Re: Kid Gavilan vs Johnny Saxton
Film quality made this one a tough contest to set through and pay attention without getting dizzy. It's astonishing the fight was awarded to Saxton as he had very little activity through the first 8 frames, so much so that I only saw one of the first 8 sessions in Saxton's favor. Gavilan did himself no favors by not taking command of the affair, while clearly winning the first half of the fight on workrate The Cuban Hawk never did anything convincing so while he was winning the sessions nothing stood out in his work to show he was the general. According to Ring Magazine editor at the time Nat Fleischer the referee showed favortism all night to the challenger, which was hard to notice on a film with no sound. But Gavilan should have known at the time how events were going and took action. Saxton did come on from the 10th on and won many of those frames and a lot of judges favor fighters who finish strong. So while Kid Gavilan should have left the ring still Welterweight Champion of the World, he was definitely outdueled by the new champion over the final 6 frames 4-2 by my eye.
