More:

WBO cruiserweight champion, Krzysztof Glowacki, takes on former WBC champion, Mairis Briedis, in the semifinal of the second season of the World Boxing Super Series.

Glowacki fouls Briedis in round 2, hits him behind the head, but instead of letting the referee deal with it, Briedis gives Glowacki an elbow to the face, putting him down. At the end of the round, Briedis hurts Glowacki, drops him twice, but the referee doesn't hear the bell, and Briedis batters Glowacki after the bell. Briedis drops, batters Glowacki in round 3, stops him, advances to the final of the tournament.

After the fight, Briedis admits he heard the bell, but chose to give Glowacki an illegal beating, causing controversy. Briedis beats Glowacki, but not within the rules, ans it isn't considered to be a fair, clean win.

Prediction,

In my opinion, this should be Gevor vs Glowacki, I think Gevor got robbed against Briedis, Briedis was terrible.

I wonder if Briedis is still the favourite to win the tournament after that stinker against Gevor, it is hard to believe he went from giving Usyk all he could handle to not being old, only having one loss, being fairly fresh, and still getting out worked, out boxed by Gevor, seemingly by a wide margin.

Glowacki did well against Vlasov, won by a landslide, couldn't finish Vlasov, but Vlasov is tough, hasn't been stopped before, I think a prime Glowacki would have stopped him, but not early. I think Glowacki has a good couple of years left, is past his best, but not far past his best.

I think Briedis had an off night against Gevor, he can do a lot better than he did in that fight, he still only has the one official loss going into this fight, and winning 5 rounds against Usyk, losing an MD, might not be a win, but you have to be impressed by that, he won more rounds against Usyk than Glowacki did, that's for sure. Briedis has a better chin than Glowacki.

I think Glowacki hits a fair bit harder than Briedis, based on the quarterfinals, Glowacki might more hunger and desire at this stage, but although Glowacki knocked Huck out, Briedis beat him one sided, Glowacki was behind, and Usyk beat Glowacki a lot wider, I think he is better, Briedis, and bad nights do happen, it is a question of how much better Briedis can do than against Gevor, and how close he can come to matching what he did against Usyk.
It is a tough one to predict, but I think Briedis will win this, I think he is the better fighter, and I don't think at 33, having not taken too much damage, Briedis should be too far past his best, I think he had a terrible off night against Gevor, but Gevor fought the fight of his life, that was a factor, and Briedis will be a different fighter in this fight.

I think this will be a very close one, I think Briedis will edge it by SD.

Jack's picture

You very much underestimate Briedis, he had an injury in a fight with Gevor and he could not fully train and during the battle he was deprived of some possibilities. Briedis as a boxer is better than Glowacki, one can only compare that Briedis 120-108 defeated Huck, and Glowacki lost Huck on points. Briedis, moreover, gave Usyk 7-5, 6-6 a fight, and Glowacki 11-1, 9-3, I am sure in the battle with Glowacki he will be in better shape and I do not think that he should be deducted from accounts for one bad fight, all boxers have difficult and bad fights and there everything depends on the circumstances.

Champion97's picture

I understand, but the two arguments I would make are one, boxing is about timing, and two, Glowacki stopped Huck, didn't lose on points. I think Glowacki beats Briedis, we will see what happens, I wouldn't be surprised if Briedis won for tne reasons you said, but I just wonder if what we saw from him against Usyk was his best. We will see.

Welcome to Eye on the ring by the way!

Would you like to compete in the prediction competition?

Jack's picture

The chances in this fight are about equal, I would say 55/45 is a small favorite I see Briedis, I just mean that after the fight with Gevor Briedis was heavily written off, but this is not true, Briedis is still the favorite for the bookmakers and experts.
If Mairis approaches this fight with a good training camp and no injuries, then i are sure we will see a good and competitive fight.

Thanks Champion97.

Yes, I would love to participate.

Champion97's picture

He may be the favourite, so was Klitschko against Fury, so was Haye against Bellew, I called those upsets. It is an interesting fight, and I understand what you are arguing, Briedis is better than Glowacki, off nights happen, there was an injury, Briedis can do better than he did against Gevor like Saunders can do better than he did against Akavov and Parker can do better than he did against Cojanu, but Briedis looked so bad in that fight, I don't think it was just an off night, I think he is declining, injuries don't always just heal and not be a problem in the next fight, but I still acknowledge that sometimes the injruy is temporary, like Mayweather's injury against Castillo. Boxing is about timing, I think Briedis has declined a lot, doesn't want the win as much as Glowacki, but we'll see.

Awesome man, great timing, because the first fight is on the 13th, so you are not behind,

Here is the vault,

Uzcategui vs Plant
Jennings vs Rivas
Andrade vs Akavov
Linares vs Cano
Pacquiao vs Broner
Warren vs Oubaali
Jack vs Browne
Thurman vs Lopez
Marrero vs Nyambayar
Munguia vs Inoue

Predict the ouctome, KO/decision, and either SD/MD, (makes no difference) or UD, if a KO, predict early (1-4), mid (5-8), late (9-12)

Get the outcome right but the KO/decision wrong, 2 points
Call a UD win, 5 points
Call an SD win, 6 points
Call a draw, 7 points
Get the MD/UD wrong, but decision right, 4 points
Call a KO at the right time, 5 points
Pick a late KO and it is early, 3 points,
Pick a late Ko and it is mid, 4 points.

Any questions?

Jack's picture

Okay. Tomorrow or the day after tomorrow I will write predictions.

You changed your prediction? Why?

Champion97's picture

It's a tough one to call, I just think Briedis is better than Glowacki, and I can see more reason to think the Gevor fight was a bad off night, and to a lesser extent, Gevor fighting the fight of his life, but I think it being a bad night was why Briedis was so bad, and not because he is shot.

I hope so. There is also the thing that he split with his longtime trainer after the Usyk fight and that can have a long-term effect on his performances. I think Briedis at his best beats Glowacki by UD, but Briedis just looked so awful in that Gevor fight that I can't favour him right now.

Gold's picture

I wouldn't be surprised if this was for the vacant WBC title with Usyk almost certainly dropping his titles before this fight. Breidis is the #1 ranked Cruiserweight/"Diamond Champion" with the WBC and Glowacki was the #4 ranked before beating the #2 ranked Vlasov so it's a logical fight for them to sanction.

Gold's picture

For Glowacki's WBO title as well

MINIMaxBOXING's picture

I am very excited for this fight! I have Glowacki by MD. 115-113 115-113 and 114-114.
Breidis looked terrible in his last fight, while Glowacki looked really good against a very underrated fighter is Vlaslov. I don't see anyone getting the stoppage.

Champion97's picture

The WBC title is no longer at stake unfortunately, still a big fight though, still the Glowacki's WBO title and of course a spot in the final, can't wait for this one, 50/50 fight for sure.

Does anyone know why?

Champion97's picture

Don't know if Boxing Scene are unfairly blaming the WBSS, but this is how I found out.

https://www.boxingscene.com/wbc-withdraw-sanction-glowacki-briedis-blame...

Looks like sulaiman didn't get the money he wanted? These sanctioning bodies are as corrupt as can be. Only care about sanctioning fees...smh

Are you an active member on Boxing scene btw?

petieroach's picture

This fight was nuts

Champion97's picture

That was disgraceful from both fighters, and the time keeper, referee was badly organised, when the bell has gone, and they are still going at it, the referee has to physically restrain the one who is throwing more shots. Glowacki hitting Briedis in the back of the head was a lot worse than Briedis giving him the elbow, nasty, dirty, yes, but back of the head punches are very dangerous, so I would have taken a point from both fighters and read them the riot act after that.

I think Briedis will regret admitting he deliberately kept hitting after the bell, there should be a consequence for that, because that's dangerous, the elbow was understandable, but there is no justification for a bad foul like that.

Glowacki never recovered from the first knockdown, but I think he heard the bell, didn't expect Briedis to keep attacking like that, he got hit with concussive punches he wasn't prepared for, took a beating he shouldn't have taken, and the fight should have been over then, you can argue about who wins by TKO or DQ, or an NC, but Glowacki shouldn't have gone out for round 3, he was done, and that was a career ruining beating, Glowacki will be shot now.

MINIMaxBOXING's picture

SCREW BREIDIS! I HOPE DORTICTOS PUTS HIM ON HIS BACK!!!

Champion97's picture

So do I, no excuse for the after the bell beating, illegally ruined Glowacki's career and could have seriously hurt him, we're all rooting for Dorticos in the final now!

MINIMaxBOXING's picture

Agreed! Unfortunately, I don't think Dortictos is the level of Breodis :( I have Breidis in that fight by TKO 11.

Gold's picture

No titles were at stake in this fight. Apparently, the WBO withdrew their sanctioning before the bout, so Glowacki is likely still the WBO champion.

This was a 5 star fight thoroughly entertaining. A must watch. Absolutely crazy.
