Prediction,

I hope this is nearly as good as Usyk vs Briedis was.
Nothing better than a unification fight in boxing!
Both these guys are unbeaten, both these guys are experienced, they have both had more than 20 fights, they are both tall for the weight, at around 6'3, they can both punch.
I think Dorticos is a particularly dangerous fighter, he has stopped all but 1 of his previous 22 opponents, he is the bigger puncher in this fight.
Gassiev has I think the stand out win out of the 47 wins between the two guys, with the victory over Denis Lebedev, a convincing achievement.
Gassiev has had a few bouts more than Dorticos, but Dorticos, starting out as a professional, a couple of years earlier than Gassiev, he is 7 years older. Gassiev must have been about 17 when he turned pro, which is very young, it suggests he didn't have much if an amateur career, Dorticos, besides being Cuban, must have started out as a turned pro at about 22, which suggests he had more amateur career time, which he did, so Dorticos, overall, maybe with the more ring experience, he had a good amateur career, well over 200 bouts, he fought Artur Beterbiev, Dmitry Chudinov.
As a professional, Gassiev, not as big a puncher, not as many early knockouts, as Dorticos, has more rounds behind him, he's been more consistent over the past couple of years as well, though Dorticos, not coming off a long layoff, he did have only 2 fights in as many years from 2016-17, Gassiev, slightly more active, with 3 fights in this time span.
Dorticos is 7 years the older man, for a cruiserweight, especially a cruiserweight with not many miles, 31 isn't old, not young, nlbut not old, 24, for a cruiserweight, again, with not many miles, is very young, probably pre prime, still with their best years yet to come.
They are a similar height, but Dorticos, as well as being the puncher, has 4 inches reach on Gassiev.

This has every reason to be a competitive fight, thoughout, there is so much to gain, there is also so much to lose, for both guys. I think they should want to win as much as each other, but the winner will come down to the more talented, the guys with the skills, the guy who can use his own tactics to nullify the other fighter, and in the end, I think that will be Gassiev, I could be wrong, Dorticos is a dangerous puncher, we don't know just how dangerous, he has plenty of skill as well, but I'm 60/40 on Gassiev coming away with a UD. I think Gassiev has fought the slightly stronger opposition, he has been slightly more consistent over the years, he has learned, adapted as a professional, better than Dorticos has, I think he is the better all round boxer, and he will beat Dorticos, go through to the final, take on Oleksandr Usyk.

Gold's picture

I think this is a pretty good fight, one that fans definitely won't want to blink. Both guys appear to have massive power and bring titles into the ring. At first I thought this would likely be a pretty close fight where I favored Gassiev slightly, but having looked into it more I believe this is a 70/30 fight for Gassiev.

For outside factors, the fight is in Russia, Gassiev’s home country. With this, Gassiev will have the home crowd advantage. This may affect the judges perception of who is landing the better punches if the fight goes the distance.

For Gassiev, he’s been working with Abel Sanchez for some time now and represents the pressure fighting and power punching we see in stablemate Gennady Golovkin. He seems like a pretty good overall boxer and a tough guy but he definitely does get hit. Gassiev is a good sized cruiserweight at 6’3 ½ with a 76 inch reach. He is young, only 24 years old, and apparently only had around thirty amateur fights. Therefore, he had to do a lot of learning on the job and took some lesser opponents the distance. In his last ten fights, he has knocked out eight, knocked down one, and had a no contest. I rate his power very highly. When he got his title opportunity versus Denis Lebedev, then WBA and IBF Cruiserweight champion, he was forced to go the distance and knocked down Lebedev who had only been knocked down once previously in his career. This was probably a good learning experience for Gassiev to go the distance with a seasoned albeit older champion. In his first bout in the World Boxing Super Series, he faced a faded former two-time Cruiserweight champion in Krzysztof Wlodarczyk who had never been knocked out and destroyed him with a brutal combination.

For Dorticos, he has only been in and around the world level for a short amount of time as a professional. However, he has an extensive Cuban amateur background with over 250 fights. Given he is a Cuban who defected, he is older, apparently 31 years old at 6’3 and a massive 80 inch reach. I don’t know a lot about Dorticos, and I’m not sure there isn’t a lot to know about him as a professional. However, it seems like he wants to push forward as well, be the aggressor, and force his opponents to make mistakes where he can counter and get a KO. He seems like a big puncher but I have a feeling he may not be as big of one as it seems right now. In his fight versus Kalenga, where he won the interim WBA title, he does seem to get hit a good amount and was down on two of the cards when he got a late stoppage. In his first WBSS fight versus Kudryashov he did get hit a decent amount too before blowing Kudryashov away. I don’t rate either of these guys though and I particularly don’t think Kudryashov was a world level fighter. Just today he was promoted from the fake WBA Cruiserweight paper champion to the legitimate champion so he comes into this fight defending a legitimate championship.

I think if Gassiev can work well in the early parts of the fight he can wear Dorticos down and outbox him down the stretch for a decision. For Dorticos to win I think he will have to catch Gassiev early on. The later the fight goes the less of a chance he has in my opinion. Dorticos has a good amateur background but I don’t rate anything he has done professionally as a sign he can beat Gassiev who has beaten legitimate opponents. Dorticos has never gone over 10 rounds and has only gone 10 rounds twice. I honestly think there is a decent chance Dorticos may get exposed in this fight as not being on the level of guys like Gassiev. I predict Gassiev to get a UD.

Whoever wins will face Oleksandr Usyk, my #9 pound for pound fighter in the world, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for the lineal, legitimate, and universally recognized Cruiserweight championship of the world. I think that will be a great fight and it’s a great event to crown an undisputed world champion. If Dorticos loses, I think he will have to work his way back up to a title shot. He doesn’t have the profile to get another immediate title shot. If Gassiev loses, I think he can get another title shot immediately or in the near future. He is from Eastern Europe like a lot of the relevant Cruiserweights and there seems to be a good amount of money in top level Russian boxing.
