Prediction,

I think given that Carmona was his last opponent and that was far from a 50/50 fight, it would be ideal for Yafai to face a tougher opponent than this, but if his next fight is a unification fight, then this isn't a bad match for Yafai, not ridiculously easy, but a very low risk fight. I think Yafai will win every round, and I do not think it goes the distance, but I do think it will go late. Gonzalez is tough, I think he will soak up Yafai's power for 8 rounds, try to fight back, but get outboxed, and hit clean with big shots, but I don't think he can take Yafai's power for 12 rounds, doesn't have the defence to avoid punishment, needs Yafai to make a mistake to have a tiny amount of success, and if when he's tired, late on, he walks into shots, goes for broke, I think Yafai stops him, somewhere between round 9 and round 12, maybe round 10.

Champion97's picture

That was absolutely terrible from Yafai, it was a very close fight in my opinion, Yafai was strong in the late rounds, and he wasn't getting schooled in the early rounds, but Gonzalez, although having a good night, being better than he's ever been before, probably, is not world level, and you can't give Yafai much credit for just beating him, this should have been easy.

This is very similar to Ancajas vs Barrios in my opinion, Yafai wasn't as bad as Ancajas was in that fight, but like Ancajas in that fight, he was terrible.

I said before this fight that Yafai is the best fighter at 115, anyone who says he isn't good is an idiot, I have seen some people call him a trash champion, these fools are always about, but Yafai dominated Carmona, who gave Inoue a tough fight, this was an off night, but at the same time, is Yafai as good as he has looked in other fights? It is hard to say based on this performance, but he got the win, still, his feet were slow, he didn't judge distance well at all, his defence lacked, and there was a lack of variety, it was very poor. A lot of fighters have off nights, it doesn't mean they are limited or that they wouldn't beat better fighters than they struggled against, and promoters and the whole team know when it was just a bad night.

I still think Yafai is the best at 115, Rungvasai is getting old, Ancajas has looked poor twice in a row, I think Estrada and Ioka are good, but I think the Yafai we saw against Ishida, is the best at 115.

I believe I saw an idiot on the Internet say Yafai doesn't deserve the Roman Gonzalez fight, Yafai is a champion, Gonzalez is the challanger, when you are the champion, it isn't about making statements, it is just bad for your reputation and can say a lot about your weaknesses if you have an off night like this, but if you keep winning, are a world champion, grind hard in the gym, and try your best in the ring, you deserve any fight.

I don't agree that Yafai won the fight, in fact I think he lost, close, but I think Gonzalez should have got that.

Ioka would fuck Yafai up I promise you that. His style is all wrong for him

Champion97's picture

Nah I don't think so

Gold's picture

Zero chance Eddie lets Yafai fight Ioka even if Ioka wins versus Nietes (which I believe he will). High risk and low reward. Eddie knows Yafai is limited, which is why he won't match him versus good contenders or other champions and only wants to build Yafai's name off an old legend in Gonzalez. Even Arum is willing to take a chance with Ancajas vs. Rungvisai.

Gold's picture

The judge that scored it 117-111 Yafai, Guiseppe Quartarone, was the referee for Joshua vs. Parker and scored Helenius vs. Chisora and Sturm vs. Chudinov 115-113 to Helenius and Sturm respectively. Blatant corruption that someone like that can keep a job.

I had Yafai 115-113, but there were so many rounds where it was so hard to score as they were both missing so much. Almost every round was scored on body work and landed jabs, with most razor thin.

Yafai pressed the action, but ineffectively for most of the fight - Gonzalez counters keeping him honest the whole fight.

So I gave Yafai the edge overall, but far from comfortable with it, and no problems seeing it scored for Gonzalez by a point or two.
