When Miguel Angel Gonzalez pulls out of their bout for the vacant WBC Super Lightweight Championship, Kostya Tszyu instead faces last-minute substitute Diosbelys Hurtado in a wild firefight. Just a minute into the bout, Tszyu freezes Hurtado with a right hand against the ropes and follows up with a left hook that forces the Cuban to catch himself with a glove on the canvas. When Tszyu goes for the kill, he runs into a right hand that drops him onto a glove and a knee. Shortly thereafter, he eats another right that forces both of his gloves to the canvas for a second knockdown. With his right eye swelling, Tszyu keeps coming and blasts Hurtado with some bombs before the end of the round. After that, Tszyu slowly takes control of the bout and is breaking Hurtado down in the fifth when he finally drops him to a knee with a body shot. Another left hook to the body puts Hurtado on his rear and convinces Referee James Jen Kin to stop the fight.

Indio Cali a compelling fight here between two once beaten fighters. Hurtado gave Pete Whitaker all he could handle and was leading on the cards late in the fight when he was stopped for his only loss. Tszyu also had a good lead on the cards against Phillips when he was also caught late in the fight with a big right hand and ultimately stopped for the only loss of his career to this point.

Round 1: Tszyu has Hurtado virtually out within the first minute of the round, landing bombs Kostya scores a knockdown. Hurtado beats the count and gets on his bike with Tszyu in hot pursuit, Kostya rushes in throwing caution to the wind trying to finish it quick, and gets caught by two solid right hands that stun Tszyu down to a knee for a count. Tszyu gets up smiling and gets back on the attack, and is caught one more time with a right hand that causes Tszyu to pitch forward touching both gloves to the canvas for a second knockdown. Kostya beats the count again, and gets back to his gameplan which pays off almost immediately because he seriously hurts Hurtado one more time with a crushing right that sends Hurtado's eyes rolling back in his head just as the bell to end the round sounds. Crazy round which Hurtado wins on the strength of 2 KD's even though Tszyu landed the much harder blows and had Hurtado on the verge of being stopped on two separate occasions. 10-8 Hurtado.

Round 2 Tszyu being more cautious now, but is still the aggressor. Most of the round is Kostya trying to rush in without the use of his jab, and standing straight in front of Hurtado who takes advantage of Tszyu's lack of defense and head movement by pretty much landing his straight right hand at will. Tszyu gets in some decent mauling on the inside, but on the strength of Hurtado's hard counter right which he landed over and over Dio wins the round again. 10-9 Hurtado.

Round 3: Hurtado on the move again using his jab well, Kostya is able to corner Dio 30 seconds into the round and land a good hard combo that wobbles him. Hurtado moves and Tszyu finally remembers his own jab, and successfully starts sticking hard left jabs in Hurtado's face. There has been a significant mouse forming under Kostya's eye almost since the opening minute of the first round, that is really starting to become noticeably bad. Hurtado lands a couple good shots but then gets himself caught along the ropes, Tszyu patiently uses the hard jab not allowing Dio off the ropes blinding him with that jab he strafes him with a hard combo finishing with the body. Hurtado moving again, trying to keep Tszyu at bay with his own jab with minimal success. Tszyu steps in back to throwing bombs again, and Hurtado manages to step inside them and land a hard left hook (his best punch of the round) which doesn't detour Kostya at all, who keeps swinging away and landing at a decent clip. 10-9 Tszyu.

Round 4: Tszyu is mauling again, Hurtado trying to move away while using the jab, Kostya works in again behind his jab, and lands a hard right to the head and again to the body. Tszyu boxing well now, using the 1-2 to great effect, and has really started to invest in good hard body punching this round which Hurtado hasn't had a answer for. The last 30 seconds a fairly quite as Tszyu lands a good right, but other than that neither man does much else. 10-9 Tszyu.

Round 5: The body attack by Tszyu appears to have taken most of the steam out of not only Hurtado's punches but Hurtado himself. Now Kostya's jab is knocking Dio back against the ropes and he's inching closer and closer to landing that lethal right hand flush on Hurtado's skull. Hurtado does manage to fight back landing a hook and a good uppercut that makes Tszyu step off momentarily. Hard body attack by Tszyu, Hurtado lands another good hook in the exchange. Hurtado moves Tszyu steps in and catches Hurtado moving away with his hands down and lands a good right to the head. Tszyu bombing away now, and huge shots to the body and a couple good ones upstairs, gets him along the ropes throwing big shots upstairs. With Hurtado's guard up Kostya goes downstairs with a hard left hook to Hurtado's liver that causes him to take a knee with 42 seconds left in the round. He beats the count, the fight continues and with 30 seconds left Tszyu drops him again with another big body shot AND THAT'S IT! The ref calls a stop to the fight.
