard to say who hits harder out of Inoue and Donaire, but based on his last few fights, I think Inoue.

I question whether it's wise for Inoue's brother to fight on his under card in a fight this important, when his brother is the heavy underdog. The Charlos fought on the same card in December, Jermell lost, Jermall won, but he didn't dominate or get the KO as he was supposed to, I think his brother losing was a factor, and he wasn't mentally 100%.

I think Inoue is phenomenal, a special fighter, he moved up in weight last year, got 3 early KOs, and McDonnell, Payano, Rodriguez, all good fighters, Payano has proven since, that he is not finished, Rodriguez will probably prove not to have been overrated despite the Inoue fight.

I don't think Inoue has to rely on Donaire's age or miles, I think Inoue can be a lot better than Donaire was. Against McDonnell, he nullified McDonnell's massive reach advantage, cut the distance, Tyson esc, against Payano, another first round KO, and against Rodriguez, after a close first round, Inoue destroyed him, it was the body shot that did most damage. It's the power of Inoue, but also the timing, accuracy, ability to execute a perfect KO.

I think Donaire will give Inoue his toughest fight since Carmona, he hits harder than Inoue's last 3 opponents, his chin will be tested, but I think Inoue will respect Donaire's power, he will be patient, wait for the counter, and do damage. I've never seen Donaire hurt, even at 126, but I think Inoue will hurt him as soon as he lands clean. I think both fighters will be hurt in this fight, but I think Donaire will only hurt Inoue once, won't build on it, and Inoue will respond similar to Crawford against Gamboa.

I think Inoue will win the first 3 rounds with aggression, Donaire will be patient, but won't find any openings, will be pushed onto his back foot, the tempo will be taking a lot more out of him than Inoue. I think Donaire will hurt Inoue at the start of round 4, but he won't be able to build on it, Inoue will recover, set Donaire up when Donaire tries to build on his success, and knock him out later in the round.

Champion97's picture

Great fight!
Donaire gave Inoue his toughest fight so far, nobody gave him a chance, and even though he didn't win, he should get a lot of credit. Questions were asked of Inoue, he was backed up, was caught clean by a big puncher, he was hurt in rounds 8 and 9, and he came back well. Inoue hit Donaire with shots he's been destroying opponents with early, and Donaire took them well overall, Inoue was patient, didn't get reckless when he did hurt Donaire, but didn't let Donaire off. Inoue hurt Donaire bad to the body in round 11, I thought he was counted out legitimately.

I think there will be less hype around Inoue now, but he will be a better fighter, will learn and improve from this fight. Donaire should retire, he did great in this fight, but he took a lot of damage, he has a lot of miles, will only get worse, has achieved all he will achieved, but he should go down in the hall of fame, has had a great career.

TheUndefeated's picture

I don't want to overstate it in the moment...but that was a truly incredible fight. Maybe one of the best I've ever seen. Well worth being a little late for work today!

Gold's picture

The front runner for FOTY for you? We have had some great fights this year, Spence vs. Porter, Joshua vs. Ruiz I, Taylor vs. Prograis, etc. I don't think most people expected this year to be this good

TheUndefeated's picture

Yeah, FOTY for me. They just seem to keep getting better and better. Taylor-Prograis probably second. Wish more sports fans paid attention to boxing. They literally have no idea the drama they are missing.

No not even close for me, ROTY of the year most definitely Round 11! As far as FOTY goes, I'd say Taylor-Prograis is my front runner followed by Spence vs Porter. Joshua vs Ruiz I I'd say Upset of the Year. To me a FOTY has to be very back and forth with constant changes in ebb and tide.

It was great but I still think Spence Porter was FOTY

While I wouldn't go as far as to say that this fight was the FOTY or even a candidate for it really, I will say Round 11 is a ROTY candidate for sure! Definitely a good fight don't get me wrong and great effort by Donaire but not a FOTY candidate for me.

I'm actually more convinced that Inoue is a P4P top 5 star after this fight.

I want to point out that Donaire has been KO'd precisely once in his career, and that was at 126, against Nicholas Walters who was a knockout artist. He has always had an iron chin, so the fact that Inoue was able to hurt him badly enough that he had to be saved by the bell at least twice (not counting the body shot in round 11 which of course has nothing to do with a chin) says a lot for his power.

For my money, Inoue could be a massive star up to Featherweight at least if not higher.

He showed composure when cut, a great chin against a much larger opponent, and the kind of power that makes for a highlight real fighter.

Great performance from Inoue, and full respect to Donaire.

Wow! The skill level is incredible here and the heart shown by both fighters! Truely a great fight!!
